Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:21 (twenty-three years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

White Trash people are not dangerous because they are intelligent, they are dangerous because they are unpredictable.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:17 (twenty-three years ago)

White trash people, by and large, are not dangerous at all to anyone but each other.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

OK this is not going where I wanted it to go. What I was implying is that this "mullet" record seems to be aimed primarily for people who would make fun of people with mullets, and who would possibly be reluctant to buy this assortment of tunes without the sort of ironic distancing suggested by the title and cover. This seems like a bad thing to me.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah! I see.

Then the answer is no, at least for me. Ironic distancing is a tricky thing to pull off, and this is way too heavy-handed. There's almost nothing ironic about it -- it's just plain mean-spirited. And I see people with real life, honest-to-God mullets all the time, which makes "ironic distancing" even more difficult.

But what's on the compilation? If it's funny enough, that might push me over the edge.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:53 (twenty-three years ago)

It's mostly '70s and '80s AOR, mixed in quality. Click on the cover and it'll take you to a track listing.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 06:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Jesus. Definitely not. Some of those songs are actually pretty good. The "mullet" angle is a terrible gimmick to sell those songs.

Now I clearly see your original point.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 07:04 (twenty-three years ago)

There's the small chance of ironic distance as ruse: as in, you really want your dose of, what, Foghat or Foreigner or whatever, all on one disc... but should company come over and peruse your record collection, you need the cover story of, "Oh, this is hilarious! Mullets! Har har har."

Again, not people's best instincts, but maybe marginally better than pure white trash kitsch or whatever.

wl (wl), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

awful shit....reminds me of those K-Tel compilations that tried so hard but failed. In 20 years someone will find this in a used bin and have a laugh.(by the way every song featured on this is on heavy rotation on the shit commercial rock radio station here in Saskatoon...no immagination i tell ya....good thing we have community radio!)

chad (chad), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 08:20 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I don't think a mullet would buy this record...do guys w/mullets know they're called mullets? I honestly don't know, and I've never had the inclination to just ask a mullet-wearer, "Hey, what do you call that hairstyle? It's cool..."

Just another collection of classic FM stoner songs...one ticket to paradise...

Jess Hill (jesshill), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

With the current rate of Ironic Distancing being what it is, I think that Ironic Mullets are now what Sincere Mullets used to be.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

So I guess dudes with mullets like monster trucks, harleys, football and beer (as implied by the cover)?

I remember that K-Tel did an indie rock compilation tape in the 1990s.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Journey?!?!?!? Loverboy?!?!? Kansas?!?!

I really don't think their fans will understand the irony, personally..... in fact, their fans are probably all bald by now....

russ t, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's not be all snooty/criticky about "white trash." I grew up largely in a smallish farmish town in a largely rural western-US state, and a lot of my friends are getting slandered, here. Although small-mindedness makes me crazy, it's not exclusive to people who live a certain way or in a certain area or with a certain haircut. Some of it thrives here, apparently.

Neudonym, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, let's not use the phrase "white trash" at all.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

This makes my head hurt in a couple of ways.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Mulltallica Rulez (Chris V), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Its not the mullet, but the mustache that makes that photo classic.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Some of my best friends are white trash.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Mainly because it seems that not only is liking the biggest hits of Jimi Hendrix and Deep Purple being equated with liking Quiet Riot and Loverboy but all have become equally the province of a kitsch that is associated with a specific 'lifestyle' and haircut.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

C'mon, "The Stroke" and "Carry on Wayward Son" finally in one place! Classic.

dave q, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Just said it makes my head hurt not that it was bad. Though it seems a bit hit-and-miss anyway.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

In defense of my own use of the term, I've heard lots of people proudly(?) lay claim to being "white trash." It seems that it's more-or-less harmless slang for a class thing.

Although for all I know it could be one of those words you can only use if you're part of the group. I grew up suburban and not necessarily totally white.

wl (wl), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Most of the songs make the cut. But I don't consider "The Doobie Brothers", "Toto or "The Hollies" very ummm mullet rock...
Who is "Ram Jam" ?

