James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

None, it has done been too many times, and the results always suck (with the possible exception of "Blue Monday").

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 31 March 2003 04:59 (twenty-three years ago)

blount stole mine!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really have an answer to this, except to say that in theory if Interpol follow the path of 500 of the 600 bands they sound like, they'll have a big synthy dance smash by 2006.

What's keeping me from thinking properly about this is the confusion between imagining rock bands playing dance music with guitars and such (like the DFA direction) and rock bands actually using dance tools (which tends not to be as good, and is silly anyway -- it's not as if there's some massive glut of danceable guitar bands out there).

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

are you guys gonna behave or do we have to start defining 'rock'?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

(Actually I can't decide if an Interpol dance single would sound like mid-period Cure or the Sisters of Mercy or A Flock of Seagulls or just a more depressed version of "Hard to Explain" -- I think not knowing is why I'd be interested to hear it.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Les Savy Fav, who come close enough anyway

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

they always fuck it up tho

(this is not a criticism)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:14 (twenty-three years ago)

a more depressed version of "Hard to Explain"

*comes in trousers*

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:15 (twenty-three years ago)

eww

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

depressed trousers

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

gosh Miss Rosen!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 05:39 (twenty-three years ago)

oneida. because they have a really sick collection of bizarre dance 12"s that proves their devotion to the get down imperative and because their best songs have a really strong groove (can you say "groove" without sounding like an asshole?) that cries out for electronic trickery.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:21 (twenty-three years ago)

yr probably right, Jess. Rancid, then.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 06:46 (twenty-three years ago)

A trance version of a Coldplay song *scrolls back to top* My mistake. For some reason I thought the question was "What's the worst idea anyone has ever had?"

That out of the way... er... do Royal Trux count as current? With their Radio Video EP I thought they should have actually taken the idea and ran with it and came up with some sort of heroin Fatboy Slim hybrid. It might have made sense at the time.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

basement jaxx, hahaha.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:17 (twenty-three years ago)

A trance version of a Coldplay song

Well, not exactly a trance version, but Clocks does have a pretty nice progressive Heaven & Earth Division remix. And apparently Marco V is spinning his techno one at the moment, but I haven't heard that one yet...

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 31 March 2003 07:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, Doves have a dance background, and I am certain they could be able to combine it quite well.

However, I would not at all be interested in hearing a dance single by any act if that dance single didn't follow traditional melodic song structures. What music needs now is somebody who is able to combine traditional Ivor Novello songsmithdom with a more modern sound.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 31 March 2003 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)

What music needs right now is....Joe Jackson circa 82?!!!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 08:27 (twenty-three years ago)

What music needs right now is....Stephin Merritt circa 94?!!!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 08:30 (twenty-three years ago)

why bother, James?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Fischerspooner

dave q, Monday, 31 March 2003 08:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Fischerspooner isn't a rock band. They are already dance, only more song-oriented than most dance.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 31 March 2003 08:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Daft Punk

jel -- (jel), Monday, 31 March 2003 08:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Daft Punk are not a rock band but they know how to rock

stevem (blueski), Monday, 31 March 2003 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

it's just occurred to me that what I want out of music is Stephin Merritt fronting the Strokes. no i'm not drunk

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 09:51 (twenty-three years ago)

'Stephin Merritt fronting the Strokes'

blurillaz

dave q, Monday, 31 March 2003 09:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Damon fucking WISHES

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm entirely honest when I say I think Ween could make an amazing dance single.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 31 March 2003 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

New Pornographers. Because I'm sure they'd be good at whatever genre they dive into and the vocals would kick ass! The lyrics, too.

Also Imperial Teen, they'd have the right attitude and they could be heading in that direction anyway. The Donnas, maybe they'd come up with something as good as "I Was Made for Lovin' You." And the Polyphonic Spree as a disco act might be interesting, though I haven't really heard enough of them to tell.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

super furry animals...

robin (robin), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

they remixed hayling by fc kahuna, I didn't hear it but it may have been dancey.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

The (International) Noise Conspiracy

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All these answers are tempting to one extent or another. (Well, except the Strokes one, ew.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

No one's actually said the Strokes, though. (Saying Imperial Teen comes close, but Imperial Teen is 3000x better of an idea.)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, then all is well. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

queens of the stone age with dave grohl on drums.
no one knows is pretty damn funky in a stoner kinda way.
plus the unkle remix was really cool and different i thought

Mr Monket (apn99), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:10 (twenty-three years ago)

ronan-i heard about that but haven't heard it yet,i was more referring to the fact that they've been threatening to put out an electronic album for ages now
the acid casuals (the keyboardist and his mates,i think) put out a techno track on novamute, appearently i've heard it loads of times but i don't know which track it is...
its meant to be fairly good, and did fairly well,i think (the likes of hawtin were playing it)
hopefully this will encourage them....

robin (robin), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

no one knows is pretty damn funk cuz no one knows rips off Hall & Oates

ditto on New Pornographers

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

The Dismemberment Plan remix album scheduled for later this year should be interesting.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

James Blount I love you forever for making the No One Knows/Hall And Oates connection.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

oh my god. Now when I hear that song I'm gonna visualize the video for Maneater. GE Smith in the shadows...oh MAN.....

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:12 (twenty-three years ago)

SFA's remix of FC Kahuna starts off as a fairly generous electro-chill thingy and ends up as a shouty guitar thing which has nothing whatsoever to do with the original. Not the best thing they've done, but funny.

The A-side of the Acid Casuals 12", Filthy Pitch, is also track 1 on the new Novamute comp. It's great - kinda like Force Inc stuff from about 10 years ago. I wouldn't really bracket them with 'rock bands who could make a dance record' cos they've always turned their hand to beats'n'tings with expertise and a couple of them were doing techno stuff before they were in SFA anyway.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Deerhoof.

It would be like Sesame Street + New Order + Merzbow.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:34 (twenty-three years ago)
