Is there any one genre that contains no good artists?

I really don't think so.

Prove me wrong, however.

David Allen, Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

nu-metal/mallcore. There, that wasn't too difficult.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

new age

oops (Oops), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

How are you defining nu-metal? If you're including System of a Down and/or Linkin PArk, you've got two good artists right there.

Also, new age has Vangelis.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but Vangelis is pure horseshi...ya got me

oops (Oops), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

tool can be considered nĂ¼-metal. i'll stand by them, and i'm sure i've got a few backers (ned?)

tangerine dream are one of the originators of new age. also robbie basho (a fahey-esque guitar slinger) had records released on windam hill (the king of new age) and i think he's amazing.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Linkin Park are not good artists, Dan, get ahold of yourself.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

They absolutely are, Alex, sorry. I like "In The End" and "Crawling" too much to diss them.

I can't believe I forgot about Tangerine Dream! Argh.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

how about Inspirational (ie. new gospel, christian country, etc). any good finds there?

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 27 February 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"Adult Smooth Jazz" like they play on 98.1 here in san diego. Fatburger et. al. has got to be the worst thing ever.

tylero, Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Christian Rap!

oops (Oops), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

No.

jillian (jillian), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

SOAD are no nu-metal, they're heavy metal with armenian roots. its GREAT!

not a fan of nu-metal but i kinda dig P.O.D though

rex jr., Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

nu-metal as in "grunge meets NYHC" - and yes, SOAD and Linkin Park are very much included.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:07 (twenty-three years ago)

How are you defining new gospel? Are you talking Kirk Franklin, etc?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I think he's talking "music I don't actually know anything about"

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"Adult Smooth Jazz"

There's some decent stuff here--Sade's "jazzier" work, Joe Sample... uh... this CD that gets played at work a lot is kind of pleasant. Smooth jazz gets kicked around too much. The genre that has no good artists is RAP. Why don't they call it "crap" ha ha. Get it?

adam (adam), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:29 (twenty-three years ago)

*waiting for someone to come up w/a decent Christian Rap group...I seem to remember there may actually be one*

oops (Oops), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know Christian rap, otherwise I'd name one.

(For the record, I don't mind Kirk Franklin.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

(couldn't you just make one up and say they're too obscure to be listed at AMG?)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Prog, nu-metal, free jazz, fusion, and all sub-genres with the prefix Christian-.

Burr, Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

(Looks like this took the inevitable turn towards "name genres that you think suck")

oops (Oops), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, there's no such thing as good Christian music. Every classical composer who has set sacred texts to music sucks ass.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

post-twee

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

= perv

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Pitchfork sayus Soul JUnk is good Christian rap, though i've never heard him/them.

esquire1983 (esquire1983), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Christian rap? Uh, okay. Glen of Soul-Junk is more a...well, how would I call what he does? *thinks* DB, if you're reading this, help me out here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure if it counts as a bona fide genre, but I'd say there are no decent "post-Grunge" artists: Nickelback, Bush, Candlebox, 3 Doors Down, Creed, Matchbox 20, etc.

Wait, I guess the Foo Fighters might count for Post-Grunge...and I like them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

"Lite Rock"

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark Tremonti of Creed is a great guitarist, even though he is in the cheesiest band ever (besides Linkin Park) SOAD rules, very talented.

Post-grunge-punk has got to be a genre doesn't it? There are really no good musicians there, (Blink 182, Sum 41, and all those other happy pop-punkers)

naga_pampa (naga_pampa), Friday, 28 February 2003 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Come to think of it, all Modern Rock does suck ass.

Saliva, anyone?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Friday, 28 February 2003 02:15 (twenty-three years ago)

you can't use one band to justify that a whole genre sux

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 28 February 2003 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but Vangelis is pure horseshi...ya got me

Soooo not true.

Joe (Joe), Friday, 28 February 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Glen, of course formerly the leadringer of Trumans Water, uses Soul-Junk as kinda his vehicle for whatever he's into at the time. Initially, it was more indie rock/free jazz related, then he got into jungle, and hip-hop, and now it's.. all kinda there at the same time!

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 February 2003 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we invent one? Please?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 28 February 2003 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

soul junk was almost entirely hip-hop as of the last time the prl checked in on him (9/15/02).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 February 2003 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i like a few CKY (nu-metal?) songs...

