besides that, are any comparisons valid?

iron & wine write lyrics with a quill & ink

bpb writes his in lovers' blood

mark I believe you mean bpb writes his "'in' '"'lovers''"' "'"'"'blood'"'"'"

(I do dig the Iron & Wine album a lot & when he plays live he's got brass ones)

i only listened to iron and wine once while falling asleep; it struck me as nice, arrangement-wise, but a bit thin lyrically. but, again, i was drowsy. should i give it another spin?

lyrically it is just O.K. -- occasionally very quietly good. But the arrangements & melodies are to me quite a bit better than "nice" -- they get progressively more gorgeous. Really between this & the Rosie Thomas album I think Sub Pop's got something interesting going on

(i haven't heard ethe ne bpb, and i&w i've never heard at all. will I like them?)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

ethe ne = the new

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

i dunno fritz

i think both are fantastic

if i were inclined to recommend one over the other, it'd be the bpb album, but that's only because i'm currently entangled in a giant love affair with it

ps. john i don't 'get' it

I've been listening to the Iron & Wine album for a few weeks now, digging its drowsy, back-porch feel. I enjoy the way he (and I forget his name) harmonizes with himself, sounding a bit like a rustic Simon and Garfunkel. I haven't listened to much Oldham since he retired the various Palace monikers. I've come close to picking up some BPB, but there's always something else that catches my eye.

i haven't listened to any oldham in years, but when i did, that's all i listened to. if you're interested in getting any Bonnie Prince Billy, get 'I See a Darkness'. as close to perfection as the guy'll get
