Best Rolling Stones Compilation?

My father's birthday is coming up, and I wanted to offer him a early Rolling Stones compilation, since the only Stones album we have at home is a latter days Virgin comp. (Jump Back). So, I'm really undecided, balancing between The Singles Collection 3-CD set, or the two Hot Rocks volumes. What do you advise?

I'd go for the Singles Collection - it's pretty damn comprehensive.

If you're in the UK you can often get it cheap. I've seen it for as little as £11 in HMV sales.

Yeah, get the singles box. The two "Hot Rocks" sets are too scattershot for the money. The singles box is an especially good value since you don't have any of the proper albums. (I say this because disc three has major overlap w/"Beggars Banquet" and "Let It Bleed" The album versions are better.)

Funny, I thought that the Hot Rocks sets would be the right choice, because they collect tracks both from singles and albums... The idea was really to buy a set of tracks that could replace the need for the albums (a bit of an utopia, I know), something like the Beatles red and blue sets...

The new Metamorphosis CD is good, sounds great, not too many of the singles on it though. I dig it.

Ottherwise , yeah, go for the singles.

Another vote for the Singles Box

I'd vote for the two Hot Rocks sets.

go for the 2 hot rocks, as they don't
have heaps of crummy b sides on. the singles
is literally a's and b's - go for
the rocks instead!!

the best compilation would be 'rolled gold'
but it never came out on cd.

I would say "40 Licks" is the best overall compilation (their later career wasn't that bad).

However, if you - like me - are interested in as many stereo versions as possible of songs where stereo mixes do exist, then "Hot Rock" is the superior choice, accompanied by some compilation of their 70s onwards material in addition.

My favorite is Rewind.

If you have to buy just one and the extra cash isn't an issue, I'd go with The London Singles collection.

There are some good songs hidden among those b-sides like "Memo from Turner" and "I Don't Know Why", that I think are not available any other place. "Memo from Turner" is particularly evil, with some great nasty slide guitar from Ry Cooder. Many of the other b-sides are some good tracks off of some of their mid-60s records.

Add in The Stones albums Beggars Banquet to Exile and you have pretty much the cream of their musical output.

I've been listening to the Stones quite a bit lately for the first time in a few years.

The two records I have been getting into the most are "Goats Head Soup" and "It's Only Rock and Roll". I have come to the conclusion that they may be better than some have given them credit, as any records in the wake of Exile on Main St. are going to be a let down. The song "Fingerprint File" has to be one of the most coked out, paranoid funk songs ever recorded this side of Sly Stone.

Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)

I think the most underrated recent Rolling Stones album is "Steel Wheels", which is actually a rather consistently good rock album.

JBR in agreeing with Geir Hongro shockah!

Hmmm. Anyway.. Unless your dad is a stereo freak, go for "The Singles Collection".

Sucking in the Seventies. By far the best overview of their work.

Steel Wheels is a great album! "Sad Sad Sad" was the best rocker they'd written since Tattoo You, and I put "Slippin' Away" on my POX because Keith plays it so much I just have really come to enjoy the song and identify it with him.
