best ever songs for air guitar

"Underneath It All" by No Doubt actually has an extremely air-guitar-worthy breakdown, the chugging metal chords coming back in from the bridge, sans drums, sans bass, to remind you that No Doubt still "rock", which makes it a perfect candidate, as it's sort of like the air-guitarer has actually influenced the sound of the song by plucking his magic invisible instrument out of the air and "playing it"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm, don't know that one.

I'm partial to classic rock for air guitar, myself. AC/DC, Big Star, Sabbath, ELO, you name it.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The entirety of "Back in Black."

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I got blisters on me fingers from air-guitaring "Paranoid Android".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"Back in Black" is the reason air-guitar and head-banging exist.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

"Back in Black" rules. I wish classic rock stations played "Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" more often.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I cant play air guitar

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

you can hone you chops with a prop - even some v v experienced air-guitar players will use hockey sticks, brooms, etc

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

tennis rackets are good as well.

hstencil, Monday, 17 March 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

"Whole Lotta Love" -- Jimmy's fills after the breakdown are to die for.

CRUNCH CRUCH --da di da di do da do
CRUNCH CRUCH --da di da di do da do do do
CRUNCH CRUCH --da di da di do da di di
CRUNCH CRUCH --da di da di do da do

You've been coolin'!
Baby, I've been droolin'!

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark my love for "Whole Lotta" is immense but part of the premise to my question is that there are some songs where air guitar is such an unexpected re/action that as miming/stupidity fodder the tune vaults head and shoulders over, let's face it, songs where even the worms in the ground are doing little windmills and "rock" grimaces it's so obvious

I think my fave part to play on air guitar is rhythm actually, preferably eight-note rhythms where I can pretend the strap is hung REALLY low, so I'm like picking the spot on my leg just above the knee

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

bob snoom to thread.

(he wrote me a letter saying accompanying the nancarrow CDR he gave me that he plays air guitar to it so he's obv ''qualified'').

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

You're talking about air-guitaring and you cite NO DOUBT?!?!?!?!?!?

Get ahold of yourself, man.

Surely, "Whole Lotta Rosie" by AC/DC owns this.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah, Van Halen owns this shit.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been known to play "air guitar" to, like, the Aphex Twin - having grown up on rock, I sometimes automatically play a guitar downstroke to any music that's really "movin' me." Dorky to the max!

Sam Jeffries (samjeff), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Honor the Angus! Yeah, there's some little vocal thing at the beginning to tip you off that the song's about to start so the experienced air guitarist can come in at just the right time, works with the "dude, you just controlled the music with your AIR GUITAR" thing, deffo

that song must honestly be the most blistering song in the world

the No Doubt song is my favorite single in the whole damn world right now, I never get tired of it, the air guitar thing is frankly just a bonus, but it's a mighty good one

"Aerojamit" by Ural 13 Diktators is PERFECT for this, the first 64 bars or whatever is just like "oh yeah, techno" but after the enormous snare-rush all structure vaporizes, revealing some kind of ultimate robo-wahwah nirvana

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

"November Rain" = more air-guitar-inspiring geetaring than you can shake a stick at.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sweet Jane" intro, R&R ANIMAL version. "More Than A Feeling".

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

My personal favorite, actually, is "To Hell With Poverty" by Gang of Four, but still....."Whole Lotta Rosie" (or indeed someting by Van Halen..."Unchained," maybe) rules this concept.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Surprise air-guitar fav: I just caught myself air-guitaring along to Talking Heads' "Found a Job". That's got an infectious rhythm.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

It's gotta be a Led Zep tune: I say "Heartbreaker"

david day (winslow), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Add to the nickalicious' air-guitar list: "Maggot Brain", complete with pained/inspired air-guitar faces.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I would NEVER air guitar to that song, not sure why

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Lead: too drunk to fuck
rhythm: i'm partial to anything that allows for a lot of windmill action

order some disorder quick, Monday, 17 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

that no doubt song is my favorite right now too...the moment where lady saw comes in is like the clouds suddenly part and god rains gifts of enlightenment down upon yr head

anyway, obvious un-obvious answer: public enemy

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I would NEVER air guitar to that song, not sure why

For some reason I actually totally understand...but I was drunk as a Pogues lead singer Saturday night and there's video footage of me air-guitaring "Maggot Brain" on there, complete with the orgasm-faces. Maybe it's different 'cause actually I've played that song to an audience before though (on a non-air guitar, that is).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

naturalaw-dp, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 07:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha I've never once thought about air-guitaring to Yes even tho they're one of my favorite little bands.

Anyway, "Won't Get Fooled Again" OWNZ this thread.

I mean, you get the opportunity to pretend you're Pete Townshend for god's sake.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 07:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i always dance around and play air guitar during daft punk's "aerodynamic"

someone should make an air guitar mix tape/cd and then have an air guitar dance party.

I cannot stop myself from air-guitaring that part in Roger Miller's "Dang Me" where he sings along to what he's playing "doot doot doot dee doomp pah doo doo doo".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 12 January 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

All reet! About time somebody spoke up for air-DRUMMERS - #3 and #9 are particularly well-suited to such a pathetic sub-species, I can confirm.

Myonga Von Wannabee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 12 January 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

air guitar should be outlawed... annoying shit.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Friday, 13 January 2006 07:38 (twenty years ago)

Ill second or third or fourth More than A Feeling. (Havent read the thread but logically assume it's been posted at least 3 times). Also, don't fear the reaper.

And "Sister Christian" totally evokes air drums and air keyboard.
