I just started dating a new girl and her birthday is tomorrow. I am taking her out for a nice dinner, and I am going to drop a mix cd on her. She is not a big music fanatic, so all this stuff is going to be pretty much brand new to her.

I was trying to get some kind of moody going which starts out mellow and works it's way up. I am trying to stay with the hits and the obvious stuff that is catchy, what do you guys think?

Here is goes:

Suzanne: Leonard Cohen
Perfect Day: Lou Reed
Let The Train Whistle Blow: Johnny Cash
We Are Going To Be Friends: The White Stripes
Psychokiller: Talking Heads
Marque Moon: Television
Roadrunner: Modern Lovers
Luv Machine: Blonde Redhead
Controversy: Prince
Moody (spaced out): ESG
Deceptacon(LCD Soundsystem remix): Le Tigre
24 Hour Party People: Happy Mondays
White Lines: Grand Master Flash
The Message: Grand Master Flash
It's Like That: Run-DMC
Pearl: Chapterhouse

Sounds pretty good. Shouldn't scare her off. Bonus points for Lou Reed's "Perfect Day".

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I would drop the Chapterhouse at the end and put in a nice gospel/nu-soul/powerful ballad. Maybe 'Bridge over Troubled Water' by Aretha. It is for your girl afterall!

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

And maybe splice up the '77 revival a bit more. It runs like a classic rock radio station.

extra bonuis points for surf's up.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i reckon you wanna open with one of the punchier trax - mebbe "roadrunner"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

It builds nice and slow. I would add more romance to it not detract. You should open up with a Lenny Bruce or Richard Pryor monologue; funny and political! Bonus points!

S Samson, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

small nitpick, I'm pretty sure the deceptacon mix is the "DFA Mix"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

send me your address, so I can mail you a hair to split. :)

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I think you are absolutely right Samson, there needs to be more ladies jams.

Perfect Day: Lou Reed
I'll Be Your Mirror: Velvet Underground

If you going out with a guy its great!

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 02:04 (twenty-three years ago)

damn, that is cold.

Where am I going wrong?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

here's where you're going wrong: girls never appreciate music the way we overgrown boys do.

That said, I think you've done a fine job putting on the hits, obvious as they may be to us here in freaky geeky land, but i agree you should put Suzanne on later - start with something rockin

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzanne is a great song, but don't start the disc out w/that if her name is Suzanne.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Also that Blonde Redhead song is very nice...sounds like a nice mix w/the right balance of gentleness & non. I would give it many a pleasant listen and submit to a few consequential swoons, but from above comments it sounds like I am the world's only girl who falls for mixes.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 02:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not saying girls don't fall for mixtapes - i'm saying that most of them would be just as content with the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, or, to a lesser extent, the latest Now That's What I Call Music compilation.

anyone ever make the same 'personalized' mixtape for more than one person? Just me then?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Good job dropping 'We Are Going To Be Friends' but you should have slipped on 'Fell In Love With a Girl' instead. And if you're going to go aggressive/obvious with the titles/lyrics (and I think you should), you might want to leave 'Psycho Killer' off . . .

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I make the same mix for more than one person all the time, but only when I think they won't find out...ie with pen pals who don't know each other. If it's for the usual coterie then I get called "jerkface".

Fivvy (Fivvy), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i am the coolest girl alive and i make total shit of your theory, rog

minna (minna), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The only problem about fell in love with a girl is that it is basically about a guy who fell in love with a slut and is repremanding himself. Probably better than Psycho Killer, but not by much.

I was also seriously considering Ooh, Baby, Baby by Smokey Robinson, but that song is basically about estrangement and a fellow hoping to get back into his girl's good graces again. Till then, he's cryin'

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

the other thing is that I am already in there, I don't need this tape to win her over.

Like i said above, she is very cool and intelligent, but she isn't an artsy music chick. She sings along to Journey, if you know what I mean. There is nothing wrong with that, she just asked me to make her a tape of the kind of things I like. The trouble is that I want to expose her to the things I like in a way that will not require a HUGE leap. I am trying to meet her half-way if you know what I mean. Hence, not Throbbing Gristle, Burrough's Tape experiments, or Pan Sonic tracks.

There are quite a few women who are reading this thread, what do you like about mixes? Do you have any particular preferences?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Every girlfriend and or wife I've ever had loved soundtracks. Why is that?

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say bring back the Chapterhouse, but I'm biased and you are not dating me.