And No Styx!! No ZZ TOP!!! Come on.....

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 27 February 2003 00:52 (twenty-three years ago)

From my second book, just because: "Ram Jam's 1977 one-shot 'Black Betty' was bubblegum, disco, and everything else. A cover of an age-old Leadbelly blues, produced by Kasanetz/Katz with huge kick drums and stomping glam-metal chords played in a way that approximates classical progressions, it passed for punk in *Time* magazine (where a '70s feature on said subculture included a picture of a girl in a torn 'Black Betty Blam-De-Lam' T-shirt) even though the band included Billy Joel's bassist and the guitarist used to do '60s pop with the Lemon Pipers. In 1989, Epic Records put out a house music remix. In 1994, it became a hit in France."

As for *Mullets Rock!: Stupid name, stupid cover, 95-or-so percent GREAT music. Though doesn't everybody in their right mind already OWN all those songs?? Jeez...

chuck, Friday, 28 February 2003 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

it's overpriced, but a pretty great rock comp. not sure if it surpasses 'freedom rock', but I can't really remember what all was on freedom rock.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, "Black Betty" rules.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 28 February 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

what would Geir Hongro say about all this, i wonder?

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I like most of these songs!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Tad - he'd affect some pose but him siding with the jam or japan over 'carry on my wayward son' shows the glaring inconsistency in his supposed adherence (fairweather at best) to melody.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

what is norwegian for "mullet," anyway?

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:54 (twenty-three years ago)

mullut

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything you've always wanted to know about mullets

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh americans, you have so much to look forward to when the ironic-mullet-as-mainstream-fashion-statement hits your shores...

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

oasis already toured here

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:30 (twenty-three years ago)

it is so highly unoriginal to make fun of mullets

rebekah (rebekah), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:02 (twenty-three years ago)

what is norwegian for "mullet," anyway?
"Hockeysveis" (as in "ice hockey hair"). Makes sense, doesn't it? :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Somehow I knew that Mississippi Queen would be on it... Black Betty is the jewel among the cockroaches ... But most of the songs are crap.. but maybe good to hear every couple years... (if you're into ironic listening.)

AOR hits are so non-AO.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 August 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

this is ironic. but when irony like this in itself becomes ironic; like say someone with a mullet actually purchases this: irony is killed. i don't think that is what they are going for.

mallory bourgeois (painter man), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

also wait till the ironic mullet hits the shores of north america, cough cough electroclash anyone?

mallory bourgeois (painter man), Friday, 8 August 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Bad to the Bone" is the most shit song ever recorded

dave q, Friday, 8 August 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

you havent heard his contraction of JLH's One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer and House Rent Boogie.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Friday, 8 August 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It's one of those once-people-have-been-making-fun-of-it-long-enough-for-the-ad-guys-to-catch-on-when-they-start-marketing-it-people-will-just-think-that-they're-stupid-for-trying-to-market-it things. Yeah, people are trying to cash in on mullet bashing now, when we've all been mullet bashing since 1994. I guess now I can't make mullet jokes because it's too corporate. Nevermind, I'll just grow one myself and then pee my pants. That makes no sense. Sorry.

RAM JAM, JOURNEY, FOREIGNER WERE ALL GREAT MULLET GROUPS THAT TIME MAY FORGET ABOUT, BUT MOST OF ALL THE WORLD WAS IN A MUCH STABLE PLACE. WE WENT FROM MULLETS TO HAVING HAIR SHAVED OFF, FROM CAMAROS TO IMPORTS WITH BIG MUFFLERS, LET THE ROCK LIVE ON. I HAVE A FIREBREATHING GIBSON SUPER 400 THAT MY PARENTS BOUGHT ME WHEN I WAS A CHILD WITH BIG BAD HUMBUCKERS, WHEN I PLUG THAT BEAST IN IT GROWLS LIKE A LION, AND I ENJOY JAMMING ALONG WITH THIS CD. THIS MUSIC WILL NEVER DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

White trash clearly have no sense of irony. The market in that is cornered by music bloggers.
