there'll be tears before bedtime.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I probably OWNZ dis, as a huge fan of Les Claypool, Sigur Ros, Phish, the Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, not to mention BECK, who I seem to be the only person up in here that's professed a likin' for.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I LIEK PENNYWISE@!#!##!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

can we proclaim that we don't think said artists are that bad?

If so, I don't think Sigur Ros or Norah Jones are horrible. I kinda liked Beck's last album too (note: i really don't care if there are people who do what he did on Sea Change better...does my appreciation of Zion Canyon diminish because Grand Canyou exists? no, no it doesn't)

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Not that i've heard much strife -- but can dig on some early Harry Connick Jr..

christoff (christoff), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Beck. Also like The Clash, Billy Bragg, Groove Armada, Blues Explosion, J5, Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis (the 1st two albums anyway), R.E.M., Sebadoh, Tortoise, The Strokes...

Michael B, Friday, 28 February 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Not that i've heard much strife -- but can dig on some early Harry Connick Jr..

I own an instrumental piano-jazz trio rekkid of his, and you should see people's expressions when they find it on my CD-shelf. Like "WTF?" to the power of ten.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I like some Tortoise stuff, some Clash stuff, some Pumpkins, and most J5 stuff

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i gotchas all beat. i like Frank Zappa!

(i also like Beck, the Clash, Tortoise, (pre-Green) REM, J5. but i absolutely loathe Sigur Ros, Phish, the Strokes, and Sebadoh. so there you are.)

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, can anyone who likes these maligned bands see why others think they're awful. I, for one, can.

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I like some Zappa stuff too!...only heard "Cheap thrills" and "...only in it for the money"

Michael B, Friday, 28 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

what i'm waiting for are the ILXors in the closet about their love of Coldplay, Travis, or Creed!

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

... i occasionly get the same thing for my Sade.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, can anyone who likes these maligned bands see why others think they're awful. I, for one, can.

Sure, definitely. But I can also see just as many reasons why ILM's "sacred cow" artists are just as worthy to be hated on.

Every muso, every band have at least one or two things that make them god-awful unbearable to SOMEONE out there. It just seems like no one's willing to accept that there are just as many reasons someone like, say, Radiohead or Bob Dylan or Jay-Z, who kinda occupy a "sacred cow" status up in here, deserve to be hated-on just as much as Primus or Ani DiFranco or Anticon or whoever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril, Shakira, Vanessa Carlton and Bon Jovi all rule!!!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually kinda like Shakira's Spanish-language stuff. Maybe it's 'cause I have no idea what she's saying.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I like music.
I also read NME, Mojo & The Wire.

Bill Brown, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Plenty of people around here hate on Radiohead. Haven't seen so much Jay-Z hate, but you could add me to the list if one was ever formulated.

hstencil, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

nickalicious:
maybe cuz you're imagining her booty shaking hypnotically

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think Coldplay are bad, I just can't really find anything distinct about them to warrant anyone remembering them for any reason.

Some more groups/artists I like a lot that will diminish my ILM-coolness-ratio (that was already pretty non-existant to begin with):

Rusted Root, Rage Against the Machine, Doseone, Ben Folds Five, Cake, Lyrics Born, Suicidal Tendencies, Cibo Matto (as well as *gasp* side projects!) and Wyclef Jean.

Some more groups/artists that are generally considered the creme-de-la-creme by most of ILM that I don't like whatsoever:

Missy Elliot, Sex Pistols, Fischerspooner, Jay-Z, The Pixies, and XTC.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe cuz you're imagining her booty shaking hypnotically

But I can do that to Kool Keith's Sex Style and forego her music. I actually enjoyed her music! SELF-SHOCKAH!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like the Pixies either.

hstencil, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Coldplay, Elbow, Sigur Ros, Kings of Convenience, America

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I have everyone beat:

INSANE CLOWN POSSE

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah you do.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, Jazzanova (and a whole lot of dinner party type music)...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry dan, you suck :)

I dont care if they are from Michigan, they embarass us to no end!

Mike Taylor (mjt), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps that's why he likes them. Dan hates Michigan!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

But that's part of why they're so great! Utterly shameless inanity dressed up int he guise of an evil murdering circus = CLASSIC! (The newer stuff kind of sucks dog balls, though.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

The correct word is 'teabags'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i didnt know some of these bands were uncool or hated. i thought ned and others made ilm safe for billy corgan fans worldwide.
i cant honestly think about anything to be embarrassed about. except U2. I like U2.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought ned and others made ilm safe for billy corgan fans worldwide.

