Closest thing to Bright Flight by Berman??

Can someone recommend somthing that sounds as dark and rich textured as Bright Flight and has that similar pathological country vibe? I love pedal steel and piano on guitar records and especially on Bright Flight where everything seems to have what I can only think to describe as an 'inky' quality. If instruments were colours on that, I imagine vivid dark blues and dark browns and lots of deep greens, every colour in focus. I like countryish records with nice male/male male/female vocal harmonies. There's something with Berman that's sort of a desparate shattered vulnerable sound but that's overlayed with something sweeter. Imagine a messed up hobo croaking about pain and broken things but backed by an angelic emmy lou harris vocal, redeeming him. That would be my ideal I guess. I wish I lived in the power and the light. There's a gospel edge or something. Lordy Lord and the pedal steel wailing. Any suggestions? How are Lambchop, for example, cause I feel maybe I should be plugging into 'new country' if this is what I'm after. I've heard Will Oldham, and that's there or therabouts. But what else? What comes closest to Bright Flight?

I don't think it's nearly quite the same, and there's no female vox, but Souled American are prolly my favorite band in this genre. Totally underappreciated.

I like the sound of them from a quick browse. What's their best one or two discs?

Unfortunately, most of the "new country" bands are nowhere near as haunting and poetic as DC Berman's best works. If you enjoy Bright Flight, you should check out The Natural Bridge, an earlier Silver Jews release.

My fave Souled American disc is Flubber. There's a relatively 4CD box set out there, too, entitled Framed.

thanks all. i'll follow up on all of that. gram parsons & the carter family are ones i've been meaning to get round to. i have 'the natural bridge' btw, but it doesn't reach the same heights as bright flight in my opinion.
