I'm pretty sure the Guess Who did it first, right?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

its not a contest !
Monster mmagnet should cover it.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I know it's not a contest, but I was just going from memory, so I was looking for some kind of affirmation.

butthole surfers version i like a lot. but then i like most 1980s butthole surfers records

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The Guess Who did it, then Krokus, then the Butthole Surfers, then Lenny Kravitz.

The Guess Who's is the best, of course.

has anyone heard the live GW version that Bangs talks about? i really want to get it and blast it from my window to all the dirty yankees that walk by.

It really bothered me when "American Woman" was used for a clothing commercial as a "Yay America!" song.

Same with "Fortunate Son."

Fuck, ad execs suck.

This song was a bit of cornerstone in my life.

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 28 March 2003 04:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the song mainly cos my wifes an american and I sing it at parties to annoy her ;-)
Its also a good anti-imperialist singalong.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Friday, 28 March 2003 08:57 (twenty-three years ago)

What I like about the song is it started as a broken guitar string. Randy Bachman came up with the riff while tuning.

has anyone heard the live GW version that Bangs talks about

Is that the one where he goes off on a long diatribe .. "American Hooker, American Slut ..." (That's all I remember from it...) I've got that record somewhere...

dave q, Friday, 28 March 2003 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

That version you speak of is on SLSK. Look for the longest one. has a cool beginning, too.

matt riedl (veal), Friday, 28 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

listen to the BUTTHOLE SURFERS' version - it's creepy cuckoo mentalist whilst retaining the musicality. tis on "rembrandt pussyhorse" cd / lp

bob snoom, Saturday, 29 March 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the Butts, but their cover is, if not kinda entertaining, grossly overrated.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 29 March 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

fifteen years pass...

A classic in any version

Lenny Kravitz gets my vote for the single worst cover of a great song ever. It's so, so awful.