Sometimes Dan and I and others fight a rough battle, but the defense is standing and remains open. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Elliott Smith. Everything up to and not including Figure 8 is really good. "coming up roses" "ballad of big nothing" "angeles" etc

Aaron A., Friday, 28 February 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought i had everyone beat w/ my zappa-love. but not even zappa-love can trump insane clown posse-love. i bow down to mr. perry.

(i also like Smashing Pumpkins -- or at least the pre-billy-goes-skinhead stuff.)

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Who doesn't like Zappa? pricks.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not very fond of Zappa? pricks. Oh, that was two sentences, my bad.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

it seems ICP have made an impression on the west coast. i really dislike them only because they're vandals

(actually that's not the only reason......)

(pic taken from my window)

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob Marley. I never hear him mentioned here. I like him.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Smashing Pumpkins are great.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob Marley is actively hated on ILM? I will not stand for this

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

not sure if he is hated, just never seen him mentioned.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Marley references on ILM

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

plus, a couple of weeks ago I started a OPO:Wailers thread

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

There've been a few emotionally disturbed times in my life when I've liked James Taylor. Those times have passed, but I have this lingering affection for some of the man's music. I feel better now.

I still love Tortoise's "TNT" too.

Jess Hill (jesshill), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

do we hate tortoise here? i didnt know that either. "glass museum" on ...millions now living... is such a magical track. i would use the adjective shimmering if i didnt know that the use of that adjective would serve to lower the regard at which tortoise fans are held arounf here|

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Oasis and the Cranberries.

s woods, Friday, 28 February 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I've really loved Yoko Ono since I was 16. I haven't met anyone "in the flesh" who would admit to liking her, but I think there are a few ILMers who might. Other than that, I used to really like the Divine Comedy too. But not so much anymore (I woke up one day, and couldn't play a DC record.)

Alexis, Friday, 28 February 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Laaasst Christmas...

Scott Warner (thream), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh that reminds me!
"Careless Whispers" is one of my favorite pop trax of all time.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do people actually hate Freak*on*ica, though? I'll admit that I had high hopes for it when it came out (GvsB finally conceding their admiration for Killing Joke -- and many other great bands like Gang of Four and the Birthday Party -- by roping in producer Nick Launay), but the end results were so limply devoid of actual "tunes" that it became virtually impossible to get excited about. But hate?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Add: Gorillaz (or at least the 1st album, they had no good b-sides, ranging form decent to bullshit) and the cover of 'Here's Where The Story Ends' (which doesn't count in context but I want to proclaim the love for the song and the singer, Shelley Nelson, somewhere...).

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

In fact (re: 'Here's Where The Story Ends'), I suppose I liked Tin Tin Out a little after all.

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Do people actually hate Freak*on*ica, though?

Uh, check my link. I don't hate every song but, using Daria's nice defense as a reference, Roxy Music -- or Stranded or Country Life -- it ain't.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Who was comparing to Roxy Music, though? Is that the sort've music you expected when you first played it?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Silkworm
2. Beat Happening
3. Vegetarian Meat/Charles Douglas
4. The Stronks Bronks Experiment
5. cLOUDDEAD

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Who was comparing to Roxy Music, though?

Not directly, dear sir -- Daria's description of the album made me think of Roxy aesthetics. As for what I expected, I expected something that followed on logically from "Bulletproof Cupid" and "TheKindaMzkYouLike" as opposed to being generic.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Man, ILM has changed.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm a relative newbie, only lurking everyday/posting every month or so since 2005:

how has it changed?

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

So I should or shouldn't come out and tell everyone (who doesn't already know) what a huge Anticon nerd I am?

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

poopsex.com

gah

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

I think Santana's Supernatural is a good album. Maybe I wouldn't say I love it but I like it a lot overall.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I'm quite a fan of the best-selling album by these guys:

sublime. the worst? i mean THE WORST???

And I just played the new Everclear album yesterday, which sounds exactly the same as every other album they've made except not as good, and I *still* found plenty of stuff to like on the thing.

(I THINK those two bands count, though it's possible they don't.)

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

I got out that GvsB album early this year and it sounded terrible, but probably more to do with time passing, sometimes albums sound different and interesting, sometimes they don't. was pretty surprised to find a thread here where a lot of people suddenly liked Hole's Celebrity Skin (great record)

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Girls Vs. Boys in their day, too (especially *House of*). They sounded kinda like a missing link between the Fall and Lifter Puller, with some Killing Joke and Pyschedelic Furs tossed in. What's wrong with that?? It beat the heck out of Jon Spencer, for crissakes (just to pick a random example of a concurrent indie hearththrob type.) (And Rockist is right about *Supernatural* btw) (or at least "Smooth," which was great. I ASSUME the rest was okay.)

