I lent the first two Eddie Money albums to this kid in 7th grade. I never saw them again... but who knows how I would have turned out if I had had Eddie Money to listen to.

On the other hand. I borrowed Lou Reed's "Take No Prisoners" from someone in 9th grade and have had it ever since. I'd say I came out ahead overall.

Queen's Greatest Hits and The Simpsons Sing The Blues on cassette - first and last time I lent anything to someone whose address I didn't actually know. After this I only lent to friends, whose houses I could just walk into to retrieve borrowed items. Usually though, the only stuff they'd want to borrow were unwanted birthday CDs [MuchMusic Dance Mix '96] which I'd happily GIVE to them. Apart from this, a roommate stole some CDs (2 Unlimited, Beck, Odds, two more Queen, Blur selftitled) and the only one I've bothered replacing was the Blur (and that only last week). But what rankled about this was I'd just sold one of the Queen on eBay and had to go get another copy to send to the buyer. Luckily I found one used, so I still made a $2 profit.

I don't think this has happened to me. I, however, have kept other people's records that I have borrowed, because I'm a forgetful piece of shit. A good friend of mine loaned me Killing Joke's 'Democracy' and 'Pandemonium'. I've had them going on 10 years now and he's not getting them back.

Also, I let an ex-girlfriend borrow 'Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' Greatest Hits', and I haven't got it back since we stopped dating. But that was my brother's, so it doesn't really count for the purposes of this thread.

I lent Modest Mouse's "Lonesome Crowded West" to the co-host of my radio show back in school. Her boyfriend at then time, a recovering heroin addict, had a relapse and ended up cleaning out her apartment one weekend while she was away. He stole pretty much everything, pawning it for drug money. I told her not to worry about replacing the CD. Oh, and they broke up.

Mark, I think he went to jail for a spell. Then, my co-host graduated, and I never really found out about her ex-boyfriend. My replacement copy of "Lonesome Crowded West" was stolen a few months later. I was in Toronto to see Modest Mouse and my car was broken into.

My copy of Definitely Maybe disappeared somewhere in 1997. Never really looked for it. My copies of Hunky Dory and some Manics album or other got lent to my sister and are now forever lost in The Boxes You Put Things In When You Move House; the problem being Which One.

Not seen Dare by the Human League, Closer by Joy Division or a Mission of Burma live album for a while but I'm 40-50% optimistic I may again someday.

all my friends know the risks involved in borrowing cds from me. after a month of not having it i start to get real cranky. in hindsight i have, in the past, come down on some people incredibly hard - but that's why certain friends are dysallowed from borrowing records now.

Some dimwitted jock I lived with my freshman year of college left at the end of the year with my copy of Tricky's Maxinquaye. He ended up dropping out of school; I never saw him again.

A guy I haven't seen in three years supposedly still has my Blonde Redhead, Mia Vita Violenta. He also owes me $30 for Dirty Three tickets for him and his girlfriend, from March 2000.

I haven't replaced either CD. I miss the Blonde Redhead more than the Tricky, but only because I have all their other CDs and I'm constantly reminded of the missing one.
