What is the quality like on this medium? It says its a littel noisier
King Records Lathe Cut Polycarbonate. its clear and you can do runs as low as 20 for a reasonable price.

Vanity pressing anyone....?
I assume this is a different thing to Acetate Cutting? whic you get how many plays from before it sounds like crap?

uh...classic? sound quality varies with the style and volume of the music, but generally it's less bassy and has a thin, high-end quality that sounds sort of brittle. in my experience some turntable/needle combinations work better with them than others.

i think the principle is similar to acetates but polycarbonate is more durable by far - it's the same stuff they make CDs out of.

a little noisier? way noisier, a lot more crackle, and no bass.

polycarbonate lifespan is apparently somewhere between a flexi and a proper vinyl record. but as noted above - see what your stylus does to a CD scratchwise and that's what's happening to the 'record' every time you play it.

as limited vanity releases go, polycarbs are cool but don't release anything that you'd particularly want heard on them..

and i think flexis sound better too

What is a "Flexi" and where can you get them done?

-
Are they the thin plastic, usually square, numbers that used to come on the cover of rock mags before they had CDs? Can you still get these made and where? they are cool.

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Thursday, 27 February 2003 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes that's right.

You can't get flexis made in the UK anymore but somewhere in the US is still doing them - I don't recall the name. Apparently it's more expensive than getting a hard vinyl record done.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 27 February 2003 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

no way.

shit that sux big time.. I was soo keen to get some done.
Maybe i'll try out these Polycarbonates instead. run of 20 would be reasonable

We did a run with Peter King (King Records in New Zealand) and i have to say the quality SUCKED!

Each one sounded different, some had no bass but loads or treble, some had loads of treble and no bass....

I have some other stuff that was pressed at King, and that sounded a bit better (but that was more experimental stuff - so the poor sound was less noticable)

So, if you wanna press some dancy type wide frequency stuff I'd say avoid. If you're doing more experimental stuff you could probably get away with it.

Having said that Peter King was really easy to work with..

jack battery-pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I might just do a couple. He will do runs of 20 which shouldn't cost much and well could be rather amusing..

p. king doesn't "press" records, he runs each one off individually on a lathe thing like they use to make a master disc! unfortunately yeah they often sound like crap.

duane, Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i have a couple that sound adequate but quite a few that sound worse than RealAudio.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah sounds rather hit and miss.
- I'd still like to give it a shot. there isn't really an alternative / except for doing a small run of 7"s

thanks for the responses.

one year passes...
Dear Sir,

I want to learn about the life span of polycarbonate and especially turnover of 19 lit. polycarbonate water bottle. How many times can we reuse the 19 liter polycarbonate water bottle? Do you know any research or statement about it?

Sincerely,

Dr. Ismail Peker

good luck with that, dr., ahem, peker.

anyway, as far as flexis go, the last place (on the planet?) to manufacture them, evatone out of florida, shut down maybe 2 years ago. probably plenty of links out there to the story. made all the papers.
