One in a Million (oh, stop, it's really just the lyrics from X's "Los Angeles" grafted onto the music from Dylan's "Hurricane")

Coma (man, am I glad Axl was able to squeeze this one out before he COMPLETELY went off the deep end)

Don't Cry (demo version) (desperate, strung-out, beautiful)

Rocket Queen (the coda sounds like the Pretenders)

Sentimental Movie (unreleased '80s demo -- ballady Thunders-punk w/ Slash on vox)

Estranged (that one piercing Slash note... you know the one)

Think About You (my honest-to-god favorite filler song ever)

Out Ta Get Me ("I'm fuckin' innocent!" -Dignan, Bottle Rocket)

Civil War ("WE PRACTICE SELECTIVE ANNIHILATION OF MAYORS AND
GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FOR EXAMPLE TO CREATE A VACUUM
THEN WE FILL THAT VACUUM AS POPULAR WAR ADVANCES
PEACE IS CLOSER")

Back Off Bitch (even though he sounds like Beavis on the final, song-closing "bitch," tittering with delight at the WRONGNESS [yawn] of it all)

8. You Could Be Mine

Dammit, this would be my #11.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

1. welcome to the jungle (in a more perfect world, all rock would sound like this)
2. patience (slash's snake made me uncomfortable as an early adolescent)
3. civil war (i can always tell how much i'm going to get on with a person by their reaction to this song)
4. you could be mine (a song so powerful it even made eddie furlong cool for 30 secs.)
5. it's so easy (see number one, but less so)
6. don't cry (despite the fact that it quite literally predicted blind melon, also great video)
7. one in a million (jbr is right xcept this is better than x ever was)
8. sweet child o'mine (i saw a girl karaoke this one night in a bar - slowed down about 2 steps throughout and nasty as hell - at one of my lowest ebbs ever; i never ever saw her again but i knew i'd love her forever)
9. november rain (well, duh)
10. get in the ring ("hey axl! will you be the godfather of our baby?!" little fucking pipsqueak is lucky a. rose didn't do his job for him two years early right then.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

7. one in a million (jbr is right xcept this is better than x ever was)

GNR were like X with Axl doing the male AND female voice at the same time.

Actually it also occurred to me that "Think About You" is a total X song.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

i was also just reminded how universally great gnr's videos were...esp "dont cry".

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

jody: 10. get in the ring ("hey axl! will you be the godfather of our baby?!" little fucking pipsqueak is lucky a. rose didn't do his job for him two years early right then.)

jody: HAHAHA

jess: hahahah god i always HATE when that pops up in something about nirvana

jody: i know, me too

jody: hahaha kurt and courtney insulted axl and he got upset. hahahaha

jess: it's just so fucking smug. it's everything that was wrong with alt-rock in one soundbite.

jody: i thought that at the time and i still think that

jess: heh it was the moment that rock gave up the "Rock" part of it. i mean, the video for "dont cry" is the perfect explanation of why axl was cooler than kurt. it's just totally fucked, egocentric, over the top etc etc etc

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

we then went on to state that kurt was pretty fucked up and egocentric too, but in the lame manic depressive way which we already understand all too well.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Estranged is one of my favourite videos, coz Slash rises from the ocean playing a guitar solo. I want to be Slash.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

who doesn't! i mean, he's not all that much to look at, but he's also SLASH.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

but no one knows what Slash looks like! What lies beneath the top hat, shades and hair? Slipknot stole his act.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

uh oh, this thread is devolving into actual discussion! more lists please!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone else notice that "Rocket Queen" and "I Am the Resurrection" are the same song, except with the pieces in reverse order?

dave q, Monday, 31 March 2003 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

(not that "I Am the Resurrection" is ANYWHERE near as good tho)

dave q, Monday, 31 March 2003 18:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Breakdown is good apart form the "breakdown, let me hear you now" bits, which are good in an embarassing way.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

haha and the monologue at the end!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 31 March 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

About this video theory. All videos from Appetite for Destruction -- utterly great. "Patience" -- enjoyably ridiculous. After that: PLEASE. Only "November Rain" works, and it only works on fast forward.

"Get in the Ring," meanwhile, is dumbass. Even Eminem does things like that better, and I can't stand him at all!

I couldn't find 10 songs of theirs I really like. But I've never heard the Spaghetti Incident.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 31 March 2003 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't make lists, but what a great band! None of the cool kids I hung with back when they were actually making records thought they were any good, except my heavy-metal boyfriend, who was dumb as a stump. Yes, I had an honest-to-god heavy metal boyfriend with long hair, tight jeans, etc. Heh, anyway I'm kind of glad Axl lost his mind cuz we didn't have to put up with the lousy records he would have made with session musicians. Please note that I don't in any way glamorize losing your mind. Ha!
