Songs predicting the end of the world?

'It's the end of the world as we know it/ And i feel fine' by REM is not quite what I'm after here (though I do feel fine). Assuming that the world is spiralling its way to Armageddon, then, what kind of tunes out will be saying 'I told you so'?

Steve Reich - "It's Gonna Rain"

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 27 March 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

from their otherwise socially irresponsible and pretty damn awful (but guiltily pleasurable) megadeth impersonation period, dr. know's "lake of fire":

"fish choking on molten dust
raining fire for a hundred months
dying sun that's dripping death
still waters caked with flesh"

yeah! that's some fuckin' apocalypse!

"5 Years," by Bowie. A great tune.

"White Coats" and "I Love the World" by New Model Army

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Brandon is right. 'Five Years' owns this thread.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

"Earth Dies Screaming" - Tom Waits. Supa-apocalyptical!

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"Home is Where the Heart Is" by the Chameleons, sort of -- it's more a feeling of dread than a direct portrayal. "Up the Down Escalator" is more direct but is more a call to arms to avert it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Pixies - "The Sad Punk"

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 27 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Matt made me think of 'Earth dies screaming' by UB40.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 27 March 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brandon and James are right. 'Five Years' owns this thread.

Randy Newman- Political Science
Iron Maiden- Two Minutes to Midnight

It seems like that Joy Division should be on a such a list, but I can't think of a song that directly is about the end of the world.

Time Zone's "World Destruction" seems quite prophetic right about now. Bambaataa & Lydon even foresaw some of the details of our demise.

Plus, that song prominently features a cowbell, if memory serves, and that's always a plus.

EC, Friday, 28 March 2003 06:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Just as the cowbell clanks along in steady repetition, so will I use the word "plus."

EC, Friday, 28 March 2003 06:45 (twenty-three years ago)
