Well, it had to be asked: DLR, Hagar the Horrible or Eddie Van Heffelin? Who should we shoot first?

Who was the biggest asshole of the three.
My op-ed:
Eddie looks innocent on the surface, and I'm sure back in the late 80s, everyone *THOUGHT* he was the "victim" of David Lee Rot's ego. But Eddie's equally brusque (he wasn't fired, he quit...) treatment he meted out to Hagar (and Cherone and Cherone's replacement...) makes the accusations of EVH's autocratic behaviour sound a lot more plausable. (Is it any wonder they can't seem to find a new frontman?)

(I just finished the Konows "Bang Your Head" book and wanted to get everyones opinion on the DLR/Hagar/Heffelin three way hatefest hard-on.)

Eddie's a bit of a jackass, yes it's true, but he can at least shut up and still make great music with his guitar. DLR, however, is a slowly eroding shadow of his former self, devolving from greek god to borscht belt lounge act. Euthanize him now.

can we send some kind of robot back in time to kill them all before hagar even joins the band?

REESE: Listen. Understand. That
Terminator is out there. It
can't be reasoned with, it can't
be bargained with...it doesn't
feel pity of remorse or fear...
and it absolutely will not stop.
Ever. Until you are dead.

Ed went stern when he sobered up. but still, he wrote the tunes and dlr made a pretty penny off same tunes (all vh "covers" plus yankee rose in his setlists on the hagar/dlr summer tour last year).

Dlr could never sing nor write a tune (well, skyscraper is pretty good). he was the circus sideshow when the gettin' was good.

Ed should be commended for not buying into the rich reunion tour idea like kiss, like page&plant, like the eagles, like etc.

I guess this doesn't answer the question. Death to DLR.

That said, He'd make a wonderful late nite talk show host.

a, Sunday, 30 March 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

VH had a couple good singles but on the whole I think they're kind of annoying.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 30 March 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

People in the know seem to think VH will ask Hagar to return to the fold before the end of the year. It's not my dream, but I'll take it.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 30 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i always find it strange that bands like ac/dc and aerosmith are so revered in certain circles yet van halen is viewed as some joke. i think vh smalls the above two, kiss, motley crue and all these bands that somehow have gotten "respect" lately.

a, Sunday, 30 March 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i always find it strange that bands like ac/dc and aerosmith are so revered in certain circles yet van halen is viewed as some joke.

I agree partially. Steven Tyler is the walking definition of an embarassing lead singer, and Aerosmith have been nothing more than a self-parody act since 1989. AC/DC, on the other hand, just do what they do, and really don't give a flip what you or anyone thinks.

Point is, though, that Van Halen's career has been split into so many segments, their fanbase has been fractured into DLR sects, Hagar sects, and (possibly?) Cherone-era sects. That they've been sitting idle since 1998 and letting rumors swirl around their continued existence probably doesn't help their case. An outsider could easily view VH worship as a lost cause and perfect fodder for jokes. Roth's continual public shenanigans don't help matters.

To gain the respect they deserve, they're going to have to get in the studio again and record something with somebody. At this point, the most likely candidate would be Hagar, and I can live with that.

paul cox (paul cox), Sunday, 30 March 2003 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

The idea of a "Cherone-era sect" is pretty amusing. I'm a DLR man all the way, though songs like "Finish What You Started" make me realize that if they actually named themselves Van Hagar (we call them that anyway!) their much less offensive than, say, Night Ranger.

I wouldn't want to shoot any of them. The last thing boorish old Parrothead/"mas tequila" drunk dads need is to be put in fear for their lives.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 30 March 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

that single from the cherone period, the vocals sucked but there was some pretty fucked up discordant stuff in the middle.

i'm just saying, is all.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

"Finish What Ya Started" is the most pathetic song ever.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Subthread: Gary Cherone-era Van Halen vs Ray Wilson-era Genesis? FITE!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 31 March 2003 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

DLR is/was a total asshole. That's why he was a great frontman. But it's time for him to go away.

