artists/albums you like a lot but only need to hear once a year or so

Inspired by this thread, and by listening to the Cramps' Songs the Lord Taught Us tonight. The album's an old favorite, even though I'm not really a Cramps "fan" or anything (I just can't deal with the whole gestalt)... so when I put it on I was really into it but about seven songs in ("Mystery Plane" I guess) I was like "Well there you have it. I've just filled my Cramps quota. Now I don't have to listen to them for another year."

Yeah, the Ramones is a good choice.

I mean, to me Songs is perfect, but in a v. static, formulaic way that doesn't give me enough breathing room to wonder what makes it perfect (which is usually the reason I revisit favorite albums/bands/songs ad nauseam... they're like museums I want to break into at night); it's there, it exists without me, it's a self-feeding kind of perfection that never needs me to make anything happen or even acknowledge how good it is (all you other annoying punk kids have already done that), and the high I get from purely listening/enjoying only lasts until I decide I've had enough and need a better or different high.

I was thinking of the Ramones too... I'd say I only need to listen to them once every four months.

I can usually break it down into seasons. In the spring, I listen to some hair metal and skate punk (I don't have a cassette player anymore, so this gets harder every year). In the summer, I listen to indie rock like Pavement, GbV, Archers, etc. In the fall, I go back to the late 80's and dig out the Church, U2, The Cure, New Order, etc. I spend the winter inside downloading and finding out about a lot of new things.

Husker Du (never you mind what I said on that OPO thread just now).

maybe the smiths?

though i think my mere mentioning of them in this thread might spark a deep yearning to listen to their music continuasly for the remainder of the year just to rebel against my declaration.

probably not, though.

The Beatles, esp. The White Album. Anymore than a sprinkling of Beatlemania drives me up the wall. Even the red album gets no more than 2 outings a year. But I REALLY REALLY like them, and I sing along like a madman to Rubber Soul, but I can't be doing with too much of them.

Even things like Urban Hymns and After The Gold Rush and Blood on the Tracks I can only listen to every so often before they drive me up the wall . . . I think this phenomenon is far more common than people suspect. With all the above mentioned albums, I know every word, evey note, every nuance. Hell, I even know the gaps between the tracks down to the microsecond so I can join in at the right moment. DOes this perfect recall mean that there's no NEED to listen to these albums, that they just get boring on me?
