Danny Elfmann is mine, what do you think?

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Damnit, I was gonna say Danny Elfman!

He's very very good. Some of his themes are ingrained in my psyche as though they had been burned into it with a brand (such as The Simpsons theme, the Pee Wee's Big Adventure theme, a whole slew of songs from Nightmare Before Christmas...)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Jack Nietszche.

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Morricone first, Roy Budd second, John Barry third

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Elfman does all of those awesome Tim Burton movies, Tim Burton's like my artistic idol, and Danny complements his ideas well

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah john barry or maybe even sakamoto...did takemitsu do any film scores?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Ry Cooder's done some good stuff.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:11 (twenty-three years ago)

did takemitsu do any film scores?

Yeah, I think so, but I don't remember any off-hand.

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Bernard Herrmann, natch.

I also like Carter Burwell, who's done all the Coen Bros. films. (His score for Mamet's "The Spanish Prisoner" is one of a very small number of scores I could hum off the top of my head.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Ennio is the King.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh -- I'd also say Philip Glass, on the strength of Koyaanisqatsi alone, except that a) Koyaanisqatsi is sort of a special case, and b) I hate that most of his mainstream film scores (The Truman Show, The Hours) are mostly sloppily arranged versions of pieces he wrote years ago.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Bernard Hermann, good call

Mancini is pretty damn good as well

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The only Glass movie score I like is the one for Mishima.

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Ennio Morricone is a sick, sick genius.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Nyman. David Holmes. Glass. Morricone. Badalamenti. Brook. Clint Mansell. Some Revell. John Lurie. Brian Eno.

Tim D (Tim D), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and Lisa Gerrard as well.

Tim D (Tim D), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh shit, I forgot Angelo Badalamenti! What a great imagination that guy has!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, ditto on Badalamenti. I especially like that he uses synthesizers quite a bit within an otherwise orchestral context. And to such good effect.

hstencil, I'm actually listening to the Mishima score right now -- at least the Kronos Quartet version -- if you can believe it. Then again, that's what prompted me to bring up Glass in the first place.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yoko Kanno, though I don't actually know what series/movies she wrote songs for.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Randy Newman

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Stu Phillips,Paul Giovanni,Burt Bacharach,John Cameron

Paul R (paul R), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Jerry Goldsmith for Alien and Patton alone.

And the only good Danny Elfman score is the one for Dead Presidents.

Wintermute (Wintermute), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Nino Rota!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Cliché Answer: John Williams.
But I do second the votes for Jerry Goldsmith and Ennio Morricone (I haven't seen the Good the Bad and the Ugly in a decade an a half, and the theme music is still on an unending loop in my brain as we speak.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Joseph Kosma

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Takemitsu's film scores are great, but unfortunately I can't remember a single film (I had a comp disc with themes/pieces from different movies). I'm almost certain he did some Kurosawa, but I'm not sure which ones.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll say Danny Elfman as well.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Wintermute (Wintermute), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll tell you one thing, it's not Hans Zimmer. Randy Newman rox0rz but has he done anything besides Toy Story (and Toy Story 2)? What was the movie David Byrne did?

Famous Athlete, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

What was the movie David Byrne did?

What, do you mean True Stories? The movie-with-the-song-from-which-Radiohead-got-their-name?

("Radioheeeeeaaaaddd/I'm picking up something good...")

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"Randy Newman rox0rz but has he done anything besides Toy Story (and Toy Story 2)?"
Are you serious? He has a zillion credits, either as composer of the original score or some of the songs. "The Natural," "Ragtime," "Monsters, Inc.," "Parenthood," "Blaze Star," "Awakenings," "A Bugs Life," "Maverick," "Meet the Parents," "Pleasantville," "Avalon," "The Paper," to name a few.
And don't forget "Gone Dead Train" from "Performance."
And I can't tell you how many times "Louisiana 1927" has been used in a film or documentary.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the episode of the much under-appreciated Family Guy where they found Randy Newman in a place where he "just sat around singing about stuff; whatever was around". That was classic.
