Has anyone checked out the new Audiogalaxy thing yet?

http://www.audiogalaxy.com

It's a pay service, and I don't know how much it's going to cost. It doesn't seem to want me to know that until I'm hooked. Shrewd.

The radio stations they have are pretty damn good. I'm very impressed with their "best of 2002" station, based on staff picks. They have a huge catalog, as always, and the "satellite" (he nostalgically called it) allows CD burns and... it looks GOOD! People have been saying for a while now that someone needs to come up with a pay service that people will actually want to use. Could this be it?

They're actually distributing the Rhapsody service, from Listen.com (www.listen.com). You can also get Rhapsody directly from Listen.com, and get the free trial subscription.

This is one of the big three subscription services, and so far the best - I believe it has the most content (279,000 tracks) and it definitely has the best user interface. The bummer is that it only streams, so you can't rip it, put it on a portable device or hear it in the car. I'm one of a relatively small number of subscribers, but I dig it - I use it at work, it has a lot of albums I've been meaning to check out (listening to Herbie Hancock's Sextant right now) from jazz to indie rock to Bowie to Pink Floyd to, gah, Norah Jones.

It can't compete with file-sharing yet but in my case, the convenience it offers and the use I get from it is worth the $10/month.

BTW: Obviously this has nothing to do with Audiogalaxy as we knew it. Though I prefer soulseek now anyway.

All morning I've been listening to their web stations, getting ideas, and downloading from Soulseek. Looting!

Does it work in Linux?

Doubtful. Most all these types of things are PC only.

They're actually distributing the Rhapsody service, from Listen.com (www.listen.com).

This changes everything. I was thinking about how Audiogalaxy has been so good to me, and how even if the subscription service wasn't perfect, they deserved some of my money. They have my loyalty. But listen.com? Fuck listen.com.

Internet music marketers -- I hope you're listening.
