Frida, of course, being Anni-Frid Lyngstad of ABBA, and "Threnody" being the Dorothy Parker poem set to music by Per Gessle (later of Roxette) for Frida's Something's Going On album.

Lilacs blossom just as sweet
Now my heart is shattered.
If I bowled it down the street,
Who's to say it mattered?
If there's one that rode away
What would I be missing?
Lips that taste of tears, they say,
Are the best for kissing.

Eyes that watch the morning star
Seem a little brighter;
Arms held out to darkness are
Usually whiter.
Shall I bar the strolling guest,
Bind my brow with willow,
When, they say, the empty breast
Is the softer pillow?

That a heart falls tinkling down,
Never think it ceases.
Every likely lad in town
Gathers up the pieces.
If there's one gone whistling by
Would I let it grieve me?
Let him wonder if I lie;
Let him half believe me.

love and loss vs. loss, love vs. war, self-pity vs. pity, begrudgingly embracing the light vs. being forced to accept the darkness

I'd suggest playing them both at once, but I suspect you're way ahead of me

I'll take being forced to accept the darkness... that's the Penderecki, right? Anyways, I'm more of a fan of "The Awakening of Jacob." Can we compare that with "Answering Machine?"

Oh my god.
I hate Abba.
Oh my god.
I HATE Gylna tider
Oh my god.
Roxette are quite annoying.

Oh my god.
Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima is fantastic music.

I dare say I'll have to vote for ol' Kryztyboy.

I haven't actually HEARD Frida's song though. But that door on my ol' mind seems to have gotten stuck again, so I'll just go with what my toes told me.

two weeks pass...
confirmed, they do indeed both sound great playing both together at once. especially if you start the penderecki about 12 seconds earlier than the frida, so that the strings quiet down at the exact moment that the first verse kicks in.

everyone wins.
