They APOLOGIZED for dissing Pitchfork??? Twats!

MisterSnrub (Evan), Friday, 7 March 2003 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

They need lessons in assertiveness from Seth Putnam

dave q, Friday, 7 March 2003 12:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I think this actually means they're quitting...

pip, Friday, 7 March 2003 12:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Now that's funny.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 7 March 2003 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

What's it about? Did they have to apologize for something & decide to bury it in this thing? .. and what is lined-out in red?

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 7 March 2003 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

they shouldn't apologize for My Daughter The Broad, they should be congratulated!

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

The concept of a 'joke' needs to be understood more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

That's funny as hell. And it probably doesn't even matter what's red-lined if it's an allusion to people always mistaking them for Mammoth. Probably something about Juliana Hatfield.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

If you were quitting, wouldn't you write a big "Fuck off!" letter instead? I think it's hilarious.

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably not, but we can hope.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

More questions than answers here, as the letter never comes to any sort of point. If they are packing it in, why are they doing it like this? What are some other possible motivations for this? Did they recently piss somebody off real bad, and this is their way of thumbing their nose?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Matador's not going anywhere, being only a few months into a partnership with Beggars.

paul cox (paul cox), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Sander! do you have additional info?

willem (willem), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, I didn't expect it to be humorous by the posts here...it was funny!

"We're sorry for unleashing Seven Mary Three on the World"...then later: "actually that was Mammoth Records, an easy mistake to make."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

At least two of the "not getting it" posts came from the same IP, nick. I can only assume this is a windup.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, sorry, I meant TIGER BALM NUTS.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 7 March 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

BURMAKITTY TO THREAD!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 March 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I just heard Dutch act Solex has been dropped by Matador yesterday. So that's maybe why they are a little bit sorry? Any other acts dropped over the last few months?

sander, Friday, 7 March 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i can't imagine matador is doing nearly as well financially as they were, say, five years ago.... the economy is a lot worse and people aren't buying as many records, especially in japan (their economy is devastating). plus online trading probably hurts "big indies" more than anyone else. and also the "glory days" of matador indie rock have passed - no longer are pavement, guided by voices, liz phair, jon spencer, even belle and sebastian in the limelight anymore. so dropping artists, especially lesser-selling "fringe" artists doesn't really surprise me.

john fail (cenotaph), Friday, 7 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

This is vintage Gerard sarcasm.

mike a (mike a), Friday, 7 March 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

and also the "glory days" of matador indie rock have passed

The Interpol record has done quite well for them.

re: dropping "fringe" artists - I wouldn't be surprised if they had only a 2 or 3 album deal with Solex, though of course don't know the details. There's a diff between getting dropped and not getting a contract renewed.

hstencil, Friday, 7 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

http://pages.vpro.nl/3voor12/journalism/index.shtml?2534202+2584688+2584508+10920791

treblekicker, Friday, 7 March 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Like Hstencil says, surely the Interpol money must be worth something, though they've spent a lot promoting them. It's very possible that hasn't broke even just yet.

Surely the S+E reissue brought was good for the cash flow, since it has a minimal overhead cost and pretty much came pre-sold.

I think Hstencil is also correct about Solex only having a short-term contract with Matador. I seem to remember reading an interview a few years ago in which Elisabeth suggested that Hard Kick Low Bop was the end of her contract.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 7 March 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Good point Matthew about the Interpol release not breaking even since it was sold at a "discount" price for six months after its release. I think it's still selling fairly well, though.

hstencil, Friday, 7 March 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

The Large Professor 12"'s are cash cows.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 7 March 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron A., Friday, 7 March 2003 17:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I dunno - up until 1998, I still got plenty o' chuckle from these sorts of shenanigans. (Heh - Bob Gucionne Jr.) I'll take that sorta guffaw over laughing at yet another label / band trying to drum up "street team" support.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 7 March 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Any other acts dropped over the last few months?

Pretty much all their electronic, hip hop and European acts (check the "Matador Alumni" section of the drop down "Artists section" on the main page).

