Bobby Orlando, say some things about him.

Not a thread on him already, so here we go.

Best tracks?
What's he up to nowadays?
Wasn't he handsome?! (I was expecting a squat bald black guy but no, he's this chiselled Italian brute.)
Does he hate Neil and Chris or are they chums again?
Anyone seen him or one of his acts live?
Why did he keep using different variations on that (ace) 'Passion' synthline on manymanymany of his songs?
Am I alone in thinking 'Take a chance on me' by Waterfront Home is his best ever thing?
Did he write the songs as well as produce them? Will he ever return to music?
The best song on the new PSB album is 'try it (in love with a married man)' - is this any relation to the 'in love with a married man' track by Bobby O, and is it any cop?
"One of his most successful associations ended understandably abruptly when he claimed he could "cure" the artist of his homosexuality" - who was this?

If Old Fart is still mooching about then this is a call out to you, as you seem to be big into the guy.

I like how he got into Glitter Rock because "it was OK to be a capitalist. I mean platform shoes are expensive, right?".
I also like how he said "I regard each record I make as worthless and useless just like anybody elses".
I'm interested by how he was/is a raging homophobe yet his music was aimed squarely at a gay audience.

If you wanna read more check out http://www.hinrg.net/index2.html

I'm sharing shedloads of his stuff on ssk so feel free to grab.

(for the unaware Bobby O = early 80s NY based hi-nrg disco producer with vast stable of artists inc The Flirts with ace revolving bandmember concept)

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

My brain stuck on that. I was thinking bobby Sherman and Tony Orlando at the same time. Guh!

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, just discovered that I have that 'Try it (I'm in love with a married man)' song. It's by Oh Romeo and it's nothing on the PSB version - no vocoders for a start. Decent metallic hissing backing beat though.

Someone give a step-by-step guide to making a Bobby O track please.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

he needs to get credit for making felix da housecats last album. the best thing about it was the flirts sample. (from the song "passion"). a lot of his productions I find a little too cheesy vocally but musically along with patrick cowley - he the man.

simon 803 (simon 803), Thursday, 20 March 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

the sleevenotes for the 2001 'please' re-release aims a wee bit of
friendliness his way, and if memory serves, it has neil and chris
rattling on about the tracks of his they liked enough to want him
producing their records in the first place.
on reading the tracklist of 'disco 3' i couldn't help but wonder
if that '...married man' track was in fact the one they wrote
in 89 but never recorded called
'she's in love with the man she married'. maybe not.
didn't know bobby o was a homophobe though.

and while we're on a psb tip
(and not to hijack the thread)
the only track i liked off their
'release' record was 'the samurai in autumn'.
such a disappointment after 'nightlife'
which i thought was the dog's.

piscesboy, Thursday, 20 March 2003 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I wouldn't mind checking out that little PSB O thing. Nope Pisc, 'Try It (...)' is a redoing of the Oh Romeo track though they might have had a hand in writing it way back when. Snag it off me on Ssk, it's halfworth hearing.

Simon, what Felix track is the 'Passion' sample on? I can't believe he's STILL wringing usage out of it, as good as it is. And what's this Patrick Cowley chap all about?

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

re: Bobby's bigotry. The interviewer might've been bending the truth a touch but she describes him as "a homophobe who once pulled out of buying an apartment after discovering that the previous owner was gay" along with the 'cure' thing as mentioned above. I think he's some intense Christian so that might go some way to explaining why. He recently wrote a book discounting evolution or some shit.

Ian SPACK (Ian SPACK), Thursday, 20 March 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)

'O' Medley must be the greatest disco track ever. I mean, really. It doesn't get any more throbbing, swoony, ecstatic, camp, you name it, than this.

bugged out, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The 4 extended Ben Liebrand mixes are indescribably good too.

iAN SPACK, Tuesday, 11 November 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

had sworn this must be a Gareth thread from the title but no. ah well.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The original version of "One More Chance" is clearly better than the non-Bobby-O-one on "Actually".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
OK I have had "How to Pick Up Girls" and "I Cry For You" on repeat for the last hour. Will it ever get old? "I Cry For You" might even be better than "German Girl."

How come I didn't know anything about Bobby O until this year??

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

When will I ever hear anything by Bobby O (other than 'I'm Hott 4 U')?

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have slsk? If so search for allyzay asap and you can download whatchoo want. If not, email me your address, I'll send you a mix CD.

