Ummmmmmmmmmm......yup I think it is. Kicking ass in full on guitar- mime mode. Hope she's been practicing the 'solo-gurning' face for those up-close-and-personal moments on tour.

"Riveting Reading" the reviewer says. Personally I'd say it's full of speculation and hearsay. Hear'Say? Sounds like a bandname.

Looks a bit like Jon Bon Jovi

Madchen, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

That's what I thought, Madchen! And also a bit like that guy from the Goo Goo Dolls.

Nicole, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Her arms frighten the hell out of me. She must be playing Don't Tell Me since that's apparently the only song she knows on guitar and plays it to "show off".

Ally, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yawn, Yawn and thrice Yawn.

alex in nyc, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And a 4th yawn. The guitar's prolly just there for cosmetic effect, like a handbag except less useful cuz it can't carry stuff.

AP, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

it'd be amusing if she just entirely ditched the notion of show and spectacle and decided to just ROCK, standing perfectly still in front of the mic, playing her axe.

fred solinger, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The idea of Madonna doing a two-hour guitar solo has officially made this the best day of the week so far. Thanks, Fred!

Dan Perry, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Wow, I was going to say Gene Loves Jezebel, but Jon Bon Jovi works, too.

And a 4th yawn. The guitar's prolly just there for cosmetic effect, like a handbag except less useful cuz it can't carry stuff.

But a guitar's more effective for bashing people's heads than a handbag. Otherwise Sid Vicious would've "played" handbag too.

Kris, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Did anybody see her "play" guitar on some American late-nite show recently? PATHETIC. She came out with her (male) guitar teacher, who actually played most of the song and she just kind of awkwardly fumbled around hoping, I can only assume, that the camera stayed in CU on her face. It didn't. She sucked. Which suprised me because her whole "thing" is built not around god-given talent or even beauty but a kind of self-madeness that requires no helpful hands. "Couldn't she have practiced those chords beforehand?" I wondered. And then I remembered that no - her whole "thing" is about making her self/image right in front of us, in public, which makes her less an "artist" and more a performer. Which is what I want out of rock n roll.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 21 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"a kind of self-madeness that requires no helpful hands": ????

I always took her to be being sold as the CEO of her own company (product = herself): with access to all the "helpful hands" she can hire (= cool by me). I've never been bothered by the Milli-Vanilli type argt anyway (someone else's voice, maaan: good — then her voice must be rubbish, and I'm glad we don't have to hear it). but, yeah, why does she make a *thing* of her guitar teacher when she wouldn't do the same with, eg, her dance trainer?

Madonna said that nigth "dont laugh at me"...she's counscious of that she sucks on guitar,...btw, madonna played guitar with her band EMMY back in the 80's (1980).

The more I look at it, the more I'm convinced it's a 'shopped photo. The lighting/edges/shadows all look artificial. In fact, the only thing that looks untouched is her face (except for the brow, which was retouched to look bad too).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 30 July 2009 20:47 (fourteen years ago) link

it'd say something decadent about our technological development that anyone would bother using Photoshop to make Madonna's arms look any more, umm, interesting than they already do

It's just the harshness of the flash, surely? I've just spent two glorious minutes looking at recent images of Madonna on the web and her arms are pretty much approaching that in every picture.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 30 July 2009 21:58 (fourteen years ago) link

You all wait until you're 62 years old and see how your arms will look then.

"To demonstrate that the arms in the photo were in fact Ms. Ciccone's, a simple theory must be explicated..."

sorry, I thought it was a generally known thing that Madonna's arms, due to an insane diet and fitness regimen, look a bit unusual and frightening, which you wouldn't say to Madonna's face because they also look like she could tear you and several phone books in half with them

It's funny to me how that article makes six separate references to her in this time-honored format: the “Like a Prayer” singer; the “Like a Virgin” singer; the “Material Girl” singer; the “A League of Their Own” star; the “La Isla Bonita” singer; the “Vogue” singer.

(No judgments, but she is unrecognizable now.)

| (Latham Green), Tuesday, 7 February 2023 18:44 (one year ago) link

kinda self-hate for the times i've ever poked fun at anyone trying to improve their appearance via whatever methods they choose, and due to that i feel hypocritical trying to preach but i don't think anyone deserves to get dragged for their decisions about their own looks, it just shouldn't even be a thing at this point. a couple friends of mine have moms who were vv much in the public eye and they're aging for the most part normally, and they get dragged for that too. it's a no-win, in the shifting goalposts set up by many members of the watchful public.

omar little, Tuesday, 7 February 2023 18:46 (one year ago) link

she's also in an industry where people share public photos of them daily and praise or mock how she looks, and also one that rewards people that 'age well', so there could be a litany of reasons she chose to do it.

i don't gaf why, let her live, and will be seeing her in September.

Latham I know you say no judgment but you did follow that up with a few posts of mockery, and sharing gossip column article is likely to generate such circular "look at her" firing squads. i just don't want us to turn into Star magazine like portions of old-ILX could tend to be

if you say "no judgment" yet your post is extremely judgmental, that says a lot about how little accountability you're used to taking for your statements

ꙮ (map), Tuesday, 7 February 2023 18:57 (one year ago) link

You're right, it was judgmental. But know this, it was not meant to be harmful. Be that as it may, I take it back if it has caused harm. I do have a poison pen at times, and this is not helpful to anyone, nor productive.

| (Latham Green), Tuesday, 7 February 2023 19:03 (one year ago) link

It's possible to comment on someone's changing appearance without mocking them for it. I find her face (and the additional stuff she does, like the gold teeth and the eyebrow bleaching and stark, extreme makeup and whatnot) fascinating, not in an "Oh my god, look at her face! What a tragedy!" way but in more of a "Huh, that's an interesting look" way. I'm actually more interested in it because I don't think it's about allegiance to conventional beauty standards or fear of aging or whatever. It's sort of like what John Waters said about Divine: that he didn't want to be pretty, he wanted to be a monster. If Madonna wants to be a monster (and I don't mean that in a pejorative sense at all, I mean it in a folkloric/mythological sense), that's cool. And I view it as I would any other cosmetic decision — she did it because she knew people would be looking at her and she wanted them to see her in a certain way, the same as if she'd gotten a big, obvious tattoo. So look at it! Have thoughts about it! But you can't condemn without knowing the reasons why. And unfortunately there are no interviewers capable of having a real, serious, interesting discussion about it with her without coming off like finger-pointing assholes.

yeah something I've noticed about that sort of extensive surgery is there are always some angles where they look fine but when you look from a different angle or change the lighting suddenly everything looks off. that's a thing with Elon Musk too

who knows why she does any of the things she does, I think people forget that Madonna was sort of on the same level as Michael Jackson, there ain't no human being on the planet like 'em. agree though that it would be cool if an interviewer could take her seriously and try to find out
