I think i've found a band that ILM-wise is hated more than Dave Matthews Band(at least in britain anyway).
P.s.I'm a huge Dave Matthews Band fan and i agree for musicianship alone they are the best live band in the world. Sigur Ros are just pointless really. Horrible horrible pointless 'music'
This isnt meant as a flame. Just IMO.

Brenda Laing, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

They each make music for each other in Hell.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The Best Live band in the world is clearly ZZ Top.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

ARAB ON RADAR

I actually kind of like Sigur Ros's take on the "self-absorbed, meandering nonsense" style of music making, at least as far as the Itchy-Woo song goes. I don't know about forced exposure, though.

I would probably pick DMB's "I am no superman" song over them, though.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

(oops sorry Mitch) (oops sorry again)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

There are a few of us who wander the world yodelling Itcccchhyyy Wooo, just some of us don't feel the need to feed Ned's wrath.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigur Ros are bland indie rock at its worst(so its that bad)

Fiona, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Fiona, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:24 (twenty-three years ago)

dave matthews band is bland frat boy, maybe if i recite these lyrics to some drunk chicks they'll blow me music.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd think you'd want them to blow you rather than yer music, mate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Frat hoes blow me regardless of my musical taste.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

One of my favorite aspects of Sig@r R*s's music is that they're so bloody patient, something painfully lost on 99% of other bands (including my own). And when their melodies get stuck in my head, it doesn't piss me off whatsoever. And 'cause their music makes me feel.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

sometimes i get the feeling that if sigur ros was being ironic than some people would nt hate them as much around here.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually don't hate them that much -- not as much as Tad, but much more so than Dan. Irony has nothing to do with it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of my admiration for Sigur Ros went away after I saw their video for Itchy-Woo, which just creeped the fuck out of me. I kept getting the nagging feeling that, despite their intentions, they were making fun of mentally-handicapped people.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

ned your so vain you probably think my post was about you ;-)
but i think if sigur ros were pretending to be a prog band, as opposed t actually being one, then there would be chatting about the implications of their subversion or whatver.
i haven't seen the video, dan, but if it is that distasteful to me when i see it, my opinions about them will change. right now my opinion is: i am ambivalent. i wanted to check them out live before purchasing an album, but their live show is $37 and, with all of the discounts and promos i available to me, i could get the album for $5.
as for DMB, they make me sad. i have heard bootlegs from before they released "under the table and dreaming" and they sound (relatively) good. what happened?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Dead Milkmen to thread!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

poops mcgee just summed up why DMB is preferable to Sigur Ros. at least you'll get sex if you listen to it, while Sigur Ros is

Sigur Ros makes me want to kill. DMB just bores me. so it's DMB, if this is the choice.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Remember Two Things is a good DMB album.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

ned your so vain you probably think my post was about you ;-)

ME ME ME. The Nediverse has spoken.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-b-b-but I've gotten laid at least 10 times to Sigur Ros, while never once to Dave Matthews Band. In fact, Sigur Ros makes for pretty damned GOOD sex music! They're one of the only bands whose songs are both long enough and unobtrusive enough to be appropriate sex background music, at least in my experiences.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

B-b-b-b-but I've gotten laid at least 10 times to Sigur Ros

Sigur Ros' Sex Packets.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I admit getting laid to Sigur Ros as well.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

and to DMB, but I'm a pimp so...

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't find Sigur Ros sexy, so even if turns on others it doesn't turn me on. DMB doesn't turn me on, either, but DMB doesn't make me leave the room (the way Sigur Ros would), so the chances of getting laid by someone turned on by DMB are that much greater.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:52 (twenty-three years ago)

"Frequency-of-Getting-Laid-to-Said-Artist" as validation of artist's merit...C or D?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

good question nick.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

If Classic is Brian Ferry still the man that he used to be during Roxy Music's pinnacle?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had sex to Sigur Ros, too! But I saw them live in England and nice as it was (old Church and lots of candles, etc) it almost put me to sleep. They make great background music if you're doing something that isn't "listening to a record," where listening to DMB would almost surely give me "a headache, dear, not tonight."

I had forgotten about their video until this post, I remember seeing it once before my friends (Icelandic girls in London) dragged me off to their concert. I think that was then I started dreading the concert.

Alexis, Friday, 28 February 2003 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I cant understand why anyone listens to 'Indie' or 'Alternative'(whats the difference????) music at all. Whether its Sigur Ros or The Strokes its all boring. Most can barely play instruments or write songs. But we all have a right to our own opinions and i genuinely think DMB are amazing. At least its better than MTV Pop crap like Linkin Park or Creed.

