Record you would pick to be seen holding on national television

Thanks to nabisco on ILE:
(I was more interested in how the record thing operated as a form of covert communication. You imagine the crew saying "can you just hold up a record to illustrate the record-trading point?" And of course he thinks for a moment and selects Pink Flag as the record he wants to be with on national television, not for the people who don't know about it but for his "peers." Everyone in the nation goes "ahh, a record," except for the thousands who go "ha, cool, he likes Pink Flag!"

I can't find a pic of the cover (and I'm sure the Forum Moderator will appreciate that) of the Lords of Acid album with the cheesy cartoon orgy of red-skinned lesbian succubi.
And we all know theres nothing more tasteful than a cheesy cartoon orgy of red-skinned lesbian succubi.

Yes, it is meant to be a reference to the Guru Guru album cover.

The Wowee Zowee painting is by Steve Keene.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

It should be noted that Pavement even used the same font used on the back cover of the Guru Gure album for all of the liner note copy of Wowee Zowee.

Along the same lines as Disco Stu's choice is the cover of Le Shok's We Are Electrocution:

The back cover is the male equivalent.

That's not the record I'd hold up, mind you. That would be this one:

not sure how well it would come across on screen, but this might be the one i want to share with the nation:

piece of eight, Sunday, 16 March 2003 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

piece of eight, I totally thought this was Dave Q. before I scrolled down and read your name, but great post nonetheless. You da man/woman!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 16 March 2003 05:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Stencil caught it too! Excellent.

It's worth noting the context of the whole thing. A 14 year old girl, kidnapped in Utah last summer, was recently found: she'd basically been brainwashed by this quasi-cultlike loner who was dragging her and his wife around the southwest covered up in robes. Evidently he'd spent some time socializing with punks in one town, including trading records with one semi-neighbor. ("He brought [something I can't remember, possibly choral music] -- [punk kid] brought punk.")

So an ABC news show was doing one of those "who was this person" investigative things, and they had an interview with the punk kid. And as that line about what records they listened to was voiced-over, there was a shot of the kid holding up a record from his collection, and he looked sort of proud and excited and was holding Pink Flag.

The advantage of using Pink Flag is that it's simple and iconic and can basically be taken in even in a second-long out-of-context TV shot. I mean, it's a pink flag. You don't even have to read it: in a half second you at least know it's a record with a pink flag on the cover, which actually identifies it completely. (If you went to a store and said "I'm looking for an album with a pink flag on the cover...")

nabisco (nabisco), Sunday, 16 March 2003 08:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Obviously in the interview Punk Kid said something like: "I always sensed something weird about them, and I worried about his wife and the girl, but since I didn't really know what was wrong I didn't want to say anything."