Vic Funk, Friday, 7 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, and here I was dreaming about a Matador/Wax Trax! venture.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 7 March 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I support Matador's apparent decision to focus on old favorites/popular indie rock, it is what they do best and what people have to come to expect from their brand name. I think a lot of the problems that they had diversifying into hip hop and electronic music has a lot to do with the stigma brand name and a lot of people skeptical about their tastes in non-indie rock music.

I think Matador's still a great label, and though they aren't breaking new artists the way they were in the early 90s, they're still putting out albums by some of the best artists in music today.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 7 March 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

interpol may have been big, but do you think it sold as many copies as, say, "alien lanes"? honestly i think downloading is killing labels like matador. even my microindie label i think was somewhat affected by the combination of economy and napstering - the arco flute cd i put out in 2002 sold poorly, despite me putting way more promotion and effort into it as compared to their better-selling 2000 release
i don't know what my point is anyway - just that matador probably sells more back catalog than new releases (at least until the new yo la tengo comes out) so i bet they're hurting, and some sort of shift in direction is due for them, which this ad might indicate. maybe signing red snapper or whatever really wasn't a great idea.

does gerard read this board? he's always seemed to be a really together, well-spoken guy from other lists i've been on with him, and i have a tremendous amount of respect for him.

john fail (cenotaph), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

john, read Billboard. Interpol's been one of the top twenty independent releases since it came out. GBV doesn't even DENT that list. Interpol's probably one of the best selling releases they've ever put out!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Agree, Cosloy's great. Also, a snappy dresser.

hstencil, Friday, 7 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

matador never broke any new artists (save liz phair but shit, tae won yu did a pretty good job on his own).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

(and they would be the first to admit this)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Its funny, for a little while.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:14 (twenty-three years ago)

(probably not the liz phair thing but at least the "break new artist" jive-sqawking).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I guess that's true, but Matador did give most of those artists a big boost and tend to get most of the credit for popularizing Pavement, Phair, JSBX, Yo La Tengo, etc.

But yeah, you're definitely right. Matador has been building itself on the backs of smaller indies since the start.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 7 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Ya know, this wouldn't have shocked anyone back around '96, when Carrie still worked for them and "Escalando" came out. I've missed this sort of sarcasm from Gerard and Co., but it's probably wishful thinking to say that it's truly back.

Raymond Cummings, Friday, 7 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it is indeed hilarious. Good job, Mat dudes.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 7 March 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, it's working. Cosloy's sitting in his plush office like, "How can we get the kids to talk about us again???? .... AHHHH I'VE GOT IT! ... I'LL APOLOGIZE!"

scott m (mcd), Friday, 7 March 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

just that matador probably sells more back catalog than new releases (at least until the new yo la tengo comes out)

I'm sure the new Cat Power is selling fine. I don't know how much back catalog they have left, though: it looks like a lot has been deleted.

Vic Funk, Friday, 7 March 2003 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex, I just noticed this thread.

Sounds like Gerard is, again, stealing my good ideas and making money off of them while I am living in the poor house in San Francisco's Mission District.

I did a similar thing on my website (SanFranciscoArtMagazine.com) on April 1st, 2001...putting this on the gateway page:
http://www.sanfranciscoartmagazine.com/april/fools.html

The concept of a 'joke' needs to be understood more.
-- Ned Raggett

Yes, indeed. Mind you, my website was entirely created on my daughter's $600 "BARBIE" computer and no one on the website was ever promised money for writing for it...yet, there were some of writers calling me up.."What do you mean the site's closing?? That's so sad, what with the dot-com bust and all. I knew we'd be next. I am so sorry to hear that. Wow...all three offices closed?!"

I thought mentioning the fact that we had "Offices" would be a clue.

Joke, people. Joke!

Yes, I think Gerard is trying to steal my thunder.

Look, he hasn't discovered a good band since the time he heard me playing a Squirrel Bait demo.

GC: "What's that?"

BK" "Ok, that's a tape my penpal in Louisville sent me. Not too shabby."

