Snoop Dogg 'Beautiful'

Saw the video for this, that's a pretty out beat for a 'mainstream' hip-hop tune, definitely one of the more unique Neptunes tracks. Also, raw Brasilian batucada in a Snoop Dogg video!!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 08:25 (twenty-three years ago)

sounds like same ol neptunes to me

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 08:32 (twenty-three years ago)

whoa! seriously, i was just watching this on the mtv site and was going to post something about it and came back and here it is.

i think it's pretty rad that snoop went beyond the g-funk w/that song. and he must be lacing his weed w/something spicier to keep him on for something so upbeat.

i have never (and probably will never) owned a snoop album, but all of his recent public appearances (jimmy kimble show, man show - i know it's the same thing, snoop tele-vizzle) are making me really like him. he's damn funny.

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 08:35 (twenty-three years ago)

snoop is just lucky he bought the song from the neps before anyone else did. whoever got that song would've had a hit with it. but of course snoops delivery works.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 08:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Chaki, it's obviously the Neps, but that beat? There isn't a 2 or a 4 hit anywhere, that's pretty ballsy for them. It's not like my mind is blown or anything, but it's refreshing.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

yah its gotta new orleans shuffle thing goin on

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i only have this to say to doubters,,,,,,,,, brazilian women

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

ahh it's got the neps written all over it, but it's the greatest thing they've done in a while. i love that gospel chorus with the music fading out and then coming back.. classic!
the rest of the album is pretty strong too

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 09:25 (twenty-three years ago)

You're right about the New Orleans thing...hmmm, I should make it into a brass band song, it's a natural.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 09:37 (twenty-three years ago)

holy shit, it's on the radio right now and is clearly classic. all i could hear at first was pharrell's voice. you know it's neptunes before anything else sinks in. they've started using that voice as a little brand-identifier - it ties together their most disparate sounding records.

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

just wanted to share: this radio station (Kiss? probably...) has just played 'Beautiful' then 'In Da Club' then the Zero 7 'Provider' version, all in a row. and the sun is out, kinda. oh happy day...

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Pharell's voice is way cool. I think I like him best
on the first track of _Nigga Please_, so smooth and sly.

was was (Squirrel_Police), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 10:53 (twenty-three years ago)

u mean 'recognize'? is that him??

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

he does 'Excuse Me Miss' with Jay-Z - i like the flanged orchestral synth on that one

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a great song. Better, I think, than Excuse Me Miss. It's funny though that Jay and Snoop both have these absurd, high concept videos that feature Pharrel, relentlessly haming it up.
In the Ecuse Me Miss video Jay- works in an office building and there's a funny shot where he pilots a helicopter.
I've been hearing that Brazilian hip hop heads are not happy with Snoop and Pharrel's invasion of their country, and the subsequent harrassment of its women.

theodore fogelsanger, Wednesday, 19 March 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I will point anyone who ever accuses me of hating ALL mainstream/pop hip hop to this statement: I like Snoop Dogg's 'Beautiful'...hell, I even like the *gasp* singing. Nyah!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:01 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a nice song. Pharrell's voice is pretty thin but it suits this song. I kinda agree with chaki that almost anyone could have made this work though.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder how many, if any, of the Neptunes's productions were nearly-finished and then just "given" to the name star once the contract was signed. Snoop does well here, but it doesn't really match his personality in any essential way, so I can imagine such a scenario.

Amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Chaki is exactly right. This song sounds like everyone involved just mailed it in. Snoop has relied solely on his personality to carry him post Doggystyle, but songs like this just manage to obscure whatever personality he has left.

Kris (aqueduct), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

But nobody has mentioned the bateria breakdown in the middle of the video!

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

you did twice

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Just because I say it doesn't make it true.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i find that little rhythmic reprise at the end quite touching.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 21 March 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

yes i really like that end bit. otherwise i don't really feel one way or the other about it. 'from the chuuuch to the palace' was way better.

minna (minna), Saturday, 22 March 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I just love Snoop's relationship with self-parody, which is basically that a knowing self-parody is actually the most wonderful thing he can offer you. He's like a cartoon at this point, but in the sense of Charlie Brown trying to kick the football: Snoop please don't ever manage to kick the football, it's the last thing anyone wants!

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 22 March 2003 08:03 (twenty-three years ago)

But what achievement is it that you imply Snoop has suspended?

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 22 March 2003 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Okay, ILM is my recorded proof. On March 19th I said this tune would make a good brass band song...I was in New Orleans this weekend and not only did Rebirth Brass Band do it, but they KILLED it. Definitely better than the original in this case.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't listen to this song, or any song where Pharrel tries to sing "sexy" on the chorus.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

hell, I even like the *gasp* singing

That's actually what made me notice the song! And Snoop's got, um, nice flow, I guess. I hate to sound like Geir, but I like a little melody in my hip-hop. (Even if it's just a catchy backing track, like "In Da Club.") But "Beautiful" is aces.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm having hysterics imagining Snoop singing the Christina Aguilera song. Crouching in an abandoned room, looking in the mirror...

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

two weeks pass...
Snoop has to crouch in any room, he's like 8ft tall.

Nick H, Sunday, 25 May 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Snoop's voice sounds so fun and infectious, but overall
he's not a great rapper, and gets boring fast. That's
why he sounds so good here, sharing the spotlight with
Pharell and a bangin' Neptune backing track.

squirl plise (Squirrel_Police), Sunday, 1 June 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought this was one of the tightest rhymes I've heard Snoop do in a long time! Of course, it was a sunny day and I was high as fuck too, so that helps the appreciation.

The beat is great, a little rhythmically adventurous for the Neptunes, but still very straight-forward and signature for their style. I love the way the chorus is actually like 2 different choruses, and the second one doesn't come in 'til later, it's like a little extra treat for being so patient. Plus, Pharrell's singing voice seems like it's getting better and stronger with every new song they put out.

And btw, that's not Pharrell singing on the first track on Nigga Please, it's Chris Rock (who also contributes rhymes on that song). < /pedant>

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 2 June 2003 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

hey wait that is pharell tho, the 'you need to recognise' bit??

minna (minna), Monday, 2 June 2003 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

('beautiful' has grown on me a lot, like 'hot in herre' did - i thought that was dead boring typical neptunes when it first came out too)

minna (minna), Monday, 2 June 2003 12:27 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven years pass...

"California Roll" w/Stevie and Pharrell is pretty great sunshine music

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 May 2015 14:04 (eleven years ago)

the whole album tbh

The Reverend, Wednesday, 20 May 2015 07:05 (eleven years ago)

"R U a Freak's" my favorite off the album, like when Pharrell/Hugo use that kind of ambient synth

This one I never ranked as one of my favorite Snoop/Neptunes collabs though
