Of course. And Macdonalds fund the IRA. See, MACDonalds. Get it???

Round our way the big problem is drug dealers making money trading bootleg VHS at the Saturday market. They must be brilliant at selling drugs then. Probably give them away. Dolts.

Note: I am probably completely wrong in every facet of everything I've just said.

". . . profits from widespread copying of movies, music, and software . . ."

EXCUSE ME?

gazuga (gazuga), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

the indictment is part of the DOJ's "Operation Buccaneer," in which 20 U.S. defendants have been convicted of felony copyright offenses since December 2001. ... "This indictment and the extradition sends a clear and unequivocal message to everybody involved in illegal piracy that regardless of where you are, the Justice Department will find you, investigate you, arrest you, prosecute you, and incarcerate you."

20 out of the hundreds of thousands of people who use file sharing every day, in over 1 year, is certainly proof that they'll be knocking on my door next.

You mean there's money to made off of fileswapping? Nobody told me! Where's my f@!king cut?!

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 16 March 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Piracy is a major source of funding for organized crime, and organized crime is heavily involved in drug trafficking, as are terrorist organizations (Al Qaeda and heroin, Hezbollah and cocaine), but the connections between piracy and terrorism are as slight as the connections between the porn industry or teamsters and terrorism ie. pretty damn slight ie. nonexistent. Filesharing has definitely improved the quality of pirates and street vendors product, and there ability to get the product on the streets before it even hits the stores (eg. The Eminem Show, 90% of 50 Cent's oeuvre), but to pretend that piracy wouldn't exist without filesharing or didn't exist before filesharing is ignorant and dishonest.

"I think it'd be a good idea to go out and actually bust a couple of these college kids"

Sounds good to me! Even if they haven't done anything

Seems to me the US government won't hesitate to threaten or injure those who tend to interfere with THEIR operations. Seems to me the US has caches of weapons-grade anthrax, and tested radiation on its own soldiers.Who AM us, anyway?