I mean, this stuff is amazing.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

err slsk just crashed, scratch that.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I'm still in Ghana for at least a few more weeks if not longer.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Well that gives me plenty of time to actually make it and send it, which I'm notoriously slow at. Send me addy to email above!

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

best but least known bobby o produced track:

New York Dolls-Love on Video

biggest hits:

Flirts-Passion
Divine-Native Love(Step by Step)

Don't sleep on later Memo records hi-nrg stuff:

Hotline-Guilty
Charlene Davis-Aggression

Remember Bobby O could rock the New Wave Dance:

The Flirts-Don't Put Another Dime in the Jukebox
Barbi and the Kens-Just a Gigilo

Ally - it's done.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the Flirts' 'Calling All Boys' and loved it to bits, wanted more, but found 'Don't Put Another Dime in the Jukebox' pretty awful and not the same at all. More 'Calling All Boys' type recommendations, please!

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You should get Passion, Dan S. is correct. Jukebox is a pretty awful track, I agree with that.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

If you think Don't Put Another Dime in the Jukebox is awful you obviously didn't grow up watching Valley Girl!

Most early Flirts stuff is more in the style of Calling All Boys but isn't that great, the big hit was Passion, especially the really long italo mix. Later they went almost in a freestyle direction. And by "they" I mean Bobby O, of course.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I've actually never seen Valley Girl.

That's a really good list of songs. I find it difficult to find the original version of West End Girls though? Everyone on slsk has the version on the best of, pretty much.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got the original West End Girls on a mix album from 1984 called "Dance Mix Dance Hits Vol. III" (or was it Vol. IV?). Can't currently burn vinyl to MP3 though... sorry.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the original is also on Best of O Records vol 2 I think.

Nice list Mike, but you should really substitute some of the later stuff I mention, the Hotline and Charlene Davis tracks are great.

and what about Eat Em Up Yum Yum or whatever it's called!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want more Flirts then these come highly recommended by me:

I have two Studio 57 dubbel lps! Lots of Bobby O and Vivien Vee and hi-nrg/italo crossovers. My fave discovery, don't remember which one, is Rofo's Flashlight on a Disco NIght or something, Belgian I think, awesome.

Don't know anything about this NY Dolls track, but Jerry Nolan drums on part of Lyn Todd's 1980 album, produced by O. It's a strange early hiNRG/rock thing - she does "Rebel Rebel" etc...

I feel extremely dumb for never having heard 'Passion' until now (courtesy of PSBs 'Back To Mine'). :(

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 14 July 2006 11:23 (nineteen years ago)

I'm very very very surprised by that Stevem. Is it just 'Passion' that escaped or have you missed out on most Bobby O stuff? If so let me know and I'll get a 15 track primer cd over to you. Some wonderful stuff in there. And about 80% of his stuff sounds like a remake of 'Passion'. (No bad thing, clearly).

Affectian (Affectian), Saturday, 15 July 2006 09:30 (nineteen years ago)

I was reminded of his genius while on vacation. I am fine with that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 15 July 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

look for the Passion 12" w/ the 9 minute italian remix, that's just sublime. But yeah, most of his songs are the same, the same octave bassline with that do-do-do-do-do-do part on top. I know that doesn't make sense, but after you've heard a few you know what I'm talking about.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 15 July 2006 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ian, 'fraid so. Shocking ainit. I dunno if it's just me but he never seemed to get talked about much in 90s dance press (the main way i would've been likely to hear of him) compared to Moroder and it wasn't until the emergence of electroclash and modern electropop that I really knew of him. Or rather I didn't know of the name til I started reading ILM. Even since then I've somehow never got round to hearing much of his stuff. So if you do have a primer CD knocking around I would gratefully receive.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Saturday, 15 July 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Ok, I'll knock one up and either post it out to you or do a YSI thing with it.

Probably the most blatant example of what Dan describes is New York Models 'Fashion' which is about 99.5% the same song except with a f instead of p. Still great though. The stuff he did with Waterfront Home is probably most different from the 'Passion' sound, but still very very good.

Affectian (Affectian), Saturday, 15 July 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

The drum programming on "I'm So Hot For You" is incredible. FACT

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 15 July 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

weird, above I mention my fave Bobby O track as Love on Video by the New York Dolls. That should read New York Models.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 15 July 2006 16:41 (nineteen years ago)

I've been listening to Orlando productions for the past two weeks on and off while cleaning up music on me hard drive and quite a lot of it is really quite great. My fave of the moment is easily One Two Three's 'Another Knife In My Back' which is as hateful and mean-spirited a song as I've ever heard.