Van Halen takes himself too seriously. He should give up on the Van Halen thing & team up with Les Claypool in a free-jazz experiment. (Hope you like our new direction.)

Hagar is an innocent bystander.

AC/DC is the only metal band to never do a ballad. We salute you.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 31 March 2003 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

AC/DC is the only metal band to never do a ballad. We salute you.

One could argue, however, that AC/DC were never a "metal band." Discuss....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

One could more reasonably argue that AC/DC was the only metal band.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

One could simply say AC/DC were purely a rock'n'roll band, laregly and blissfully free of many of the more damning cliches that plague the genre of Heavy Metal. One could further argue that they are, in fact, a genre unto themselves.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I'll explain it one...more...time...
AC/DC == "Hard Rock"
Megadeth == "Metal"
Bon Jovi == "Soda Pop"

Everything else is either just "reggae", "rap", "funk" or "jazz"
All other "genres" are a figment of your diseased imagination.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

What was Nazareth?

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

reggae

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"Let Me Put My Love Into You" and "Ride On" are ballads kinda, aren't they? Maybe "Crabsody in Blue" too

dave q, Monday, 31 March 2003 18:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I just can't believe all the DLR-hate going on here! Unreal. He was the only smart and funny one in the band - without him, they're just boring MOR hair-rock. To say he can't sing is fucking ridiculous - all his squeals and growls and weird vocalisms are what made VH interesting to begin with (well, that and Eddie showing off).

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 31 March 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

without him, they're just boring MOR hair-rock
I'm sorry, Shakey...but I keep seeing this sentence start with the clause "without him", and that doesn't mesh well with the second half of the sentence, which applies to the entire history of Van Halen. I'm pretty damn sure that even the Roth-era VH had more than its fair share of spandex.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't have a problem with spandex or hair-rock, I have a problem with the band being humorless and boring - which is what they turned into when DLR left (and took all the good ideas with him).

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 31 March 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"poundcake" and "runaround" off of f.u.c.k. weren't bad. and I still stand by "Finish What You Started." "Right Now" has its moments, some very Crystal Pepsi moments.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

(and took all the good ideas with him)
Huh?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Great Sammy-era tunes:

Summer Nights
5150 (classic -- he played it live last summer, too)
Why Can't This Be Love
Finish What Ya Started
Feels So Good
Cabo Wabo
Poundcake
Right Now
Judgement Day
Amsterdam
Humans Being

a, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 10:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Shoot Sammy; there was a lot of good tracks on those first 5 albums. And don't forget, VH were first and foremost an LA band, so DLR was actually the ideal frontman when it really mattered.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How could you hate Diamond Dave?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

"(and took all the good ideas with him)
Huh? "

let's see: the videos, the self-mythologozing, glamrock covers of the Kinks (twice!), blues goofs ("Ice Cream Man"!), funny lyrics, over-the-top tour antics (parachuting onto the stage, etc.), taking the piss out of Eddie's guitar solos, campy sexuality, the smoking baby on the cover of 1984, on and on...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

man...david lee roth was a titanic asshole, a gigantic, rhinestone-studded flaming screeching king hell asshole, there is no doubt, but van halen's existence would've been abso-goddamn-lutely POINTLESS without his tenure in the band. sammy hagar? the guy was in fucking montrose? who remembers them?

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

montrose who?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Get on your bad motor scooter and ride !

Rock candy baby, hard sweet and sticky!

These songs do rock.

can someone tell me what a three lock box is? I didn't quite pick it up from VH1 classic yet.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 2 April 2003 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fret not anthony, sammy is just too clever sometimes.

here's a puzzle: one shot! hey! mas tequila!

still scratching my head over that one.

in seriousness though, sammy rocks.

akm, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

new linking method, I do not understand you

akm, Wednesday, 7 March 2007 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Go ahead shoot Hagar. He has never ever contributed anything, and he is just a rather archetypical heavy rock frontman, as opposed to the complete original that is David Lee Roth.
