Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Free. I'm afraid that people nowadays don't give their albums a chance cuz they just think "cock rock" or whatever. Never knowing that they made some of the most beautiful music to be heard.

Scott Seward, Friday, 28 March 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Pumpkin beer is kinda tasty.

Scott Seward, Friday, 28 March 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm sure there was a more recent/active purchases thread, but i'm fucked if i can find it.

anyway: for just under £100, i just picked up the following haul from a DVD shop that's closing down in town. while i hate to see the fruits of someone's endeavour fucked by market forces, i have to say i'm quite pleased with this.

my bank manager won't be, but he can spin.

hill street blues: the complete season one
spinal tap (double-disc pack)
the breakfast club/sixteen candles/weird science (triple pack)
requiem for a dream
the very best of the human league (which i'm watching as i type)
blue velvet (in a velvet box)

dallas: the complete first and second seasons
and, perhaps most magnificently of all: alexei sayle's stuff - season one

god, the human league rock my world.

Yesterday:

Balam Acab - Wander/Wonder
Really nice. I think this guy was originally classed as Witch House, but this is nothing like it. More like ambient house without the beats. Really gorgeous

Instra:Mental
Only scraping the surface here so far. Kind of dark but bouncy. Some of it reminds me of early Aphex Twin actually.

14Tracks.com - V/A High Tech Rollers
Soem good stuff on here. Only just discovered 14tracks - does anyone subscribe to these ona regular basis?

Chrissy Murderbot - Women's Studies
I'd never have checked it out normally, because of the name. Same as Kissy Sellout - still don't know the music, but hate the name. This is fun though! Better than Major Lazer or whatevs.

It was a Thursday night. I was working late... (dog latin), Thursday, 1 September 2011 15:18 (fourteen years ago)

I need to check out Chrissy Murderbot... I've been on a tear lately:

DJ Diamond: Flight Musik (loving it, exhilarating)
Virgo Four: s/t (holy motherfucking shit this is so brilliant)
Balam Acab: Wander/Wonder (pretty, not fully in love but this is nice)
Donato Dozzy: K (very lovely and tenderly produced minimal techno/downtempo-y stuff, really satisfying)
Gene Hunt Presents Chicago Dance Trax Vol. 1 (sick)
Tom Trago: Iris (one of my favorite records to come out this year; beautifully produced, creative, far-reaching, highly melodic, incredible house album)
Juju and Jordash: s/t (I'd never heard of these guys; the super nice dude at my local dance shop recommended it; incorporates live instrumentation, some really cool drum programming, loving the feel of this)
Tevo Howard: Pandora's Box (very good, slightly clinical)

Clarke B., Thursday, 1 September 2011 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

yesterday:

I wish I could somehow keep up with dance music better. There's just SO MUCH interesting and/or great stuff coming out all the time, it feels exhausting just keeping up with the genres I actually know about, let alone weird shit like future moomstep or whatevs. This is where I lament once more working in a job that disallows listening to music and living in a terraced house

The Balam Acab I think is going to be a nice one for chilling, although his best work is ahead of him. Still, it's quite lovely.

I just spent $40 on the new Lamb album

I thought my "gah must buy overpriced import" days were over, but I'd just gotten paid

Don't know what happened with this sentence, but you get the idea. Basically, I want a big old soundproofed basement below my house rigged up with a big-arsed soundsystem, and plenty of time to go down there and freak the fuck out on bass frequencies..

2 CDs from the charity shop this morning. Chaser's Game On on Soma from 1998. Nice jazzy house stylings and Bustin' Out: New Wave To New Beat: The Post Punk Era 1979 - 1981 comp - I have most of these already though. £2 each.

Melechesh

I haven't heard of this band in years. Last thing I got by them was the one with the massive winged horse on the front. Byzantine death metal, right? I don't remember thinking it was too different from other bands at the time, and thinking Nile did a similar trick a bit better, but I'd be curious to hear how they've come along.

Dog Latin, I feel you on the impossibility of keeping up with dance music. I just kind of buy things here and there, follow trails of certain labels, artists, scenes, take recommendations from people who know my tastes and who I trust, etc. I don't really know what I'm doing, and I don't care about being comprehensive; I'm also happy to catch stuff a few years late... There's always time. I'm also lucky enough to work from home (well, I sell wine for a living, but July and August are slooooow so I'm home quite often rather than showing stuff around), so I get lots of time to digest new stuff, and during hours when my neighbors aren't around (thus BASS).

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain (some great individual tracks, though overall seems a bit uneven - I think I prefer Cosmic Slop)

Balam Acab - Wander/Wonder
Really nice. I think this guy was originally classed as Witch House, but this is nothing like it. More like ambient house without the beats. Really gorgeous

really? there are big clunky 808 rap beats on almost every tune. i do like it though, the vocal samples are great and the songs are structured pretty meticulously.

Dog Latin: A lot of people say this about Melechesh so maybe they're right but I don't see the Nile comparison too much myself. While I don't usually go in for the virtuoso end of death metal, I just love those Middle Eastern riffs. I think a better comparison is some really early Mastodon. Some of the more 'Arabic' influence numbers off Lifesblood and Remission. My favourite album by them remains Emissaries.

Van Morrison - Common One (RIYL Veedon Fleece, In A Silent Way, or even Destroyer's Kaputt)
Bobby Hutcherson - Head On (early '70s big-band free-bop fusion, w/ most tracks written by then-19-y.o. Todd Cochran; epic bonus tracks)
Bennie Maupin - Jewel In The Lotus (Mwandishi alumni play ECM chamber-jazz)
Joe Henderson - Inner Urge (a Joe supreme, a Joe supreme)
Wes Montgomery - So Much Guitar!!! (Ray Barretto on congas!!!)
