I say Tatu is pure Gainsbourg. What do you say good people?

S Samson, Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

possibly if you're talking concept-wise... unless you are talking in terms of musical similarities.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

You're off the beam, son. Those girls have never even heard of S.G. Nice joke though.,

Jess Hill (jesshill), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Pah! Conceptually Tatu is pure Gainsbourg. Teenage pop lesbians? Eurotrash pop? This is a man who rolled around in bed with his daughter for Lemon Incest and told Whitney Houston he wanted to fuck on live french television! Tatu would have been a Gainbourg project if he was still alive!

S Samson, Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:39 (twenty-three years ago)

You're off the beam son. Those girls don't even know where they are half the time, and Serge did.

Jess Hill (jesshill), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I am saying that Gainsbourg would have invented Tatu if he had been still alive.

S Samson, Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i do doubt whether t.A.T.u. will ever get to recording "their own" equivalent of Melody Nelson, though

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

the mere existence of this thread makes me happy to be alive

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

A friend who sub-edits on an art magazine asked me to write something. I suggest this but now I am not sure if it would pan out!!!! I thought it would be fun but now I am not so sure!!! Egads!

S Samson, Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:51 (twenty-three years ago)

If Serge had been behind the boards on t.A.T.u, they wouldn't be quite as tame. Less angstful, too.

In other words:
Serge = dirty
t.A.T.u. = sweet
T-Rex wins!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Daniel's conclusion is wise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Lord a-mercy, what in the fuck do the two have in common?

That's all I wanna know, enlighten me!!

Jess Hill (jesshill), Sunday, 16 March 2003 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Does your mother know that you use that mouth, Jess? : - D

There are connections there but what has stopped me from writing is basically as Daniel suggested above. It would have been entertaining to write but at the same time there was not enough there to substantiate my original thesis. Though I could have lied.

* Speaking of sex and war, we hear that Interscope Records reps of the Russian teen lesbian duo Tatu, Julia Volkova and Lena Katina, promised Jay Leno executive producer Debbie Vickers that the girls wouldn't deep-kiss on Tuesday's "Tonight Show." When they did anyway, during a performance of their hit tune "All the Things She Said," the cameras cut to the guitar player. But they did show the Russian-language message on their shirts--which they later learned was "[Expletive] the War!" A tearful Interscope publicist told the angry producers, "They're out of control!" The next night, on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Show," Volkova and Katina wore shirts reading "Censored," but wrote their favorite dirty Russian phrase in ink on the host's hand. (The network managed to bleep out Tatu's translation.) Yesterday NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks told us: "Bez komemtariev." That's Russian for "no comment."

thought it mattered enought to post / carry forward the thread

so they have both said "fuck" on tv and made it controversial.

Serge with Whitney / Tatu with t-shirts

Nik (Nik), Monday, 17 March 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Interesting! Maybe my first and only foray into music journalism still might be on!

S Samson, Monday, 17 March 2003 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

God, these girls rule.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 17 March 2003 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

What does T.A.T.U. mean?

Famous Athlete, Monday, 17 March 2003 05:39 (twenty-three years ago)

MOMUS TO THREAD! MOMUS TO THREAD!!

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 17 March 2003 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I assumed it was a pun on "Tattoo". I'm probably quite wrong, though.

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Monday, 17 March 2003 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

What does T.A.T.U. mean?

It's Russian slang for "She loves her" (or something similar).

Vic Funk, Monday, 17 March 2003 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Just reading this thread (utterly bemused, might I add!) however couldn't help noticing the reference to Tatu promising execs on the Leno show that they wouldn't "deep-kiss"... I've never heard this phrase before. Has the US media proscribed the use of "French-kiss" like in French fries - surely if this is the case they would be "Freedom-kissing"...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

My girl translated Serge for me whilst we were doing some painting a few weeks ago. Serge is INCREDIBLY dirty! : - o
