from the early discopunk of "Wheel me out" on Ze to Don's production of *the big names* is a pretty strange trip.
Were they just sub zappa infantiles, or something more?

their cover of Papa Was A Rolling Stone is very good, apart from the rap break.

Sweet Pea Atkinson is the most underrated vocalist of the last 20 years.

Super-duper good and very, very funny--"Shadow and Jimmy," "Out Come the Freaks"...

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

First album is, as Paul Morley so rightly said in his NME review of the time, pop's "Escalator Over The Hill."

Yes, alright, alright, I'll write something about it for Church of Me...

(didn't think much of the other ones though, Torme singing "Zaz Turned Blue" on the second album excepted)

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 29 March 2003 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i've been listening to them all weekend. i couldn't be bothered with the dumb stuff (walk the dinisaur etc) but i think i'm a fan. Elvis' Rolls Royce, Anything can happen, Zaz, Professor Night, Return to the Valley...great tunes, stupidly touching lyrics...

man o man.
one of the first bands i saw when i left home and got to the big city of leeds was the full revue style version of was (not was) during their big budget pop era with sweet pea atkinson holding centre court throughout.
such a brilliant pop/soul show, the likes of which i have never experienced since.
r.i.p.

Aw, shit, RIP. A sublime singer, for sure. No mentions here of Forever's a Long Long Time, the Orquestra Was record of Sweet Pea singing Hank Williams lyrics over jazz backing? Seems like a mix that shouldn't work, but it's really nice stuff.
