MTV makes Kelly Osbourne 'sick'

Kelly Osbourne has launched an attack on MTV after the music channel reportedly refused to play the video for her new song Come Dig Me Out.

The star of MTV's most popular ever show The Osbournes complained that the US channel only plays a limited number of music videos a week.

And she claimed that MTV only cares about commercially successful acts.

Kelly told Antimusic.com: "MTV makes me sick to my stomach, when you're hot, you're hot. When you're not, you're not. MTV only play 35 videos a week, they used to be all about breaking new artists.

"Now, if you're not in a rap group, if you're not talking about "I f****** the cutest girl in school" or if you're not singing about skateboarding, you can't get played."

Kelly's album Shut Up has sold only 134,000 copies in the US since its release in November last year.

She added that she believes she may never be accepted as a credible musical artist.

She said: "I honestly don't care if I sell any albums. People don't see me as an artist, they see me as a television star. And I don't care. I don't care if people take me seriously as an artist."

Kelly Osbournes ugly mug of a face makes me sick. And so does MTV.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

since when is ilm about hating on people's ugly mugs? you suck.

Yes, yes I do. I do like her dad though.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Kelly's album Shut Up has sold only 134,000 copies

"only." jesus. maybe she'll come to her senses after this and start fronting an all-girl sabbath tribute band.

I never thought chicks as ugly as Kelly Osbourne actually existed until I saw her fat ass on my TV set doing bad Madonna cover versions. Ozzy is a twat too.

this is the most depressing thread ever.

I never thought dumb guys like Calum existed until I went to high school

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

She is actually completely right when it comes to here general MTV critique. Pity this may be seen as bitching about lack of coverage for her own (pathetic) solo career though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"I hasten to add it's more likely to be the 34 jam doughnuts she crams in her gob every day that's making her feel queasy..."

looks like the calum virus is spreading. im switching my computer off now!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I jkust posted the article cause I thought it raised some interesting questions about "biting the hand that feeds you"; how MTV championed her thereby making her charge that MTV doesn't play anything interesting a little bit self-defeating; and whether or not when you're hot, you're hot. When you're not, you're not ... they used to be all about breaking new artists is a paradox - eg isn't dropping what's not hot part of breaking new artists? and then there's her conclusion "I honestly don't care if I sell any albums. People don't see me as an artist, they see me as a television star. And I don't care. I don't care if people take me seriously as an artist." which is either totally fucking ballsy or totally fucking spoilt. or both.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

yep. she wouldn't have EVEN sold 134,000 without an initial leg-up from MTV. and i don't see why her treatment from MTV makes her sick to her stomach if she doesn't care about selling records.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

russ' high-minded put-downs of calum on other threads ring hollow when put next to his above remark.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

All those damn carbohydrates.....

maria b (maria b), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

kelly doesn't care if she doesnt sell any records - why is she making the music she's making then? stop wasting our time and make something dark girlfriend

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the most pathetic thread on ilm, though it's not Fritz's fault.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

she's right about MTV, but its partly her fault (with the success of The Osbournes prompting MTV to focus even more on 'entertainment programming' rather than music videos) that things are that way

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevem why would something dark be better? Kelly's music is good.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i liked her cover of "papa don't preach". i think tom's right - it's not about the TYPE of music she makes. but i think she is just sulking because MTV has stopped helping her out. would she be speaking out about them if it was someone else being spurned by them, not her?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah her comments on MTV are dumb but her comments on almost anything are dumb as far as I can tell, but her comments aren't the point of her.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

her comments aren't the point of her!?! her comments on the show are hilarious.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

she's funny because she comes from a perspective of complete entitlement, but she's also kind and goofy, and also just an embarassed awkward teenager. everything she says is mixed up and conflicted and cool.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 28 March 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

round things don't have 'points'

qalum, Friday, 28 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Stevem why would something dark be better? Kelly's music is good.

i don't think it is good, but then i've only heard the 2 singles which don't strike me as anything special at all - 'Papa Don't Preach' was cute for all of the 3 minutes you hear it the first time. i think 'Shut Up' is just useless but then I haven't got any time for Avril either - even if you think they're on different levels (obv. Kelly is WAY cooler but Avril is actually more talented)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

her comments aren't the point of her!?!

they are the ONLY point as far as i can see - what is there in the music that isnt being done better by...The Donnas even?!

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

my stance is probably thus:

1. i think her comments ARE the point of her. her brash personality makes her music more interesting
2. i think her comments on MTV are just childish petulance - sour grapes because her album's bombed.
3. BUT she is entitled to be teenager-y as she is, after all, a teenager. and her childish petulance is fun, even if i don't agree with what she's saying.
4. slagging a teenage girl for being ugly or slightly overweight is childish, even if she is a celeb who is never gonna read your comments.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

does she even WANT to be a pop star? i get the impression its all just 'well the opportunity is there so, whatever' most of the time - i know thats part of the act but still...

and all these endorsements - do they need the money?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard the Donnas but "Shut Up!" is great because it's fast noisy guitar pop which unlike even Avril really doesn't care about whether it's 'punk' or 'alternative' or not. Since that concern is what amputates the fun glands of 99.9% of bands its absence is cause for celebration in my book.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

(obv. Kelly is WAY cooler but Avril is actually more talented)

Oh for christ's sake I'm one of the resident popmavens and eve I think that's a bit absurd.

