Grosse Point Blank

There's a really cool song on the soundtrack, possibly on it twice, once at the beginning and once at the end. It gets played on the radio just as Cussack's driving into Grosse Point for the first time, before The Clash and The Pixies get played, and it's got a really good lolloping groove to it and loads of personality, acoustic guitar, bass (maybe stand-up), good drums; Driver's doing her radio show and after it's finished she announces its an "all-80s weekend" and namechecks The Specials, The Clash and Morphine (who are surely a 90s band?). It may well get played again as Cussack and Driver leave town at the end of the film. Who the fuck is it? Is it Morphine? It's really really good... Please help me!

Dur, I'm a twat. Checked AMG for the OST and it's Violent Femmes, innit?

There are two different versions of the Femmes' "Blister in the Sun" available. Big hands, I know you're the one.

of course...should've mentioned this on the 'songs you can't help associating with films' thread. IMO Grosse Point Blank is actually a great film on the subject of music-in-our-lives ie its centrality to memory etc etc yada yada

Plus the Live & Let Die moment is magnificent.

More importantly - what's the track that's playing on the dancefloor when he fights with the hitman in the corridor, or around that time. It's very sentimental, a 'slow' number. I have unresolved 'stuff' with this track, now you've reminded me.. ach, what IS IT!

I can't believe someone didn't know this. Is this song not as ubiquitous in the UK as it is in America?

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't it '99 red ballons' by nena? shit i need to watch that film again!

el wanko, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

is it the e.cola remix of pete townsend's "let my love open the door"?

otto, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 20:47 (twenty-three years ago)

The only song I can remember around that scene was "Go" by Tones on Tail ... not a slow one, though..

it feels sort of draggy though in the yayayayayayaya bit.

Best song in the film = "Matador" by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

so, you're in your 20s, you probably are in or have already graduated college, and you still haven't heard this song? one night in a collge town and you're likely to hear it 10 different times in bars or on the radio even.

and what's with the age excuse? have you never heard of the beatles? they broke up before you were born.

i'm not really slagging you for not hearing the song, that's not your fault, i just thought it would be hard to avoid it.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 20 March 2003 07:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, aye, I'm 23, a graduate, soon to be doing an MA, but Violent Femmes haven't really got much airplay on radio or in student bars/pubs/clubs (certainly not the ones I've been in, though that's not many) in England over the last few years.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 20 March 2003 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)

no the 99 red balloons bit starts as they get rid of the body,
with the drum part memorably timed to kick in just as they run down at high speed down the school stairs.

piscesboy, Thursday, 20 March 2003 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it may be the E.Cola track. Digging it out right now..... I owe you one if it is, otto.

nick.K (nick.K), Thursday, 20 March 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

NO WAY, I've got one of those connections that lets you hear it as fast is it downloads. Yes, this is the track...... oh my god, it all comes rushing back .... choke ...
