The very long-awaited indeed (sorry Anthony!) Morrissey piece!

can we make a distinction between the anthony's here? What am I, chopped liver?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry Anthony II!

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 March 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

gah! what hath I wrought? I'm fine with the anthony/Anthony distinction. Fine piece indeed.

Yeah it is very good - loved the vampirism paragraphs. Which is just as well since at current update rates it'll be sitting on top of the site until mid April.

ooh i like it. a lot.

That's an excellent article, intelligent and thoughtful and beautifully composed (one typo: it is of course James Whale in Gods And Monsters, not James White). Can't say I care much about Moz, but I've recommended it to a friend who is a huge fan.

This article lost focus on your so called theory. Was a very bad piece.

Anthony - your posting is very inspiring, to say the least!
I only hope Morrissey gets a chance to read it and realize how many people are sick of waiting for new material to come out.

If money is not an issue, then 5 albums should have been released by now. Again, I really dig your posting, take care, Charles

This piece read a little like a second year uni student trying to write their first MAJOR work in post-colonial studies. But I liked it. I didn't, for instance, have any idea that Morrissey had a legion of Latino fans in the States. And the idea that he appeals to them because of the similarity to their native songs was interesting. I also liked the homo confessional element. My only criticism would be that it ought to have been more concrete and less abstract - ie less pretentious. The most memorable part was where the author's mother says she likes listening to The smiths because she can hum along (homo boys, their mothers AND Morrissey!) These little things say more than academic theory.

PS In a related matter, I would contend that the fact Morrissey has never come out is in fact integral to his persona, not a contradiction or an hypocrisy.

Baffling piece, the bit about your mum humming the Smiths was a smack in the face as it's oh so true, it got me thinking about my own dad, whose musical interest never crossed the threshold of tango and yet who found Morrissey "interesting"... I read your piece with a smile on my lips, longing for Morrissey, shuddering at the thought of the unsavoury You are the Quarry, bracing myself for another lifetime of waiting ( in vain?) and another 7 years pass like a dream...

Shameless self-promotion: Check out my website at http://www.shiftlessbody.com. It relates to some of the issues in this discussion. Thanks.
