POX - Roxy Music

This one can be done, they have only eight albums and a small number of B-sides/additional tracks (on High Road for example). So, Bryan's solo stuff is not to be included (as great as it may be).

-Mother Of Pearl
-Casanova
-2HB
-Running Wild
-Oh Yeah
-My Only Love
-Take A Chance With Me

The reason nobody is answering this is that it is impossible. I have rewritten my list countless times. Instead I am going to write something about every Roxy Music song ever. Soon.

dave q, Monday, 31 March 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I love bits and pieces of this band so actually I AM gonna answer this one. Roxy was a singles band and they dressed HORRIBLY. Am I the only person who thinks glam clothes is ugly?

I love bits and pieces of this band

And you unashamedly love Limp Bizkit. Why do you insist on Mama Celeste's frozen pizza when you could be spending your time with imported prosciutto? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

oh plz ned

anyway, just look at the rolling stones pox thread and copy and paste my hilarious bit of foolishness to this thread

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

oh plz ned

I WILL HAVE MY SAY. Oh wait I did.

Like Dave Q, I recognize this being an impossible task, so I will not attempt it unless I go full hog.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I combine both the previous lists, add "Pyjamarama" on top and then add a bunch of other stuff including their videos so I get to look at their clothes too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, classic Roxy is better than classic bizkit (check my top 100 singles list). But if Roxy had less filler and proggy stuff in their career, I'd like 'em more. Siren and Greatest Hits top Chocolate Starfish easy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

siren?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:47 (twenty-three years ago)

woah. Jess prefers Chocolate Starfish to Siren? Crazy!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

haha siren

i agree with dave: this particular pox is an impossible task

geeta, Monday, 31 March 2003 22:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Roxy Music was an albums band and dressed fabulously.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 31 March 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

1. Avalon
2. Take a Chance With Me
3. Dance Away
4. Same Old Scene
5. Oh Yeah (On The Radio)
6. More Than This
7. The Space Between
8. Angel Eyes
9. Over You
10.Ladytron

A very 1979-82 dominated list this (and also a very singles dominated one, as they knew how to pick the best tracks for single release)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 09:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that the 'classic' "Angel Eyes" album versh or the 'crap' single versh?

dave q, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 09:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer the single version

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 09:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that single version available on any compliaton? I've always wanted it. It's all tarted up disco style.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

it's on 'Street Life' also on the box set

dave q, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I can only do this if I break the rule about Ferry solo records (purely a matter of semantics, in my book). Anyway,

1. “Just Another High”
2. “2HB” (Let’s Stick Together Version)
3. “Mother of Pearl”
4. “Amazona”
5. “Casanova” (Let’s Stick version)
6. “If There is Something” (Viva! version)
7. “Prairie Rose”
8. “Avalon”
9. “Manifesto” (12-inch version)
10. “Street Life”

siren?!

Siren, like Flesh + Blood = seriously underrated.

And list is impossible, but "End of the Line/Sentimental Fool" = same thing.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Not too familiar with Roxy Music, but thought it was a synth "limp-wristy" type band. Just yesterday in a store where I was buying Sigur Ros (a bit of a disappointment, but whatever), I asked the guy, "Who's this?"

His answer: "Roxy Music."

My further inquiry, "Wow, this sounds a lot different than the stuff my girlfriend plays. Did they change a lot?"

His further answer: "Not really."

I asked no more, but the stuff he had on in the store sounded like wonderful, watery stoner rock from the 70s, but not over-the-top with psyche feedbacky noise. I probably would really like RM if I knew what to buy.

Scaredy Cat, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Siren is probably their best album, not that I know what the hell I'm talking about.

Al Andalous, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The 1977 Greatest Hits album, the self-titled debut and Siren are easily their best full-lengths. All the Atlantic stuff (Manifesto, Flesh + Blood, Avalon) I only really like two or three songs off of each. It's a bit too massage parlor for my tastes.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

All the albums through Siren are amazing, pretty much song for song; I was never as intoStranded as the rest, but that's my problem (the hits are undeniably kick-ass, and it's definitely AO to the R).

One school says Siren is the beginning of the end, and I see where they're coming from--enter the masseuse--but it's still a great album, and viewed another way their best (most crystallized, least self-indulgent, the Ferry persona in sharpest focus, etc). Most days I'd probably be boring and vote for one of the first three, but even then Siren'd be right on its heels.

