OPO/POO: Gene Loves Jezebel

Yeah, that's right, Gene Loves Jezebel! Quasi-lamentable flamboyant goths with that slightly disquieting twin gimmick. Gotta problem with that?

I'm tempted to say "Desire," but their finest hour for me was the b-side to the "Sweetest Thing" 12" called "Psycho II" which completely rocks the paint off the walls.

Yerz?

hm, tough one...

I'd say "Always a Flame" at this point. But i also love "Influenza (Relapse)"

matthew omalley, Friday, 28 March 2003 03:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex, I'm in almost total agreement as long as we specify the original "Desire" and that the A and B sides on "Sweetest Thing" are almost equally rad.

YES, Spencer....the second, "Americanized" version (rife with unneccessary "Come'ingeddit"s) of "Desire" caused me a lotta bit of heartache.

"Cow" I've always had a fondness for, but it has to be something from Promise for me. "Screaming for Emmalene/Scheming" or "Psychological Problems" normally, but "Bread From Heaven" is still the one above all else.

six years pass...

I am the only person on Planet Earth still wondering if "Stephen" is a queer love song. Sure seems like it.

Oh, and are there other goth bands that sound as much like Led Zeppelin as these dudes do on "The Rhino Plasty"?

I do have a soft spot for this ridiculous band.

Not as good as the Bolshoi though tbh.

I can't believe my answer for this is starting to morph from "Desire" to "Heartache"

Soon to be seen in London opening up for The Mission and Fields Of The Neff! Not to be seen by me, I hasten to add.

Two Genes Loving Jezebel: 1997–present

After the Pre-Raphaelite Brothers tour, Jay Aston refused to work with his brother unless Stevenson and Rizzo were brought back. Michael Aston agreed, and the album VII was recorded in England. A reunion tour was undertaken in the U.S. during which a rift developed between the brothers. Michael Aston, who missed the final dates of the tour, launched his own band, also called Gene Loves Jezebel, with musicians from the Pre-Raphaelite tour. His vocals were removed from the VII album, which was released without any contribution from him. Later, the full album with Michael's vocals included was released as The Doghouse Sessions. In October 1997, Jay Aston, Rizzo, and Stevenson sued Michael Aston over rights to the name Gene Loves Jezebel and, after a protracted court battle, eventually dropped the lawsuit.

Michael Aston leads the US version of the band and has toured both the US and the UK, supporting releases such as Love Lies Bleeding (1999), Giving Up the Ghost (2001) and Exploding Girls (2003).[7] Jay Aston leads the UK version of the band, also featuring James Stevenson and Pete Rizzo, and has toured both the US and the UK extensively as well to support releases such as Accept No Substitute (2002), The Thornfield Sessions (2003), The Anthology, Vols. 1-2 (2006) and Dance Underwater (2017) and Love Death Sorrow (2023)

On 15 February 2008, a lawsuit was filed by Michael Aston in California's Central District Court, against "Chris Bell, James Stevenson, Jay Aston, John Aston, Libertalia Entertainment and others" for trademark infringement.[8] In a posting on their Myspace page on 25 September 2009, Jay Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel announced that an agreement had been reached with Michael Aston regarding the use of the name Gene Loves Jezebel: Jay Aston's band is now known as "Gene Loves Jezebel" in the UK and "Jay Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel" within the US; Michael Aston's band is now known as "Gene Loves Jezebel" in the US and "Michael Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel" in the UK. The settlement agreement was posted on Michael Aston's Gene Loves Jezebel website.[9]

tl/dr: There are currently two Gene Loves Jezebels!

A truly bizarre and tortured situation. And for so little returns!

Daryl Hall owns this sort of faux-rustic restaurant / live music venue about an hour and a half north of NYC. I was unaware of it until recently when I saw a listing for the Dandy Warhols playing there. The entertainment is almost exclusively tribute (Peter Frampton, James Brown, The Cars, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison lined up for the next couple of weeks) and roots rock bands, with the very occasional baffling exception like the Dandys, Midge Ure, XTC drummer Terry Chambers, and…Jay Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel.

(After the DW show I was in the shuttle van to the restaurant’s “other parking lot” [which turned out to be a Hannaford Supermarket parking lot 1/4 mile down the road] when I overheard someone say “I thought tonight was supposed to be the REO Speedwagon tribute, but those guys were pretty good.”)