GC: It's fucking great! Are you writing him back soon? Can you put one of these here contracts in there and tell him it's "stationery" for him to write you back on. Tell him to put his signature under the part at that bottom where it says "With Love Forever" ?

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Saturday, 8 March 2003 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I never knew record labels wrote suicide notes.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 8 March 2003 04:48 (twenty-three years ago)

a couple of things...
1) the bit on the website is culled from a forthcoming print advertising campaign. We thought it was funny and are sincerely sorry if you disagree. Clearly there are some things we are sorrier about than others.

It was not meant to suggest that Matador is going out of business. Though you can bet we are VERY sorry anyone thinks so!

2) Solex. Sorry, putting a positive spin on Matador not releasing the next Solex album is beyond my capabilities. She's an amazing artist and a terrific person and we sorely wish we had room & time for everyone who fits that description. Our loss will doubtlessly be another smart label's gain.

3) "how is Matador doing?"

Not bad. As someone mentioned, the Interpol album has been one of the strongest sellers in label history. While the reduced list price was a margain killer for some time, the album has been sold at full price since January. The new Cat Power album is off to a good start and if you'd like to know more about other records that may or may not sell well, there are other places you can read about it.

4) S&E reish.

though it cost us nothing to re-record, the packaging costs were actually super high. I'm not bitching, just saying.

5) the label dropping all of its hip hop, electronic and european acts.

While Mr. Funk is partially correct, there are several artists who were not technically "dropped" (ie. they were either signed to one-off deals or their recordings were licensed from another company). That said, we have new records from the vaguely electronic Matmos and Lesser coming later in 2003, along with a new album from the vaugely european The Wisdom Of Harry.

6) my office ain't plush. Not the current one, anyway!

7) Burma Kitty.

With my head bowed, I fully admit that pretty much every decent idea I've ever had was ripped off from B.K. Some of the lousy ideas, too.

Gerard Cosloy, Sunday, 9 March 2003 08:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Out of curiosity, would you consider trying the 'reduced list price' trick again? How much of that album's success at retail do you chalk up to the low introduction price?

Yeah, SURE that's Gerard Cosloy posting.

I NEVER had a lousy idea.

...oh, wait a minute...maybe with that one guy...and then there was the time...and that one lawsuit...then there's the time I asked my husband if it would be ok if I...and then there were some message board rants...

hmm...where was I?

Oh, Gerard, I think you owe me an email. I haven't heard from you since last time I was whining about messageboard abuse.

It's ok. Don't be afraid to write.

My husband doesn't read my email.

...at least I don't think he does...

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Sunday, 9 March 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Matthew,
re: reduced list price for Interpol.

Hard for us to determine for sure just how much or how little this had to do with the album's success at retail. The cheap price made it easier for people to check out the band and certainly made it easier for stores to take a bigger initial quantity of the album than they might've otherwise. On the other hand, were it not for other things happening in concert with this cheap price campaign (ie. strong press, well received gigs, lotsa college play, good word of mouth in advance of the album, good reactions to the pre-album EP, etc.) the reduced list might've been meaningless. We did this once before with another band's debut album and struggled to sell a couple of thousand.

I wouldn't say we'll never do it again, but there's no guarantee that a reduced list would help another new release. I think it is one of those things that only works if we do it on very rare occasions and as noted above, other scenarios need to develop the right way or the price all by itself won't make any difference.

Since 'Turn On The Bright Lights' went up to full price in January, the sales have actually increased. Would we have seen similarly strong sales had the album gone out with a standard price last year? We'll never know.

Keith : as soon as Prodigy comes back, I'll start posting about the Dustdevils and Bettie Serveert again.

Gerard Cosloy, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

We did this once before with another band's debut album and struggled to sell a couple of thousand.

But Interpol didn't get 3 UK-only EPs and their full length released four months after Matador Europe released it, making the band look like an after-thought.

Since 'Turn On The Bright Lights' went up to full price in January, the sales have actually increased.

God bless Year End Best of lists.
