again, apologies if thie either covers old ground or is an innapropriate subject. for me, the two most criminally under-rated albums, and at times i am embarrased to admit to owning, let alone loving them are 'Spiders'by Space and 'Tease Me' by Chakka Demus and Pliars.
so what if tin planet and the ballad of tom jones were awful. spiders is to my mind one of the finest albums ever made. of their contemparies the only band that begins to come close to space in terms of unfulfilled potential is mansun. i'm aware that space had personal promblems, which cant have helped. all the singles off spiders were top quality andi honestley cannot think of a duff track on the whole album. its got it all-tunes, social commentry, humour and diversity. one day it will perhaps get the widespread recognition it deserves.
i'm embarassed to say that i love tease me. my reggae afficinado friends have ostrasised me for doing so, and i can see why. BUT it has several great elements. firstly, i believe sly and robbie do the percussion-there are tablas all over the shop, which give the whole album a gloriously other-worldly sound. the cover of she dont let nobody is better than curtis mayfield's original [surely high praise indeed]. the best touch on the album is the changing of the lyrics of one nation under a groove from 'for the funk of it' to 'for the dub of it'. pathetically, i get a kick out of this. the title track is a masterpiece. really.
this is far too long, but what the hell.....

Shed Seven used to be my fave band before I got to know Echo & the Bunnymen, Roxy Music, Joy Division and David Sylvian. The latter four are well appreciated, the Sheds were even hated back when they used to be my fave! I still love 'em, all of their albums. It doesn't really embarrass me to say so though.

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc900/c966/c966486kyk4.jpgConcrete by 999. B-list album from C-list band, and roundly derided by even their biggest fans. However, `twas one of the first credibly 'punk' records I ever latched onto in 1981. "So Greedy" is jerky, guitar blitz heaven and their tribute to Ennio Morricone-styled spaghetti westerns, "Obsessed" is magnifique.

The band that got me into punk rock, by dint of the fact they got played on the Evening Session quite a lot, were The Flying Medallions. Anyone remember them?
