YES THEY ARE.

, Monday, 31 March 2003 10:05 (twenty-three years ago)

nope

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

look lads enough of your fancy critic-speak, just spit out what's on your mind.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah they are, really, I reckon. It's sort of surprising how hard it is to actually like ROCK, a standard "70s Riff" and a screechy vocalist won't actually just=ROCK ACTION. Datsuns too. And the Donnas.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

THE HIVES ARE LAW, YOU ARE CRIME.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i like "hate to say i told you so" but the rest are dire. they're a fun live act, but there's very little to get your teeth into (and i love plenty of dumb rock n roll)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i think he meant the vines.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

got sick of 'hate to say...' after too much saturation - prefer 'Main Offender' and 'Die Alright' and you know, 'at least they're making an affort, maan'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

How badly did they miss the point w/that slogan, anyway? The Hives are cops, you are criminals! Or they're just too clever for me, not that hard to do

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Kilian that was really funny btw

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 31 March 2003 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

they suck shit

dave q, Monday, 31 March 2003 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Well they wrote three great songs and thats more than I can say about most current revivalists.

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 31 March 2003 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

(Yr initial post I mean, it was brilliant)

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 31 March 2003 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hives are crap,
You are sucker.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Monday, 31 March 2003 12:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha "sucker" = you poor fools, you have been tricked into actually enjoying something instead of sneering at it in frustration! How pitiable!

The album wasn't very good, or anything. Good for an afternoon, maybe. Though "Die Alright" and the Mayfield cover were great.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

there's nothing like middle-ground alterna-rock to still bring out the derisive in everyone

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Put 'em on a festival line-up with Matchbox 20 and Counting Crows and feel the yawn.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

DO YOU SEE?!?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

i think the singles collection is great, but they are hardly new to the scene. Gearhead Records in San Francisco started licensing their records from Burning Heart in 1997 in the USA. Great live band too. They remind me of Rocket From The Crypt before they started sucking (ca. 1993).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey you punk. Rocket most certainly do not suck. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

they were great live. the album's fun.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

they're pretty good but they've dug their own damn grave because rockcrit is so prog now that they won't be allowed to be considered cool if they keep making the same record over & over for the nxt 10 yrs even though all the critics who hosanna'ed them this go round will have the knives out if the next one sounds the same (even though they're all like "i love ac/dc and the ramones and johnny cash and chuck berry and jamc and the cramps, that's the real shit right there" when you get 3 beers in em but the past is given more leniency than the present. it was there first and all that hoopla.)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

what I mean is they're one-trick ponies like many a fine rock & roll band before them but that doesn't fly any more due to the sophistication of the audience*

*the sophistication of the audience = little kids don't buy rock n roll records anymore which = no more of the perfection that rock can only achieve through constant repetition (this can only truly be appreciated by someone newly discovering rock n roll, someone searching for the perfect song, eg a kid)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not saying "listen with the ears of an innocent" or anything that lame - just that it takes an army of virgin ears to give us the onehit wonders we deserve

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Rocket have always sucked; the Hives are excellent

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

[note: one of those statements was made solely to get a rise out of Ned ;-)]

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Rocket was great 1990-1992... pre-bloat.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

HONOR THE THREE BEERS!

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Everything I've heard by the Hives has sounded great, the only one I think I like out of that new breed. Nah, White Stripes rock too. All the rest are cheese. Are the Kills good?

autovac (autovac), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Matos and Gygax are on crack and I'll leave it at that. And Anthony to thread. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

(actually the white stripes have made more-or-less the same record 4 times now and the crits are digging it more n more every time.

but i bet if he doesn't get felix da housecat to remix the next one they'll have his head on a pike)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

the Kills are very good, yes

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

hell yeah they're crap.

maria b (maria b), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

They're great, I love 'em.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

SURE YOU DO.

, Monday, 31 March 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Hives.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the Hives.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 31 March 2003 21:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i fuckin' love em, they're swedes, and the singer is easy on the eyes. as for endless repetition, i dunno. they're older stuff was way faster/punker (?). which shows they might change.

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 00:55 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hives are basically the year 2000 version of the Fleshtones. Totally derivative and instantly irrelevent the second the album came out, but goofy fun for about a couple of months. Still like "Main Offender" and "Statecontrol" but have forgotten what the rest of the album sounded like - only it wasn't as good as those two songs.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I still love the Fleshtones too...

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

there's nothing like middle-ground alterna-rock to still bring out the derisive in everyone

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hives are fun in a cartoon-version-of-rrrock kinda way, and that's no backhanded diss, honestly.

But. The (International) Noise Conspiracy are everything The Hives could've been/ought to be and more.

Have The Hives really just signed a US$5m deal with a US major label? Bloody hope not.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 01:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Have The Hives really just signed a US$5m deal with a US major label?

the answer would depend on whether your use of the word "just" would include last summer.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

i luv 'em tew.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

The new Cramps album is pretty good. They hate everybody. They only luv leopard skin.

Scott Seward, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hives? While I'm exactly the biggest fan of their music, I love the fact that they're really really outspoken about their arrogance and they seriously think they're the best band in the world. Somehow I find it totally endearing. We need more of that.

Evan (Evan), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

the hives are not good enough to praise and not bad enough to bury. i find the vehemence of this thread utterly befuddling

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

they seriously think they're the best band in the world. Somehow I find it totally endearing. We need more of that
i think there are quite enough bands that think that as it is.
or were you not being serious?

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 07:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The Hives love us! and they let us know by saying "we are the hives and we love you!"
The Hippos never loved you like that....

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 08:17 (twenty-three years ago)

think there are quite enough bands that think that as it is.
or were you not being serious?

well I'm not all that aware of any...