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 February 2003 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

so do most members of the Jackass crue, Bam in particular

rex jr., Friday, 28 February 2003 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

omg wouldn't it be totally IRONIC if he actually didn't!!!!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 February 2003 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

the Dolphins of the Forest suck -- what's up with their new age/punk/new romantic/white funk fusion?

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 28 February 2003 03:10 (twenty-three years ago)

that one guy does suck. the other two are totally amazing though.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 28 February 2003 03:32 (twenty-three years ago)

If the Grateful Dead are the best of the "jam band" genre, then I would have to believe these kinds of bands must all suck.

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Friday, 28 February 2003 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

really? i kind of like the Sea Doctor. He's the heart and lung machine of pop.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 28 February 2003 03:54 (twenty-three years ago)

It depends on who defines the genre "Mallcore" is a genre defined by its detractors, so it's unlikely to have any "good" artists by definition. On the other hand genres defined by mentalist aficionados are unlikely to have many "bad" artists.

I hate it when people try to define rather universal genres (like jazz) in terms that disallow a bad version of said genre.

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"mallcore" is the best genre ever. i'll always remember when Tiffany played at the large mall near the convienence store where I worked in my precious youth.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:12 (twenty-three years ago)

zydeco

Evan (Evan), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

you're an idiot

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Christian Rap - the Craig Mack album with 'Flava in ya Ear' is pretty Christian, if i remember correctly

Robin Goad (rgoad), Friday, 28 February 2003 09:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Who says there's no such good thing as Christian music? Check out 'Resurrection', a fantastic compilation of Christian psychedelia, funk and easy listening, particularly The Ted Taylor Organisation's version of He Who Would Valiant Be. You'll have to believe me (I'm not a Christian). Isn't Low's Christmas Album a Christian record too? OK, they're Mormons.

Kim Tortoise, Friday, 28 February 2003 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"If the Grateful Dead are the best of the "jam band" genre, then I would have to believe these kinds of bands must all suck."

How right you are.

John Hunter, Saturday, 1 March 2003 04:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry,
I said "sub-genres with the prefix Christian-," not "Christian music" -- big difference. (Or else I've just never heard of Christian-classical.)

Burr, Saturday, 1 March 2003 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate this thread.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Saturday, 1 March 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

does Gabba have anyone who really considers themselves an ARTIST?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

oh right gygax!, jess is the drummer

rex jr., Saturday, 1 March 2003 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)

RE: 'Smooth Jazz' - well ok I like Bob James, and sort've admire the 'polish'/studio 'chops' of most of the smoothies, but good god this music is (deliberately!) fucking tedious. Ppl love it tho' - avant-jazzers wld KILL for the same level of sales/interest enjoyed by lameo blandos like Kirk Whalun, Kenny G, Norman Brown, Pieces of a Dream, Acoustic Alchemey, etc. etc. etc. In London at least, 'Smooth Jazz' also seems to have one of the most MIXED fanbases - again, much moreso than the (MOSTLY) all-white/all-boy/all-middle class avant/improv scene.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 1 March 2003 23:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Gabba is awesomahj though. We make Gabba (amongst other styles). I'd say we were artists.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 3 March 2003 01:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Several.

Rap
Funk
Nu Metal
"Contemporary R&B"
Death Metal
Black Metal

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

can somebody post that picture of the dog saying 'this thread sucks'? i can't find it anywhere

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Geir hates fun.

How could someone hate Death Metal AND the admittedly lamentable 'contemporary r'n'b'?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, I am so glad to have Geir back.
anyway, um..
I second jam bands. I've heard nothing I've remotely liked from that camp. I work at a "hippy"-centric record store, so I hear my fair share.. I think it is possible that there may one day be a likable jam band, as I don't think their flaws are fundamental, but none that I have heard are worthy.

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Monday, 3 March 2003 05:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not going to waste my time on the jam band front (I have been, and to some extent continue to be, a fan), although I'll note that the Dead are much more than that and I consider "jam band" a referent for groups from the 80s and 90s, beginning with Widespread Panic and Phish (New Potato Caboose? Solar Circus?).

However, I'll note at least one halfway-decent band from the world of Christian rock - King's X.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 3 March 2003 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Zappa is a genre unto himself. I'll leave the rest of ILM to complete that thought.