Brenda Laing, Friday, 28 February 2003 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

But DMB IS MTV Pop crap! :D

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder which of the Frosh compilations they've been on.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Personally, I think Sigur Ros' music has MUCH more in common with "ambient" music than "indie rock"; especially considering the Von and () albums, which seem to be ignored or tossed aside as "pretentious" crap (generally by self-proclaimed "indie" folks).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

But DMB IS MTV Pop crap! :D

And worst of all, it has pretensions it isn't.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigur Ros over DMB, also Franco over Hitler

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

eight months pass...
god, these bands are still both total shite

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 13 November 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigur Ros is much more likely to get you sex if you are gay. That is why I like them better than DMB.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigur Ros is much more likely to get you sex if you are gay.

Dear god, that would be the most boring depressing sex ever, surely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I take it slightly back... Sigur Ros is more likely to get you *close* to sex with a closeted emo-like boy... so, yeah, depressing is otm.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

sort of like idly speculating which one of your own eyes you should pull out by its root with a fork -- or maybe that's just what it's like listening to both.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 13 November 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

+++Personally, I think Sigur Ros' music has MUCH more in common with "ambient" music than "indie rock"

agreed!

Ian Ample (rodox.video), Monday, 4 September 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Saw this today on a friend's Facebook profile, thought of this thread and LOLed:

Favorite Music:
Sigur Rós, Old 97s, Mars Volta, Beck, Ben Folds, Chris Tomlin, Dave Matthews Band, Iron & Wine, The Faint, Radiohead, Ryan Adams, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Josh Groban, Thelonious Monk, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, and quite a few more

stephen, Friday, 12 October 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

I'm still trying to grok the inclusion of Jack Johnson alongside Thelonious Monk.

novaheat, Friday, 12 October 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

One word: Starbucks

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 October 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

I'm having more of a problem with Josh Groban next to Thelonious Monk

gabbneb, Friday, 12 October 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

Ryan Adams is probably high on the ILM hatred list as well.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 12 October 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

hey lets make fun of people's lists of music they like!

chaki, Friday, 12 October 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

i mean how could someone like jack johnson AND thelonious monk!?! i cant even fathom it!!

chaki, Friday, 12 October 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

Beck, Radiohead and Louis Armstrong alongside Dave Matthews Band and Josh Groban? Now we're talking ;)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 12 October 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

now see, that's all fine and dandy, guys. but the real puzzle is the inclusion of The Mars Volta next to *everything* mentioned so far. dave matthews, thelonious monk, josh groban, sigur ros, jack johnson, THE MARS VOLTA.

does not compute

stephen, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, i thought the mars volta was for angsty, pimply-faced a perfect circle fans with prog fascinations looking for something to do til maynard's next side-project auralgasm.

stephen, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

And, you know, shitloads of other people.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

They're on MTV and stuff, they're not Dream Theatre.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

what would ILM do if MIA was on that list too

marmotwolof, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

Party?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:46 (eighteen years ago)

I like parties.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

sigur ros

kamerad, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

I like Sigur Rós, I don't like DMB, this is simple. And this was a weird thread early on, with only nickalicious really making any kind of sense.

Lostandfound, Saturday, 13 October 2007 04:17 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't really heard anything after it, but de-loused in the comatorium is classic. i remember their first ep being good to, but i haven't heard it in like 4 years

Lingbert, Saturday, 13 October 2007 06:41 (eighteen years ago)

good toO

Lingbert, Saturday, 13 October 2007 06:41 (eighteen years ago)

ILM drops a ton of hate on The Mars Volta with depressing regularity. As far as I can tell, many or even most of their songs are thrilling, unpredictable joyrides, totally unlike Dream Theater in execution.

Just got offed, Saturday, 13 October 2007 07:14 (eighteen years ago)

which thrilling, unpredictable joyride is your favorite?

Lingbert, Saturday, 13 October 2007 07:49 (eighteen years ago)

Tetragrammaton, followed by Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus.

Just got offed, Saturday, 13 October 2007 08:06 (eighteen years ago)

Louis I got the last or possibly last but one Dream Theater album to review and it sounded like Mansun

DJ Mencap, Saturday, 13 October 2007 09:50 (eighteen years ago)

waht

Just got offed, Saturday, 13 October 2007 12:22 (eighteen years ago)

The Mars Volta do sit rather well alongside those jazz names. Thelonius Monk in particular. I mean, not that they are musically similar, but still they are somewhat "artistic".
