no

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

just kidding. not all the time, tbh. there are some tracks where the bass line is what makes it great ("Pulsewidth" by Aphex Twin for example), but i wouldn't agree with this as a blanket statement. i don 't focus on the bass lines in lots of my favourite songs.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

by "pulsewidth" i meant "tha". silly me.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm. Its just that everytime a track catches my attention it seems to have a great bass thing going on. Obviously its v. subjective ;-).
I'm thinking of say, marlena shaws "woman of the ghetto".
Kilian, yeah, its a blanket statement, but its up to you to prove me wrong, give me an example of a killer song without a good base line.

noel gallagher strongly disagrees...

Taking Sides; Songs vs Music (and maybe 'Tunes' too)

"Just Like Heaven"

well if Noel says so...

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

all of pavement's slanted and enchanted album, because there is no bass on it at all. but you're right, it is just a case of subjective vs objective. it's just not something i personally would focus on (not all the time, anyway).

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

White Stripes to thread!

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm never noticed that on Pavement. V. Interesting.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Just like Heaven ? Its ALL Bass !!

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

"White Stripes to thread!"

Were supposed to come up with examples of GOOD music without bass, Ally ;-)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Kilian, no bass guitar on Pavements slanted and enchanted ? I beg to differ.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe there's some on one or two tracks, but its barely audible. why do you beg to differ?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, because I haven't said that in ages.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh please. Plenty of excellent music does not feature a bassline.

C'mon. Work a little harder.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The bassline means nothing at all. The difference between a good song and a great song is the bridge and the middle-8

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

and because I do . Imagine Pavenments Stereo without a bass guitar ?

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

geir, if i knew what you meant maybe I could disagree...but i don't. anyway my statement is WAY cathier than yours !-)

kevin brady (groeuvre), Saturday, 29 March 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

geir, how do you pronounce your name ? Does it rhyme with fire ?
