Okay, I sorta know a bit about him, but I just got word that he's calling me in 4 hours and I have precious little time to actually prep for (because y'know, I didn't EVEN know until ten minutes ago and I have a dozen other things I need to get done by then), so I'm counting on you lovely folks to do my job for me.
Tell me what I need to know/ask/talk to him about.
Please?

Jesse Fox, I'm counting on you!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i've got the impression that he's not a hugely talkative guy. There's a good long article on him by Nick Tosches, if you can find it.

a couple of perhaps useful articles might be:
http://weeklywire.com/ww/10-25-99/austin_music_feature.html
http://www.nodepression.net/archive/nd23/features/jones.html

you might ask him about the story behind "yabba dabba do (the king is gone and so are you)"...my favourite George Jones song.

I saw a recent quote from him: "They still call it country music and that makes me madder than anything. Because to me they are using country music as a stepping stone. Shania Twain, and people like that, they don't care any more about country music than Joe Blow from Kokomo. All my friends and colleagues, a lot of them who have passed away, they are turnin' over in their graves 50 times a day."

thank you a million times.
I've read the Tosches pieces (it's in the Reader), but not recently, and because of the short notice, don't have time to dig it out (nor do I have my glorious bookshelves with me at work).
you rock, pauls00, and so does that quote.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

let us know how it goes, eh?

pauls00, Monday, 31 March 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah, I sure will. I don't think I've ever been more nervous about an interview. I mean of all people to have to do on short notice, why somebody with sooo much history. Damn damn damn.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

he was supposed to call three minutes ago.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

don't ask him about his nickname "no show" harhar

pauls00, Monday, 31 March 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I probably wouldn't ask him about his lawn mower, although that is a pretty good story.

earlnash, Monday, 31 March 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Ask him about the war and the Dixie Chicks.

Lee G (Lee G), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

19 minutes late and counting...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

don't ask about yaba daba doo - it's 10 yrs old and he didn't write it

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

merle haggard once said "if we (country singers) could sing like we wanted to sound, we'd all sound like george jones"

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

65 minutes late and counting...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

You do know about his nickname, right?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, you're talking to George Jones?

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I am sitting beside my phone waiting for THE George Jones to call. Meanwhile he is sitting in his tourbus, giggling like a school girl over tormenting poor ol' H. Mann on a Monday when he's already knackered up from an ill-spent weekend.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

116 minutes and counting...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the reputation preceded him.

Lee G (Lee G), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:57 (twenty-three years ago)

By several hours apparently.

Amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 31 March 2003 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I am sad and slightly shocked to report that I closed the door on George Jones. I mean, HOW LONG was I SUPPOSED to wait??? Legend or no, time marches on.
Fuck do I feel awful about it though, it's not like I'll get that chance again.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Have a drink (or five) -- you'll feel better (and more like George).

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 14:13 (twenty-three years ago)

so...did you at least get to go to the show? Did he make it to stage, at least?
