Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 February 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I wrote the Smiths - Asleep on a few books as well as Cure's Picutres of You. I was a depressing boy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 27 February 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I was still scratching 'The Stone Roses' into chair arms at university. Normally when pissed.

alexfack (alexfack), Thursday, 27 February 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I saved all my notebook covers after I used the paper inside; have them around somewhere. They're fun to rediscover every couple of years. LOTS of Cure, certainly. Dead Kennedys, Metallica in the early years. Quotes from Camus in French, which I didn't even speak...I really needed to be put out of my misery.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 27 February 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

tony bleach (blackshoeswhitesocks), Thursday, 27 February 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Through middle school and Gr 9, I remember writing out "Stairway to Heaven" a lot. I'm not totally sure why, in retrospect. I think it was probably because it was long and helped kill time. I was bored a lot. Maybe also like some sort of badge of fandom. Also, the Doors' "When the Music's Over". Maybe some Soundgarden. I liked "Drawing Flies" and "Slaves and Bulldozers" a lot. In Gr 11 and maybe 12, I mostly remember a lot of Nirvana lyrics, pretty much entirely from In Utero, "Dumb" in particular. "The Waitress" by Tori Amos. Bits of Sonic Youth songs - the line "society is a hole", twee junk like "morning becomes a kite tangled up in stars", my .sig file in Gr 13 was briefly a bit of "Mote" (IIRC "When the seasons start to spiral out of turn and words don't speak just fall across the carpet you're just in time to watch the fires burn"). There might have been some REM in there, "It's the End of the World" possibly.

Famous Athlete, Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

The day I bought-&-listened to for-the-first-time Primus' Sailing the Seas of Cheese and Praxis' Mutatis Mutandis, I scrawled both band names onto my backpack with a sharpee in the shape of a yin-yang. It was quite a landmark in the development of my musical taste. I must've listened to both those albums at least a thousand times over the next 3 years of high school.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

dan (dan), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

In college I was in Mad Forest (Caryl Churchill play abt Romania under Ceaucescu in late 80s) and I penned

I...I remember standing by a Wall
And the guns shot above our heads
and we kissed as though nothing could fall.

on the cover cos it was all cold war melancholy and shit.

g.cannon (gcannon), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

...the cover of my script...

g.cannon (gcannon), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i drew pictures of Prince, always in exactly the same way, with circular sunglasses and a bit of wavy hair coming down over his face.

me and a friend kept planning "magazines"; we'd spend days designing each millimeter of the cover and suddenly become confused when confronted with what to actually put INSIDE

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oooh, I also wrote "Rael Imperial Aerosol Kid" about a billion times on everything I could get my hands on over the course of one very-much-affected-by-Lamb Lies Down on Broadway week mid-sophomore year.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

my desire to posess her is a WOUND and it's nagging on me like a SHREW but i know that to possess her is therefore not to desire her and then that little girl will have to go yeah then that little girl will have to go

(having this scribbled on a folder nearly got me fired from my first temp job out of college)

dan (dan), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i remember drawing the public enemy 'target' logo on everything. lyrics would've been early house stuff: "can you feel it?", "i'll house you", "bango, to the batmobile - let's go!", etc, etc.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Bad Religion. Frequently, "Faith Alone" ; "Anesthesia" ; "American Jesus" ; "I Want To Conquer The World"
Black Flag "Jealous Again"
Dead Kennedys "Straight A's"
Shellac "Prayer To God" (won me a trip to the guidance office and school psychologist)
Germs "Lexicon Devil"

Ian Johnson, Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to write this everywhere because I liked where the phrases broke:

there'll be no more taking only
giving and the sun pouring down no economics
and no atomics
just the spread of mother natures gown
do you hear me mother nature?

that and:

"I was ready to crashland like an airplane on the landscape of an unpleasant dream ... and little bobby dylan who was all set & willing to sell me his new leather jacket - was greatly surprised when I told him 'no dice' - I just ain't buyin' it man."

(A beer to anyone who can identify either one.... (you have to come & get it...))

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 27 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

The first one is from Traffic's "When The Eagle Flies", dude. How old are you?

dan (dan), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 February 2003 01:41 (twenty-three years ago)

My freshman year notebook proudly displayed the Soul Coughing epigram "Come on and dig me, cos I'm the fly pygmy"

Adam A. (Keiko), Friday, 28 February 2003 01:51 (twenty-three years ago)

"but i'm lost, and i'm losing
the thread that holds me down
and i'm up, hot and rising
in the lights of every town"

...must've been my first year in the university, probbly. could've been on the 'political economy' notebook ...if not 'foreign literature', ha!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 28 February 2003 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant Jim Morrison

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"When I think back on all the crap I learned in school, it's a wonder I can think at all."

Evan (Evan), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"I am the antichrist, I am an anarchist"
"I'm so bored with the USA"
"beat on the brat with a baseball bat"
"love comes in spurts"
"I wander loaded as a crowd/a nowherewolf of pain"

Haha, punk rock.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 28 February 2003 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I had an early Orwell fixation so I wrote "Victory " on everything. "Victory Textbook", "Victory Notebook", "Victory Syllabus", etc. The only real song lyric I wrote on stuff was this:

"ONE STEP BEYOND!"

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 28 February 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to draw logos rather than write lyrics on my exercise books - Madness, The Beat, The Jam etc.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 28 February 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i made a collage out of cut-out figures from the aristocats illustrating BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 28 February 2003 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Late 70's - early 80's, high school:

"Wind Your Clocks And Read Your Gauges" - Shadow Boxer - Angel City
"Killer Behind You" - Killers - Iron Maiden
"You Know I'm Going To Lose And Gambling's For Fools, But That's The Way I Like It Baby!...And Don't Forget The Joker" - Ace Of Spades - Motorhead

Those were some that stand out, along with AC/DC, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Ramones songs.

Davlo (Davlo), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The lyrics to a song I wrote at about age 8 called "Red Hot & Rollin'".

I was into hair-metal (this was around 1984). "Red Hot & Rollin'" was something I saw on a car window sticker.

Mean Guy, Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I PAINSTAKINGLY inked the cover of Killers by Iron Maiden on one side of a binder...then was so proud of my dubious handiwork, that I didn't want to actually use the binder for fear of damaging my rendering.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Descendants, Sex Pistols, Black Flag...and oddly enough P-Funk.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 1 March 2003 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

shoplifter of the world unite on my binder at school

rocket powered and nailed to the ground on my bedroom door (beck) - my dad called me last year and told me he just painted it and it took three coats.

roger adultery, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

symbols from Thomas Pynchon novels.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)

the (45-second-plus?) band introduction that leads off the Grateful Dead's One From the Vault.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i liked the quotes from the Stop Making Sense LP-insert. esp. "Body Odor is the Window to the Soul" *...*

willem (willem), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Leonard Cohen's "Closing Time" and Men Without Hats' "You And Me," each in their entirety, were the only lyrics I ever scrawled on textbook covers. Mostly I drew big angry anarchy symbols.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:40 (twenty-three years ago)

"I know that you're in love with him
Cuz I saw you dancing in the gym"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)