Man, got The Flirts album for $2 and had no idea who this guy was. Awesome stuff. What else should I search from him?

I eat cannibals, Monday, 8 October 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

"These Lies", "German Girl" and everything else mentioned above.

Spinspin Sugah, Monday, 8 October 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

Any power pop fans out there, should check out Bobby O's band, The Now. Their 1979 album kills it. Even better than I imagined it would be.

What I love about Bobby O is that I keep finding new stuff by him. Of course, some of it is horrible ... but the good stuff can be amazing.

Right now, I'm on the lookout for "Street Music" by The Bang Gang.

Romeo Jones, Monday, 8 October 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

heh, i uploaded that song to my site a few days ago.

Sweet, Jaxon. I will DL that ... but I NEED the wax, breaux (need to visit your site more often too ... good stuff!).

Romeo Jones, Monday, 8 October 2007 06:00 (eighteen years ago)

that's just the instrumental though. good hunting. i found it for a buck.

another bobby o produced single i picked up recently was Tod Foster's Dancin.
http://www.discogs.com/release/210553

jaxon, Monday, 8 October 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

here's the Tod Foster track. has a bit of a bee gee's vibe when the falsetto comes in, but a really great track. really spaced out organ and nice rolling, synth bassline.
http://www.robotsinheat.com/trax/Dancin.mp3

jaxon, Monday, 8 October 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I like that Tod Foster.

2 more Bobby O favorites that haven't been mentioned yet ...

Roni Griffith -- Spys
Roni Griffith -- Voodoo Man

the first one is especially awesome. It's got that killer chug that a lot of Bobby's greatest tracks have (like "I'm So Hot For You," "Desire," "Passion" etc.). And funny, paranoid lyrics too.

Romeo Jones, Monday, 8 October 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

And it looks like you cam DL "Spys" here if you want:

http://suckmydisco.blogspot.com/

Romeo Jones, Monday, 8 October 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

I found a copy of "Street Music" a few weeks ago. Not as good as stuff from a couple years later.

naus, Monday, 8 October 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

Tod Foster's Dancin' is pretty awesome, and I've seen it in the dollar bin a few times. I also like how it's Orlando style in a more embryonic/innocent form. There's a later version of Dancin' by Joe Michael that's more standard rate hi-nrg chugging and not as good.

Also fun: when you blatantly hear which huge track Bobby was obviously trying to rip off ("Just A Gigolo" = "Private Idaho", "Love Reaction" = "Blue Monday", and numerous takes on his own "Passion")

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

One-Two-Three's "Runaway" = "Don't You Want Me"

...KILLER instrumental btw

Thanks for posting that. I never knew what Lyn Todd looked like, and that androgynous voice led me to conflicting thoughts.

Josefa, Sunday, 6 March 2016 06:11 (ten years ago)

five years pass...

Found myself down a Bobby O hole this week, after hearing both the PSB and Oh Romeo versions of "Try It (I'm in love with a Married Man)." On heavy rotation now is The Flirts' "Voulez Vous (Atlantis Codex Ultimo Remix)", which cuts down on the vocals and amps up the instrumental parts very nicely. (The fan-made video is a bit NSFW btw). Most of the instrumentation from Fancy's "Slice me nice" was lifted from "Passion" or "Desire", but I wonder if Orlando shamelessly stole back by putting the chorus riff from "Slice me Nice" in BOTH "Helpless" and "Voulez Vous." I feel he made better use of it in the end, anyhow.

I never heard "My boyfriend is a communist" by Miss Kimberly before (b-side to "DJ Girl"), but the lyrics are wonderfully daft:

"What ever happened to my Vietnam Vet?
He's become so Soviet
He's quoting Marx and Lenin too
He's so RED and now I'm so BLUE"

I feel like the trio of One Two Three singles are a bit underrated too. "Another Knife in my back" is SO mean-spirited.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 23:20 (four years ago)

One other thing: did not know there was a full length LP for Waterfront Home. It's not bad at all. "Finger On The Trigger" and "Teenage Girl In Love" are pretty nice, and it's got the original version of "Dancin' In Heaven," later done by Tony Caso as a solo artist. "Dancing In Heaven" is great musically, but aaaah! Is it really a father's lament over the premature death of his children, while simultaneously implying that he was responsible for their deaths? What the hell, man. Someone speculated on YT that the lyrics of later Tony Caso singles like "Desperate and Dangerous" act as prequels and/or sequels to the same story, which might be reading too much into things, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case.
