Their new album. It doesn't rock. It isn't waist-high in contrived faux-naivete. It features no pretend lesbians. Yet somehow it's better than just about everything that's been discussed on these damn boards for the last few weeks.

I heart the Lucksmiths. Ask yourself why you don't.

i am waiting for my copy, candle says they mailed it out on monday. the lucksmiths are like sunshine.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 28 March 2003 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

it's their best - and that's not something i'd say lightly.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 March 2003 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

the lucksmiths are weird, i like the first three records, then the middle two are pretty big duds but they have been nearly perfect since. nearly because there were a few bombs on 'why that doesn't surprise me' mostly the ones not written by marty donald. he should start singing again too.

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 28 March 2003 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooooh, new Luckies stuff! Did I miss a meeting? Details, STAT!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:45 (twenty-three years ago)

new album out in stores monday (or was it the monday just gone?). it's 4 songs by Mark and the rest by Marty (Tali must have saved all his for the Guild League album)..

it's quite subdued compared to the "Where Were We" singles but the songwriting is excellent..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:48 (twenty-three years ago)

why dont YOU tell me why I SHOULD CARE, EH EH HOW ABOUT THAT FUNNY BOY

seriously

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Rah rah, new Lucksmiths! I look forward to this. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:51 (twenty-three years ago)

to jess:

because you are missing out on PRETTY BOYS singing GREAT POP SONGS with LITERARY PUNS and suchlike

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:52 (twenty-three years ago)

but what does it SOUND LIKE, maaaan

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I miss I Ludicrous too, Jim. FAP Melbourne tonight then?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

(is it grossly obvious i'm intoxicated tonite?)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:54 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm

it sounds like the Postcard label would have if Alan Horne hadn't been such a grumpy bastard

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I ludicrous, eh? i have a song of theirs round here somewhere

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 March 2003 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I take it that this Lucksmiths album isn't seeing a US release?

marianna, Friday, 28 March 2003 09:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely the godlike Jimmy T's Matinee label will be releasing it??

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 28 March 2003 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, but I checked the Matinee website and didn't see a mention of it there (or I am blind).

marianna, Friday, 28 March 2003 09:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Matinee are indeed doing a US version, don't know why it's not on the website, and Fortuna Pop are doing one for the UK

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 March 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

you can order cheap from australia though, with shipping it's like 14 bucks

keith (keithmcl), Saturday, 29 March 2003 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

just got it today, it's marvelous. spring has officially arrived. there is on tali song, ugh, but it's actually pretty nice. it sounds smaller than the last record but a bit busier at the same time, it's wonderful.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 31 March 2003 22:44 (twenty-three years ago)

really? which song is the Tali one?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

'what you'll miss' is credited to him. guild league record is dreadful but here he has the other two to spritz up his mediocrity. he should just stick to singing, he has a lovely voice.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 31 March 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

he needs to belt it out a bit more sometimes though - the biggest difference between their records and live shows are the vocal delivery..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree, they definitely have the postcard edge live but on record they sometimes go a bit too soft like on say 'the perfect crime'.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 31 March 2003 23:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently, it'll be released in the USA courtesy of Drive-In records. ;)

marianna, Wednesday, 2 April 2003 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

ah of course. sorry about that.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 07:21 (twenty-three years ago)

indie

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 08:20 (twenty-three years ago)

biteme

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 08:37 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and i'm off to see their 10th Anniversary show tonight! (now i've said it i *definitely* have to go now).. will report back....

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 08:39 (twenty-three years ago)

How does it compare to the "Staring at the Sky" EP, guys?

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

huge step forward. i think Marty's songwriting just gets better and better.

10th anniv gig was fantastic - heaps and heaps of oldies too..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

did they play adolescent song of mindless devotion? drive-in shoudl only be worried about releasing their new rocketship material, no other distractions.

keith (keithmcl), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

or Drive 50 ferchrissakes, we recorded our song for that eighteen months ago

they didn't play that one. but at least half of the set was from Good Kind of Nervous and older..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

did they pull out any of the ska numbers?
this is the best lucksmiths album that isn't a compilation.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 3 April 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

no ska. although i did realise last night that Marty re-uses the same chords almost as much as Dean Wareham. It's impressive that one doesn't tend to notice...

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 3 April 2003 00:28 (twenty-three years ago)

i asked them about the ska past and they tried to whitewash it but it was kansas and we were in bob dole's hometown and the waitress was thrilled to meet aliens from australia.

keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 3 April 2003 00:46 (twenty-three years ago)

there is a little kaye woodward in the guitar.