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

I THINK those two bands count, though it's possible they don't.

Everclear *seemed* like a critical darling when Sparkle and Fade came out ... now, I was a senior in college at the time and not as tuned into rock-crit, but I do remember Michael Goldberg at Addicted to Noise singing their praises feverishly and calling "Heroin Girl" one of the best songs ever written. I'm not a huge Everclear fan, but I do respect Alexakis as an artist and think "Santa Monica" and "Father of Mine" were great singles.

Sublime, though, always has seemed reviled, which I don't get, because I think Brad Nowell was a really talented songwriter and that had he lived, the self-titled record would have made him an enormous star (not that he didn't do pretty damn well when he was dead, but could have been ENORMOUS).

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

I think Sade is pretty terrific.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

I really really enjoyed the disc 3 of Clapton's Crossroads that I listened to earlier. The drummer on his 70s sessions - this Jamie Oldaker character -- is shit-hot!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 03:42 (nineteen years ago)

I like "Such Great Heights" by Postal Service!!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 07:55 (nineteen years ago)

This "one-downsmanship"'s a funny thing - it's kinda disappointing to defiantly proclaim love for a performer, only to find that said performer is actually much less hated-on than you'd assumed.

Rush

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Thursday, 6 July 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Arrested Development sucked, honestly. I didn't realize Anticon got hated here, or Everclear (Sparkle and Fade is a fantastic album, one of the top 10 of the '90s, though nothing else they did really got to me).

And I like the second Stone Roses album a million times more than their debut.

But I think Chuck Eddy keeps many of the bands that I love who get a critical consensus against them from being really actively hated on ILM.

Except ICP, who I still have a soft spot for even though I realize they suck.

js (honestengine), Thursday, 6 July 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

xpost

There's a stack of Rush love on ILM.

Toad Roundgrin (noodle vague), Thursday, 6 July 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

echobelly, apparently

gear (gear), Thursday, 6 July 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

What I love most about this thread is this term actively hated on. Because you know, hated on is one thing, but *actively* hated on, I mean, that's just stepping over the line, isn't it?

Lenny Koggins (Bimble...), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

"There's a stack of Rush love on ILM."

Good, there should be.

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

The only mentions I can recall seeing about Cell were pretty meanspirited, but I thought they were a good band. First album was shoegazey grunge (indie-rock fans of Isis, Pelican, etc, might dig it actually). The second was more mellow, with lots Television-style guitar intertwinings.

todd (todd), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

I LIKE BEULAH. KIND OF A LOT. THERE. I SAID IT.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 7 July 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't know Arrested Development were hated on by ILM

Yeah there's a whole thread on Pazz and Jop hindsight based on the No. 1 P&J appearance of 3 Days, etc.

That album is still adventurous and dizzying, and old white people embracing it in 1993 is WAY less insincere than young white people singing Dipset's praise in 2006.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Friday, 7 July 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

I unabashedly, unironically love REO Speedwagon. Just the hits and well known songs, but enough to fill an 80 minute CD.

Take It On The Run, Roll With The Changes, Don't Let Him Go, Time For Me To Fly...these are all timeless immortal classics that I'll never get tired of hearing.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 7 July 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Confession: I'm part of the Rush love, in fact, I pulled out Power Windows last Saturday morning, I'd woke up early and one of the songs had got in my head out of the blue for no reason at all. That was always my favourite Rush album. Even though I can also think of criticisms to made of it in hindsight, hasn't aged well, etc. I guess it's still my favourite regardless.

Lenny Koggins (Bimble...), Saturday, 8 July 2006 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

Also WHY WHY WHY do I only have it on cassette now? Why? I used to have it on vinyl but clearly god hates me.

KT Tunstall

four years pass...

This is a thread that comes up when you search for "KT Tunstall" on ILM. Her new single "Fade Like A Shadow" is fucking awesome to me. NB once during what was pretty much the darkest hour of my life her song "Hopeless" basically kept me from falling right over the fucking cliff so there's something untranslateable about her stuff & me that has probably less to do with her stuff than with me but be that as it may this new song is totally fucking good in my opinion. I thank you for your time and as my friend Louis is fond of saying, you will find the "Suggest Ban" button conveniently located to the right of my name.
