It should be Pop Charts. But if you want to confine the thread to pop thats cool.
Perhaps Huey Lewis vs Hootie is not what we want to see anyway.

90s. 80s was full of pretentious twaddle. 90s had Nirvana and some decent Britpop and loads of great dance music.
80s possibly were better underground musically. Chartwise though its 90s for me.

Michael owned the 80's. Janet owned the 90's.

Since Janet appeals to my libido, I vote for the 90's.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 23 February 2003 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

But Michael, at least for a brief moment in his career, appealed to me musically, whereas Janet Jackson has been awful throughout.

Michael from The Jackson 5 throught to Thriller was immense. Janet Jackson ive never liked at all.

i think 80s pop is more defined, you think of new romanticism, synth pop, the likes of Tears For Fears and Talk Talk, hip hop, hip house, ska-based stuff i.e. Terry Hall and Madness as much as you do Madonna, Jacko, Prince, er Tiffany and those political bad boys Wham!

its harder to think of great examples of 90s pop in the same way for me because you tend to veer towards the 'boy bands' definition more and not include anything that features guitars...everything was a bit more marginalised and pidgeonholed i guess - but you've got St Etienne, Moloko, Pet Shop Boys and New Order still, the big 3 (Prince, Madonna, Jacko) still, KLF and The Shamen would count, They Might Be Giants, great one offs like White Town...

Chartwise i would go for the 90s because perhaps it was more VARIED (genres had developed to allow more experimentation, fusion etc.)

I want it all (and I want it now).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

The 80's a horrific nightmair, 90's all the way for me. Appart from the bloody ghastly Boy-bands which ruins my argument. Oh well..

Stephen Robinson, Sunday, 23 February 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

boys wore more makeup in the 80s, therefore the 80s was better.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 23 February 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

'80s, if only because the sonics are old enough that I find them kinda novel. Just listened to Flock Of Seagulls, Quarterflash, Laura Branigan, and Rod Stewart's "Foolish Behaviour" just recently. '90s pop wasn't quite as coherent.

Though this is a silly argument because all decades/eras were filled to the brim with crap. But at least on my stereo the '80s win.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 23 February 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, and the Cure's "Standing On A Beach" and "Catching Up With Depeche Mode."

80s was better, by ten million screaming miles.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 24 February 2003 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean, we're even debating "Hey Mickey" vs... I dunno, the Foo Fighters or whatever other shit the 90s had?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 24 February 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I kinda feel the need to speak up in defence of Janet Jackson. I've got a soft spot for "Control"-era Janet, back when she was still chubby. "My first name ain't baby..." C'mon that was great! I guess that means I vote for the 80's.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:32 (twenty-three years ago)

whathefuck is this choose between shit?

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep. Recently had to defend 80s music against someone who kept insisting that the 60s had the best music. The point I kept making was that the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s all had pretty much the same amount of great music...and the the same amount of one-hit wonders, pseudo-hip manufactured crap, pretentious drivel, lazy knock-offs and cheesy stuff that aged very poorly.
I don't think any decade is better objectively than any other. But I suspect people are hard-wired to prefer the stuff they grew up on.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 24 February 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone here knows choosing one over the other is wrong, but we give it a go anyway

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 February 2003 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

80s. because for soem reason pop music seemed a little bit darker and more mature (or pretentious depending on your viewpoint) and the manufactured boy/girl bands was more of a 90s thing really although it started in the late 80s I guess but look at stock aitken an waterman... 80s - divine, 90s - rick astley.

simon 803 (simon 803), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

whathefuck is this choose between shit?

i choose shit.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 24 February 2003 21:53 (twenty-three years ago)

three reasons why it's the 80s:

madonna - borderline
pet shop boys - west end girls
michael jackson - billie jean.