And dave, not to take this thread any lower but some of the best round things in the world have points.

[also, disillusionment != dumb but rather an overcoming of dumb -- haha it sublates it!]

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Fritz, to quote the 'lady' - Shut Up. Thank you.

Kilian - high-minded? I like it. You may carry on.

russ t, Friday, 28 March 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

slagging a teenage girl for being ugly or slightly overweight is childish
Especially when she's not. God is some adolescents feel this way, I can't imagine what they think of about 80-90% of all of the other teenage girls out there. No wonder so many of them are sticking their fingers down their throats.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, but he's only err... joking.
Ho ho ho.

care to reconcile this with your above post, or will you tell me to "shut up" too?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Fritz is OTM.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 28 March 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

it's fast noisy guitar pop

that it is, and nowt wrong with that really, but it seems a bit too contrived to me, i mean i can see Avril singing it too. its not quite like Andrew WK who is a genuine certified mentalist who clearly loves what he does. i'm not convinced Kelly really shares that love. does it matter? perhaps not.

(obv. Kelly is WAY cooler but Avril is actually more talented)
Oh for christ's sake I'm one of the resident popmavens and eve I think that's a bit absurd.

i'm pretty sure Avril has a stronger singing voice, esp. live - i know that doesnt mean shit really but on talent terms...Kelly destroys Avril in the talent for wardrobe supremacy of course

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 17:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Kelly could probably write a better song than Avril tho (not heard that one to her mum tho, and don't want to frankly)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

kilian - whilst your faithful trawling through my ancient posts fills me with deep joy, and makes me feel not a little uneasy - please.

If you can't tell the difference between Calum and myself and the way we write and think - well, you're as stupid as you sound.

russ t, Friday, 28 March 2003 17:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril is great. Kelly is great, Shut Up is brilliant.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 March 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"I hasten to add it's more likely to be the 34 jam doughnuts she crams in her gob every day that's making her feel queasy..."

i must be stupid russ, because i'm not seeing too big a difference between this and one of calum's posts. he slags alison moyet and geri because they're fat. you object and call him childish. i agree, you were right. but why then slag off a teenage girl for being (slightly) overweight? would you like to, oh i don't know, come up with an argument that disproves my point, or continue dodging the issue?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 28 March 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

she's right about MTV, but its partly her fault (with the success of The Osbournes prompting MTV to focus even more on 'entertainment programming' rather than music videos) that things are that way

Well, The Osbournes weren't exactly the first of those series. I guess "Beavis And Butthead" and "Jackass" are to blame, first and foremost.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, "Remote Control" anyone?

Based on hearing them live on awards shows (Avril doing "Sk8er Boi", Kelly doing "Papa Don't Preach"), Kelly is the stronger singer.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

was Kelly fully live at the MTV Awards Shows? it sounded surprisingly alright to be honest - my assessment of Avril live is based more on her performance on CD:UK

stevem (blueski), Friday, 28 March 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it fair to say that Kilian doesn't laugh at fat jokes? I think that's a shame, cos then she'll never see the humour in Spinal Taps song 'Big Bottom' which is cool. It could've been written for Kelly Osbourne in fact:

"The bigger the waistband the deeper the quicksand"

Heh, heh - loads of humour evolves around this. Cartman, 'Shallow Hal' - I don't see how this has become soooo PC that you can't pass comment on someone for sweating rivers after running up a few flights of stairs.

If it feels like I'm passing comment on you Kilian then, hey, why not get out and excercise instead of sitting in your house on the net all day? The road to health begins and ends with you.

Calum, Friday, 28 March 2003 19:39 (twenty-three years ago)

MTV should be playing Come Dig Me Out because it is excellent - better than her previous singles, better than the similarly titled Sleater-Kinney song, even better than Sk8er Boi. Kelly's screaming/singing carries it and it sounds far more authentic to my ears than anything The Donnas have done along the same lines of late. One of my favorite singles so far this year. MTV is dumb.

Miranda (Miranda), Friday, 28 March 2003 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

surely the humour of the spinal tap joke is more to do with the (perceived) attitudes of metallers/metal fans? not that spinal tap was or will ever be funny

thom west (thom w), Friday, 28 March 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Kelly Osbourne is a fun novelty artist who got one record cause she had a show. Maybe she'll get a second due to the success of the first, but it will be totally ignored, and she'll move on. It's happened a million times.

Avril is the worst human being on Earth, ever.
