Is Queen's "One Vision" actually a demand for fascism?

Ok. I love this song's anthemic Queenoid nuttiness, but don't the lyrics basically sound like a demand for fascism? They want only one everything and the part where Mercury cries about "what they have done to my dream" could be him distancing fascism from Nazism.

But then the song ends with a demand for fried chicken. I don't know what to make of this. I know this song was for "Live Aid" originally or something. Is this just Queen being incoherent as usual or is there something I'm missing?

The First Commandment shall be:

Never take Queen's lyrics seriously. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Btw. Several of the tracks on the "Kind Of Magic" album are from the "Highlander" movie, and the lyrics are influenced by that movie. "Gimme The Prize" and "Princes Of The Universe" are probably even more OTT than "One Vision".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

interesting line from Queen's AMG bio:

Despite their enormous popularity, Queen were never taken seriously by rock critics — an infamous Rolling Stone review labeled their 1979 album Jazz as "fascist."

and that was BEFORE "One Vision"!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:10 (twenty-three years ago)

If you listen to Laibach's cover of it, then yes it does certainly sound like it.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I've long thought this, and so have those Slovenian totalitarian pisstakers Laibach:

To tell the truth, we never consider our work as completely musical, music is only one of our interests. We do like music as a language of expression but we don't want to limit ourselves to one single field of operation.Every form is political, you cannot say that Elton John does not have a political background. We've shown that Queen can be a very political group, we only translated 'One Vision' into German, it started to function as a political song. Some censorship doesn't do any harm - the state should close all the discotheques and shut down the concerts. Music is not a form of liberation any more, it is a very subtle system of controlling the youth, how could you consider MTV otherwise.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 24 March 2003 02:12 (twenty-three years ago)

but why did they ask for fried chicken at the end? WHY?!?!?!?!

Words and music by Freddie Mercury,Brian May,Roger
Taylor and John Deacon

(God works in mysterious ways)

One man one goal one mission
One heart one soul just one solution
One flash of light yeah one god one vision

One flesh one bone
One true religion
One voice one hope
One real decision
Wowowowo gimme one vision

No wrong no right
I'm gonna tell you there's no black and no white
No blood no stain
All we need is one world wide vision

One flesh one bone
One true religion
One race one hope
One real decision
Wowowowo oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah

I had a dream
When I was young
A dream of sweet illusion
A glimpse of hope and unity
And visions of one sweet union
But a cold wind blows
And a dark rain falls
And in my heart it shows
Look what they've done to my dreams

So give me your hands
Give me your hearts
I'm ready
There's only one direction
One world one nation
Yeah one vision

No hate no fight
Just excitation
All through the night
It's a celebration wowowowo yeah

One one one one...
One vision...

One flesh one bone
One true religion
One voice one hope
One real decision

Gimme one light
Gimme one hope
Just gimme
One man one man
One bar one night
One day hey hey
Just gimme gimme gimme gimme
Fried chicken

i saw laibach perform this song in Helsinki in 1989. i was stood next to man in full laibach miliary jacknife boots regalia saluting throughout (nazi-type salute that you see in movies).

was a scary/intense moment of my life.

i always though laibach were supposedly Tounge-in-cheek till that point, but this whole incident began to make me question their motivation.

Laibach are playing in NYC (Brooklyn I think) early November.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Saturday, 21 August 2004 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The closing seconds of the 'One Vision' video see Freddie Mercury blacked up. The 'fried chicken' line is a nod to racism.

I think they are tounge-in-cheek, but that a vast number of folks don't seem to be in on the joke.

there's a laibach installation round here with a video of Zizek saying the idea is to subvert capitalist ideology by conforming so closely to it; also part of it is a Yugoslav communist propaganda poster thats actually a Nazi poster with the relevant symbols retouched

fcussen (Burger), Saturday, 21 August 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

See also the swastika of axes on Laibach's Opus Dei... which is actually taken from an anti-nazi picture by John Heartfield (né Herzfeld).

four years pass...

According to Mercury himself, the lyrics were about Bob Geldof. So unless it was a call to get Bob Geldof as a fascist Führer, this thread is indeed quite ridiculous.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 8 January 2009 04:00 (seventeen years ago)

Geldof wasn't a fascist?

Ever since Momus called "We Are the Champions" fascist in another thread I haven't been able to hear that song without imagining Hitler belting it out from the bunker, in front of downcast troops who know defeat is coming, before Hitler drinks the poison, or whatever.

Cunga, Monday, 21 December 2009 06:59 (sixteen years ago)

Or Momus actually called it a song that would be on "hitler's iPod"

This is a remarkable song with a message relevant to any decade, century or millenia.

tiger's wood (latebloomer), Monday, 21 December 2009 07:14 (sixteen years ago)

No problem seeing the nazi imagery here, and Rammstein's version (and video) is brilliant, although I wonder how they dare, being Germans and all.

But still a bit unfair towards a lyric that was actually written in honour of Bob Geldof. I doubt Freddie Mercury wanted Bob Geldof to become a dictator (even though it probably would have been better than Reagan and Thatcher).
