This compulsive listmaking is a POX on this board

Maybe we should do an I Love Lists board. But come on, it's like 50 new threads a day of lists. In another month someone's going to realize you can do PO50 and it'll start all over again.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

agreed. ILM is pretty crappy at the moment as a result (and believe me i hate myself for contributing to these threads)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

we need more charticles

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

it comes and it goes though, doesnt it? we had a period like this before. and me too jim

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure they take away from the analytical side of things, but they are fun and help me understand better what I like and (to a lesser extent) why I like it.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just debating Anthony M. earlier about this very topic. The lists are distracting and draining. Yeah you can ignore but I would rather filter them out. Pretty soon it'll be OP7, OP13, OP4. It could go on forever. Arrrggggg.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:56 (twenty-three years ago)

This is what I think about the lists though. I mean, I'm guilty of just posting lists too but I think that they don't HAVE to be just threads of lists. Why doesn't anyone bring up discussion about the lists? Or the artist in general? It seems like a good excuse to do it.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

think "outside the box" people

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

uh-huh. this poxy POXing is no different to top tensing. why has it been such a 'success'?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 31 March 2003 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

the snappy acronym

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you are correct.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

thank you for that, jess.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not so bad. But Ally is absolutely right, it's so much better when it evolves into a discussion. Not that I've contributed much, though. I'm gonna make more of an effort next time.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

your list is shit/inaccurate, here is my list.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

That's not really a discussion. I'm trying to think of an example thread but the only one coming to mind is the Blur one which wasn't an example of a discussion at all, it was me and Alex comedy shouting at each other and posting ludicrious pictures.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i
like
the
lists
the
POX
says
more
about
a
person's
tastes
than
the
OPO

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody is OTM there too. Picking one says very little about what a person likes.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:31 (twenty-three years ago)

but back to your being OTM: there's no point in displaying a taste if there is no discussion resulting.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

A pox on POO. I poo on POX.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

hop on pop

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

(see? serious discussion!)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i hate POX and POO and all other nasty sounding names that result in lists lists lists and no talking. stop the madness before the only communication going on becomes an exchange of copyright info and liner notes.

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 31 March 2003 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

c. 1987 Island Records, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Printed In The USA.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

"corny case logic motherfuckers"

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:18 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, Rosen went for Joshua Tree, kneejerk response

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:48 (twenty-three years ago)

that wasn't joshua tree

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i grabbed the first cd i saw -- the lounge lizards' no pain for cakes (island/antilles, 1987)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

right, sure, everybody knows you crank "one tree hill" round the clock

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I can hear it all the way in Manhattan!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:54 (twenty-three years ago)

she runs like a rosen to the sea

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

For future reference - PO50 = POL. Or PLO.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

PLOELO

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:22 (twenty-three years ago)

i always knew that yasir arafat's real goal was to be the fifth beatle! did you really think it's accidental that he looks so much like ringo?

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

So, no one has mentioned that the originator of the POX phenomenon is ... Geir!!! He hath left his mark.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

(I agree w/ JBR; they are at least more interesting than POO)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:03 (twenty-three years ago)

you know what would be even more interesting? 'P0100'! let's raise the stakes here ppl!!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:14 (twenty-three years ago)

hey, we already did our hundred best albums and singles!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm for that one! [ignores dirty looks from the assembled]

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:47 (twenty-three years ago)

thye don't say more abt a person. how does that work?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:51 (twenty-three years ago)

isn't ONLY PICK TEN kind of a dumb idea. I mean come on! Restrain yourselves into ONLY PICKING TEN, most bands don't even have 3 good songs let alone fucking TEN. Also wasn't the idea of only pick one that you got an interesting piece of information or description about the song? Am I a traditionalist here or something? If you want a general discussion then do a general discussion thread but all this OPP on ILM is giving me a headache.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i've set up two opx threads and i feel bad now, because they're really getting out of hand. i don't think they're a bad idea, it's just that there have been so many, so fast that its a bit overbearing. having everyone picking their 10 fave tracks by a given artist would have been interesting and fun, but only if these threads had been spread out over a few weeks. its a shame that a fun thread idea has burnt out, tbh. i promise i will post NO MORE opx's till this madness dies down.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 31 March 2003 09:27 (twenty-three years ago)

no no killian keep doing it. I always wanted to see how much punishment this server could take.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 31 March 2003 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

no one has POXed a band i really like yet though.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 31 March 2003 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

At a pinch I could POX Iron Maiden, Poison or the Manics.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 31 March 2003 09:34 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, I just noticed POX Smashing Pumpkins, I like them.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 31 March 2003 09:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe the bands you like, Ronan (wink etc). Also like most ILX "dilemmas" this'll prob be over in a week...

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 31 March 2003 09:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't put words in my mouth, chicken!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

ok that chicken thing is totally killing me.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Kilian is otm. It's not a bad idea, just overkill. There were only a couple of these on Friday and I was thinking of starting one myself this morning before I saw New Answers. So you've been spared PO10 country music.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

can we do a kind of catharsis by having ONLY PICK EVERY SINGLE RECORD YOU HAVE EVER ENJOYED

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

there's no harm in it really
i haven't been arsed posting to many of them, but they would be handy for looking into music by people i don't really know,to get an idea of what tracks are considered good,so i know what to download...

robin (robin), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

[snip yet another brilliant picture of ron mcdonald from blount]

WHERE DOES HE GET THOSE WONDERFUL TOYS??
