the discussions after we presented our papers last year (I wuz on a panel with Simon Reynolds and a woman whose name escapes me: she talked about country music fan communities, really good stuff) were the best part, and the whole thing was really kind of cool. I mean, yes, there's something kinda ewww about academizing pop music, and no, you're right, people don't present papers on records that just came out last week: it takes a long time to write a paper. But people who spend lots of time thinking about music being goaded into talking about music in a moderated environment with an audience = classic fun stuff
