Looks about right.

fletrejet, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Great album, hilarious cover. That pose on the right hand side makes me larf.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude! Ash Ra Tempel was doing proto-ambient stuff on the B-side of their first freakin' album. Still sounds better than a lot of the ambient slop being serived up today where the word "ambient" is often used to denote "lazy and boring."

Yeah, i'm cranky this afternoon...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Are there two different albums with this title? I thought a track I wanted was on this, but it's not there. I will have to go back to the Tritone (where I finally identified it on the jukebox) and figure out which album it was. I have an album by this title, but with a different cover. It doesn't have the track I wanted and I don't particularly like it.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

OOPS. There was actually a question in there somewhere, but I forgot to put it in.

My question: so is this record pretty much thee cornerstone of modern electronic ambient music? Obviously, I don't meant to imply this record invented the stuff. Eno, Schultze, and others were already well along that road, and were important too. But do you think the styles on this record in particular was especially foreshadowing of say, the Orb, or KLF's "Chill Out", etc. the stuff that Matt Maxwell hates?

In any case, I remember the neighbors across the street from me and Ned discovered "THE SEX MIX"... basically James Brown "The Funky Drummer" loop + this record's "Nightdust". To borrow a Daddinoism, SEX ON TOAST.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:55 (twenty-three years ago)

you've got E2-E4 right?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Rocket, I think there were different covers for the record. The one above is not the original. Here they are.

Spencer, no I don't.. but my friend at the local record store was telling me all about "E2-E4"!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, hilarious as it is, I can't stress enough how awesome the above album cover is. It's, at least, up there with Loverboy's "Get Lucky".

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

To borrow a Daddinoism, SEX ON TOAST.

And then we all lezzed up. Er, wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Uhm, i don't hate the Orb, or the KLF. Rilly. There's a lot of stuff that gets described to me as ambient soundscapes when really they're just plain boring.

But one human's 'boring' is another's 'totallyfuckingessential.'

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been a fan of the early stuff for years but am now listening to E2-E4 for the first time and it's amazing. I'm stunned by how good (and ahead of its time) this is.

and i didn't actually pay that.. i traded for it.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

In theory, I should be go ga-ga over E2-E4, and I recognize the ground it broke, but I find this the most trying Ash Ra Tempel album of them all. I guess i just wanted the right notes and timbre to loop forever and be glorious but, for some reason, E2-E4, either side, just doesn't do it for me. Take this with a grain of salt though. shrug.

donut hallivallerieburtonelli omg lol (donut), Wednesday, 19 October 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Dom, just move out here, we start band, I wasn't kidding. when you're done mixing the album, send me a copy.

"Blackouts" might be their best one, actually.

I'm certainly feeling it.

probably the #1 foulest album cover of all time.

offensive on EVERY level.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Saturday, 21 October 2006 05:56 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not going to post a picture of the original artwork of the Scorpions' Virgin Killer by way of disagreement.

I just wish there were more where Side 1 of New Age Of Earth came from, as far as Ashra is concerned.

LC (Damian), Saturday, 21 October 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

every level?

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Saturday, 21 October 2006 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

i must be totally stupid because
i thought the shiny stuff on the cover was just more airy spacey swirly stuff that's always floating around the people on hipgnosis covers...

gaseous (gaseous), Saturday, 21 October 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

anyway, nice tunes

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 09:55 (seventeen years ago)

Prefer Ashra to Ash Ra Tempel, to be honest

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 09:58 (seventeen years ago)

... always assuming you count "New Age of Earth" as an Ashra album

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

it says ashra on the cover, doesn't it?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:01 (seventeen years ago)

Not on the original (German) release (see top of thread)

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:03 (seventeen years ago)

is that the original sleeve? I thought this was the real one

http://wharfinger.extra.hu/wp-content/ashra.gif

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

No, that was the one Virgin used in the UK

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

I always figured that was the original. It looks more like an original, anyway.

razzle pyramid fatality (gnarly sceptre), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:29 (seventeen years ago)

There's another sleeve!

http://www.ashra.com/covers/1761ne1.jpg

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:31 (seventeen years ago)

... which might be the original. Album was definitely released first in Germany, Virgin picked up on it later for the UK and gave it a new sleeve.

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:34 (seventeen years ago)

yeah its weird the first one at the top of the thread looks like the phoniest.

That last one is pretty awesome - like some kind of 1982 space invader promo

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:36 (seventeen years ago)

My cd reissue has that last cover Tom D. put up here up front, with the first photo in this thread inside.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

Ah! I'd never seen that Space Invaders cover before!

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

So to get back on topic, is this album as good as Ashra gets? I've heard good things about 'Blackouts'

baaderonixx, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:48 (seventeen years ago)

"Blackouts" and "Correlations" are more rocky, I suppose, much more guitar

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:53 (seventeen years ago)

And let's not forget "Belle Alliance"

Ich Ber ein Binliner (Tom D.), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 10:54 (seventeen years ago)

Ice Train from Correlations is such a great jam. Is it disco? It's euphroic and I'd dance to it. Maybe it's a proto trance record, rather than proto ambient.

razzle pyramid fatality (gnarly sceptre), Tuesday, 25 November 2008 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

I'm way into "Schizo" off Starring Rossi. Such a great band... always changing from one album to the next. Really weird trajectory. I like a lot of what I've heard though.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 12:08 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah "Ice Train". I had to go back and listen to figure out which song that is. So good.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 25 November 2008 12:09 (seventeen years ago)

There's loads of cool stuff I've found by him, some of which is under the Ashra name...

Tracks I've enjoyed:

Deep Distance (there's a longer better version off the Private Tapes vol. 2)
Slightly Delayed
Shuttlecock
Oasis
Amboss
Midnight on Mars
Light and Darkness
