We've All Made Mistakes

Of course, most of the people "here" have a passion for music. And most of the people "here" know quite a bit about the subject. I've been impressed with the knowledge, but we've all made mistakes.
I'm just curious. What's your biggest misconception or mistake or musical misunderstanding?

I've had a few. For one, I used to get Television and Magazine mixed up. That's all I'll admit to at this point.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Sunday, 23 February 2003 07:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The only gaffe I remember making in front of a lot of people was mixing up Simple Minds and Talking Heads, but I'd been drinking underage.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 23 February 2003 07:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I've printed more than one bit of pure falsehood because I was relying on AMG's information. For instance, I quickly learned tht "Float" is not Aesop Rock's second album.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 23 February 2003 07:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, the second mistake I'll admit to involves false Internet information. I was writing a review of the recent Interpol EP without the benefit of any biographical info. Hoping to find the names of the band members, I did a little googling. Found a site, but the info was wrong and I ended up getting the vocalist wrong.
Figured it out by the time I reviewed the full length, but the original review is now part of Interpol's bio package.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Sunday, 23 February 2003 07:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Just the other day I mistook the Double Leopards guy for my friend Brian, aka dead dead bird.

hstencil, Sunday, 23 February 2003 07:59 (twenty-three years ago)

circa 94 i couldn't work out jungle. the beats were too weird.
i'd arrived in the UK after 12 months on the road. before i'd left australia friends had been talking about breakbeat reggae. but when i heard it i couldn't "get" it.
i heard the weatherall mixes of one dove and focused on the hi hat patterns. i thought i'd cracked it. there was jungle.
what a fool.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 23 February 2003 08:53 (twenty-three years ago)

For about ten years I subconsciously thought Musical Youth and Sonic Youth were the same band.

Now I'm pretty sure they're not. Can someone confirm?

mei (mei), Sunday, 23 February 2003 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i once confused the Mack Daddy with the Daddy Mack, boy was my face red...

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 23 February 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I once corrected my older brother, who in the 70s told me how much he loved the Beach Boys' new hit song, "Rock and Roll Music."
"That's a Beatles song, you idiot," I smugly replied. Hey, I was 12.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Sunday, 23 February 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to get Television and Magazine mixed up

Remind me never to let you set my video.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 23 February 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Hehe. I used to confuse Television and Magazine as well. Until I like, actually heard them. I've also had a long-running inability to read news stories about the Rolling Stones and not for some reason think they're about the Stone Roses.

Ferg (Ferg), Sunday, 23 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I always get Built to Spill, Shudder to Think and Guided by Voices mixed up.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 February 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think that counts, Alex. I mean, who doesn't get those bands confused?

flightsatdusk (flightsatdusk), Sunday, 23 February 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, they're all dead dull to my ears (actually, I do like a couple of Shudder to Think tracks...notably "X French T-shirt" and their cover of "So Into You", but I couldn't possibly care less about Guided by Spillage or Built to Vocalize).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 23 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark Kozelek <-> Mark Lanegan

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 23 February 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

GvsB != Guided By Voices

Adam A. (Keiko), Sunday, 23 February 2003 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete Schilling <> Pete Shelley

Scott Warner, Sunday, 23 February 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Comets On Fire and Fireballs Of Freedom

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 23 February 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I reviewed the Ex's "Mudbird Shivers" under the impression that the Han B. who was their new second singer was Han Bennink. Er, no: Han Buhrs. Very VERY different. (This is sort of like mixing up Keith Moon and Keith Carradine.)

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 23 February 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the worst thing I ever said was when I was working at Musicland in Highschool. A couple in their late 20's asked about the Cocteau Twins. They wanted to know what the lead singers name was, I answered that Jean Cocteau was the lead singer. *doh* I was like 15.

Another real gaffe I made was on the 313 list when I said that Lo Soul(German minimal producer) was going to be doing a record on Involve. I had the Involved guys in from New Zealand and they played me some unreleased material, and one thing was a brilliant 12" ep from Loscil. The problem was that they had really thick New Zealand accents and we asked what it was, they said Loscil, which sounds exactly like Lo Soul. I know it wasn't just me, because everyone else in the room thought the same thing. Nobody ever really caught it, but I did when the 12" arrived at my door about 10 months later.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

bands i get confused are mowgwai modest mouse and mouse on mars

chaki (chaki), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I confuse all "mouse" bands as well.
Also, I used to confuse these 3 bands
interchangably:
Talking Heads, The Pretenders, and
10,000 Maniacs.
No idea why.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

levon helm and levi stubbs.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

For about a year, I was like, "Dude, what's with all the acclaim for this Dream Theatre band? I mean, did they really have any other songs besides 'Life in a Northern Town'?"

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

my biggest musical mistake was buying Agaetis Byrjun

... oh wait, that's not the sort of mistake y'all are talking about.

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Mixed up the Residents and the Replacements for years despite owning Residents (I mean Residents) albums. People would give me funny looks when I said how much I liked the Replacements and said how much I liked their Dadaist outlook.

Simon Huxtable (Simon Huxtable), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to confuse:
Matwos/Mirwais/Mogwai/Momus
Pixies/Posies/Pogues
Minutemen/Meatmen
Calexio/Califone
Laika/Languis
Lamb/Lambchop
Lush/Luna
Slint/Sloan
Arab on Radar/Arab Strap
Severed Heads/Swollen Members

T. Weiss (Timmy), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I reviewed the Ex's "Mudbird Shivers" under the impression that the Han B. who was their new second singer was Han Bennink.

lol! douglas, where did you get that info from? (or based on what assumptions did you conclude it was Han Bennink?) - i'm from the netherlands

willem (willem), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I once confused cartoonist Robert Crumb for modern classical composer George Crumb. I said something like "the various indecencies of George Crumb" or something, and then his record label sent me copies of several of his CDs!

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought that "influence" was a fairly interesting notion to think about while listening to music. Then I found out it is really an old Italian word for the flu, and that its use causes certain individuals to foam at the mouth.

EC, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to like 2 Unlimited. But I was like 12 years old then, so I guess I'm excused. Then again, maybe not. Some mistakes will haunt you forever.

Tuomas Alho (Tuomas), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to hate The Who, had heard mainly "My Generation" and thought most of their stuff would just be the same Animals/early Stones R&B-crap.

Found out later I had missed a lot of great music, particularly the marvellous "Who Sellout" album.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

One of my first posts here, I claimed to greatly admire the guitar playing of Elmore Leonard. My old friend Andrew L responded by saying he was a fan of Elmore James's crime novels. I nearly didn't come back...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

I just made a big fucking mistake by sipping the wrong glass. Cigarette glass XxX Gin and tonic glass. Cheers!
