c4's planet sound is keen. godspeed would probably approve besides the choruses. they have an unparalelled drive.

one year passes...
I've got their new single. I'm really stuck on the fence here. They're reaching, certainly they are reaching, and I dunno if they'll get it, but for some reason I really, really want them to. I've not heard anyone sound that angry in goodness knows how long.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really undecided too. The songs are good, but they all sound quite similar. And the singer sounds really forced. It's almost as if they're trying too hard to be underground, and cool, when they're obviously not (underground that is.. what with being signed to Sony and all).

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm the other way - the songs sound rather basic and flailing, but the singer... I can see the singer being the deciding factor for a lot of people. I like him though. They've got their power, but I'm not sure they know what to do with it.

They're live on RAdio 1 now, BTW.

And I've missed it cos my dad rang. Hmm.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

they're still on.

I think the biggest problem I have with them is that what they do is at odds with what it seems like they want to do. They're trying for some sort of accessible Godspeed type thing, but because they're on a major they have to make it for indie kids, so do it with singing etc.

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear God Zane Lowe really should not be allowed to talk to people.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the music, but the lyrics are sub-MSP (and that's saying a lot)

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And here's The Ordinary Boys, where all the stuff I like about Hope Of The States's singer becomes some of the stuff I hate about The Ordinary Boys. HOTS don't sound like the Jam, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

That's quite an unwarranted diss on The Jam. The Ordinary Boys really are Not Worth It.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Zane Lowe shouldn't be allowed to talk, or rap.

He makes Jo Whiley look like a good interviewer..

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh God, the rapping. Please do not remind me.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even know why I'm listening to this. I've said I'd only listening to Radio1 on monday evenings and for Peel, but turning the radio on at 8 has become a habit.

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

He lost me at 'John Frusciante has a new album...'

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to see HOTS last night at the Scala with an open mind and have to admit that I'm a convert. It's like Mogwai with tunes. Or the Dirty Three with singing. 'Black Dollar Bills' in particular was amazing. Of course, I was pissed so that may have had some bearing on my enjoyment of the evening, but they're the best new band I've seen in a long time - and gonna be massive, i reckon.

Shame you didn't get to see one of the support bands, who did the early bits of the tour. This group called Youthmovies Soundtrack Strategies.

They're far, far better than HOTS

jellybean (jellybean), Thursday, 27 May 2004 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, they were very good - and I was sober. More RAWK! than Mogwai I'd say. The projections were a bit cliched though.

(Xpost. Support I saw was Komakino, who I thought were badly let down by their singer.)

Anyone know what it said on his keyboard?

I'm currently 'rediscovering' HOTS' debut album, whose second half is actually pretty good, but this statement is OTM. Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies, everyone! Buy their mini-album! It's great mathy, progressive, post-whatever noise-rock! And it's better than Mogwai's last album!

better than Mogwai's last album!

Faint praise!

jimn (jimnaseum), Sunday, 11 February 2007 16:51 (nineteen years ago)

I know, I know...but for a band nobody's heard of it's a fucking good record. What I should have said is that it destroys Mogwai's last album.
