what is with this shit: faux childish genius or utter bullshit masquerading as art?

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 07:22 (twenty-three years ago)

er, dont think they're talking about that donna summer!

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think it's masquerading as art. It's just really good fun to listen to.

Simon H (Simon Huxtable), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

The Blechs are really good fun to listen to for about 3 minutes, then you forget you have a CD on altogether

dave q, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah it's punk innit

schnell schnell, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:16 (twenty-three years ago)

It's art masquerading as punk.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

no it's the complete upheaval and redefining of modern pop music = punk

schnell schnell, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

it's the complete u.a.r.o.m.p.m. listened to by about 15 people = art

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

heh

schnell schnell, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Matmos are masquerading as "childish?" I would've thought they'd be slagged around here for being "too cerebral!"

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't punk usually played by non-musicans? / most of the american bunch (tigerbeat) went to mills, I thought?

upheaval and redefining of modern pop music ????
what ? since when has any of the above been pop?

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

its 2001

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:44 (twenty-three years ago)

It's techno with some kind of bizarre exclusionary 'political' stance which is actually not much different from what you might expect if a bunch of GG Allin fans tried to start a band with a drum machine and a turntable and realized they didn't have the balls to go through with it five minutes into recording.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:50 (twenty-three years ago)

v/vm = childish. blechdoms = boring, matmos = shouldnt be in this list , donna summer = ????? tigerbeat = who cares knifehandchop = what, someone remembered who they were???
matmos = shouldnt be in this list. they are well good, as is the soft pink truth (at times).

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:54 (twenty-three years ago)

it's good.

although, i can admit getting a little glitched out at one point to tigerbeat6.

donna summer (the new) i like quite a bit.

matmos DOES belong to the above. even if less so aesthetically, i think there's something to be said for geography and playing shows with many of the tigerbeat6 crowd.

at the heart, matmos is about fucking it up just as much as any of those others... example: making a house-ish record out of surgery sounds.

yeah i just meant the the end result of the rest of tigerbeat 6's 'fucking it up' is a boring hacneyed mess, while matmos contrive to produce actually cool tunes. as if any of the other lot would be able to contribute to something as glorious as 'vespertine'

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
can anyone comment on the new donna summer (are there 2 of them?)? been eyeing it and would like to know a little more. like oiseaux-era hrvatski breakcore?

marcg (marcg), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The Soft Pink Truth is the only thing I've enjoyed in this entire list. (well, he covered Vanity 6, which is always a plus)

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 12 December 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ds gave me a CD-R of two of the tracks on this album the day of the black-out in New York -- very strong melodic stuff, and the insane breakcore moments actually kind of sneak up on you, which is quite an accomplishment.

I know about something else very surprising that he's working on, but I won't tell until the time is right.

Also, to answer the main question, Ds makes no secret of his past life as a visual artist and curator. See http://www.cinemaweb.com/jasonforrest/
