the soft spot remains...should i buy the new one?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 8 March 2003 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I stopped buying Ministry albums circa Filth Pig, when it became rather depressing obvious that they were stuck in a rut (one they have yet to dig themselves out of).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:03 (twenty-three years ago)

agreed. but i just read a story on them in Outburn - wondering if they are just talking the 'back to the roots' talk or actually going back to the roots.

Al quit drugs, which usually translates to 'loses the plot' (except in the case of Royal Trux, of course)

It just seemed that once upon a time there was a definitive progressionto their sound. Discounting the unjustly maligned With Sympathy(which Al refers to as an abortion), the (d)evolution of Ministry's sound from sythesized slickness to jagged abrassion (the perfect middle point being the magnificent Land of Rape & Honey) was a compelling reason to keep following them. That progress seems to have stalled at Psalm 69(now over a decade old, bizarrely enough). They definetely seem stuck in "none more black" territory. After you've channelled the howling depths of Hell itself.....what do you do next?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I couldn't have put it better myself. None more black. A decade? Jesus, I remember the videos like it was yesterday. Still, the jury is out on the new one until I can snag a copy off of MariesCDs on ebay or sumthin. perhaps a download. will let ya know

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd certainly be curious. The last thing I heard of theirs was their contribution to the soundtrack of "A.I.," which didn't exactly bode well.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Sub thread: Are the Revolting Cocks now officially a thing of the past?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard something to the effect that the Cocks were too all over the map to get the shit together again - not a *huge* loss, really....

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Nah, although there are some mighty moments on Beers Steers + Queers (itself THIRTEEN years old)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Who's your favorite cock?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:31 (twenty-three years ago)

You can listen to the new album at their website....and it starts nicely but then pretty much starts to suck. I was hoping for a whole lot more from the talk I'd heard about it, but it's just not that good. Oh well.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:31 (twenty-three years ago)

any suggestions for download?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Luc Van Acker!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:39 (twenty-three years ago)

By the way, the Ministry site is here, and you can listen to the album by clicking on the "MEDIA" link, once you get into the site.

This is depressing. I'm also a bit depressed about the new Crimson album too, maybe not coincidentally available from the same label. Hm.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think it's that bad, actually. Of course, my favorite is The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste and the new one is rather similar in spots.

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Did I ever tell you about the time I delivered a pizza to Al? It's true.

Actually, that's the whole story. Except to say that I almost didn't recognize him without the big-ass cowboy hat.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:45 (twenty-three years ago)

and the new one is rather similar in spots.

But isn't that just it, Paul? Wouldn't you prefer something a little different?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and I also have a Ministry Scar. Pit at palooza. Boot in face. Man, that was a rough pit. I was embarassed about my bleeding, purple lip until random people started saying things like, "Hey, nice lip!" and "Fuck yeah!"

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 8 March 2003 05:47 (twenty-three years ago)

But isn't that just it, Paul? Wouldn't you prefer something a little different?

Oh, I think it's different from The Mind is... for the most part. It just echoes some of the best sounds from that earlier time.

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 8 March 2003 06:47 (twenty-three years ago)

1990 was such a long time ago...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 8 March 2003 06:59 (twenty-three years ago)

1989, Ned. That pushes it back into a whole other decade.

paul cox (paul cox), Saturday, 8 March 2003 07:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Best Ministry album? My vote: Live. The one with the windsheild on the cover. Un-fucking-belivably ass-kicking.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 8 March 2003 07:14 (twenty-three years ago)

In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 March 2003 07:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't mind a Pailhead reunion. Lord knows Ian and Al need each other in these hard times.

And to trigger ther sub-Cock discussion: who are exactly are those mysterious three guys whose heads have since appeared on every Revco record? The straight shot is on the "No Devotion" 12".. and as a kid, I thought it was the band! But I got a clear clue once I saw the live footage on my Wax Trax video sampler? So, who are they? What's the picture source?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 8 March 2003 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Some Depression-era photo, I imagine. Not sure of its relevance to the band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 8 March 2003 09:15 (twenty-three years ago)

THe best Ministry album is still _Twitch_. There are a couple of higher points on _A Mind..._, _Land of Rape..._ and _With Sympathy_, but as an overall package _Twitch_ rules. Also, the CD has "Isle of Man" on it.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 8 March 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the live album is my fave too. The way the songs are stretched out and left room to breate really improves them, IMO. The songs just build and build and build. As for the new one, I heard the first track and it wasn't very impressive.