There's certainly a dropoff after; post-Siren is indeed about a bunch of singles--or being otherwise, uh, occupied and not really caring about the highly listenable filler in the 'space between' (sorry)--but there are a lot of good ones. Flesh + Blood is actually choked with 'hits,' and then there's "Angel Eyes," "Dance Away," "More Than This," "The Main Thing," "My Only Love," "Jealous Guy" ... then "Still Falls the Rain," "Ain't That So," "While My Heart is Still Beating" ...

Sigh. It is completely impossible. I'm just getting to the b-list. Even their lamest stuff is pretty good.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I am currently sitting here in front of the computer unable to do anything else aside from quite literally swooning with delight over the gorgeousness that is "Ladytron".

JUST ONE SONG. JUST ONE ROXY MUSIC SONG OUT OF THE HUGE PILE THEY RECORDED THROUGHOUT THEIR EXISTENCE.

Oh my God, and don't even get me started on Bryan Ferry. I would never be able to recover.

I'm very surprised that no-one else has picked 'Love is the Drug'. It's a near-perfect single. And there are few records in the world with a better start.

i agree with what dave and others have said: impossible.

but yeah, Siren is extraodinary (but then everything else is too, right through to "Same Old Scene" (Flesh + Blood, the last good record of their's for me).

i think "Love is the Drug" is un-characteristic and chart-oriented, so i'm unsuprised at its lack of inclusion. "Do the Strand" has always had me bored as a tune too. "Out of the Blue" + Siren (excluding that first track), is that X ?

stripey, Thursday, 25 September 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I have completely lost my mind over early Roxy Music. Watched this DVD today with a few German T.V. 'Musikladen' performances from 1973. I don't think I had really been living until I had the privilege of seeing Brian Eno in black pants with what looks like tinsel stripes going down at an angle on the side and those silly jackets made out of feather boa material that make him look like a bird! Ha ha ha! What a trip! And the music? Late at night it draws tears from my eyes it's so good. Most music really doesn't have that effect on me even if I love it a lot.

Bimble..., Tuesday, 21 December 2004 05:28 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the one where he's dressed in military clothes for "Virginia Plain", right? Netflix has that b/w T. Rex. I almost kept it for good.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

No, actually Ferry is dressed in military clothes for "All I Want Is You". This DVD has that, Virginia Plain & Do The Strand. I need to go back to the video shop though because there is a VHS cassette that has two or three more tracks from the same T.V. programme.

Bimble..., Tuesday, 21 December 2004 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a bit of a Roxy "phase" earlier this year. The Eno stuff especially, though the later stuff is nowhere near as bad as I was always led to believe.

"Ladytron"
"If There Is Something"
"2HB"
"Virginia Plain"
"Editions Of You"
"In Every Dream Home A Heartache"
"For Your Pleasure"
"Mother Of Pearl"
"Love Is The Drug"
"More Than This"

(I will buy the Dave Q Roxy song-by-song breakdown, if he ever writes it!)

haitch™ (haitch), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Take the '77 Greatest Hits LP that Anthony mentions, replace "A Song For Europe" with "Remake/Remodel", and woohoo! a perfect album.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

So I'm going out at lunch to buy a Rxoy Music album after digging out my Dad's Greatest Hits album.

Songs I like: These Foolish Things, Dance Away the Heartache, Virginia Plain, Angel Eyes. Well, I kinda think I could get into them but as I say, I'm pretty new to them despite the fact I was exposed to them a lot as a kid.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Quick! Please, I'm off in 5 minutes. Do I get a greatest hits or what?

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

no, get the first album

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

yeh? sure?

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

No, get the greatest hits. Because of those memories. Then get the first & second (For Your Pleasure). You'll end up loving them more than the greatest hits!

I am a world's forgotten boy, The one who searches and destroys (willem), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I got the best of Bryan and Roxy cos it was £5.99 and because the cover of the first album scared me too much. Plus Willem is kinda right - all the tracks I remember are on the best of so I will start dipping into their back catalogue once I've gotten used to it.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

has it ever been definitively stated whether the woman on the cover of the debut is actually a woman or not?

Nope, just Rove music.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 09:01 (twenty years ago)

Willem, funny that, I just dug out that mix album you sent me ages ago - and I realised I never sent you anything in return! I am so sorry - I will try to get on it and send you some of my mixes soon!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 09:02 (twenty years ago)

Hey no problem, though I always like receiving stuff :-) I'd really like to hear one of your mixes, I'll wait for a CD-R instead of downloading them. (now isn't that a subtle hint?)

willem -- (willem), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 10:19 (twenty years ago)
