Who is better?

Fridge Magnet, Monday, 31 March 2003 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Deadly Snakes better. I like both bands, but Tangiers don't do "Pirate Cowboy" which is the best Garage Rock song of the current era.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 31 March 2003 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

deadly snakes, yes. artificially induced toronto band fite!

pauls00, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

they're both very good

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ship Ahoy, Ride "Em Cowboy!" that kills me every time.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 13:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i guess my point is that this may be of limited interest to people outside of toronto, at least for now. However, yes, they are both very good bands. Seen 'em each all of once, but will go back for more of both. Deadly Snakes sounded to me like some bluesy gospel punk band, with horns & maracas. Maybe a bit of a early 70s rolling stones sound, but more fun. Not as good as the Raunch Hands, but give 'em time. Tangiers had more of a heartbreakers thing going on, as far as i could tell. They sounded like they were just getting started, and could become either real good, or not so good, depending.

pauls00, Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Tangiers rules. I got the demo in January and am sorting out a pr company for Oliver. (Do you know Oliver from Sonic Unyon, Fritz). He rules over fools!

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I know Sean from Sonic Unyon.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Oliver is waaay cooler.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Oliver signed Tangiers from a demo. He played it for me and asked me what I thought. Fucking amazing (before I go into my description) must ask - what do you good people think?

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had the album for about a month, Hot New Spirits, that is. I really dug it at first. "Return to the Ship" "Here Come the Pieces" "Ca Va Cool" this is what the Strokes left me wanting.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Exactly. Tis the spirit of '77 done correctly. I was blown away when Oliver played it for me. But was like 'oh whatever' but secretly thinking 'fucking hell - it's better than the Strokes (and I like the Strokes). A bit Talking Heads as well...psychokiller....and those crazy, kerrazy, basslines.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got the demo around the house - I could put it up online for you, like, uh, tomorrow. What's yer soulseek cb handle?

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a half-assed luddite. Ain't got no sound on my shitty $50 laptop.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Email me yer address. I'll do ya a copy. Can't promise when I will send it, though.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard through the grapevine that the Deadly Snakes will be doing a surprise show tonight in Toronto at Lee's Palace opening for D4.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Are Deadly Snakes the band that smashes stuff and gets banned from places, Fritz?

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

that was killer elite, they broke up.

snakes, tangiers and killer elite all shared members

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

like a gay softball team

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

D4, huh? Guess Alan McGee's hitting Toronto soon.

That's right about Killer Elite. They, uh, rocked.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Tangiers have a shot, though, fuck they are so much better than Hot Hot Heat. Tangiers are iconic.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I just put on the Tangiers demos. All unnamed but really fucking good.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Just got the Tangiers CD for review - I must admit at first listen it's not striking me but seeing as a lot of you are friends with them or whatever, maybe you can give me some insight - what's so good - or rather, unique - about this band? I always listen to stuff I have to review at least twice (usually three times) so maybe I'm not getting it. At it's best it reminds me of The Figgs, at it's worst it sounds like Hot Hot Heat or some other awful band. Perspective?

three weeks pass...
Does anyone know where to get Tour Dates for The Deadly Snakes?
What label are they on?

Gidget, Monday, 28 April 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

They are on In The Red.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
Revive, because yesterday I got the new solo album by André Ethier (of the Deadly Snakes) in the mail.
It is really good. Similar to 70s rough&tumble singer-songwriter stuff, Randy Newman, Desire Dylan, etc. After one listen, I recommend.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Friday, 27 February 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

what's that record like? does it sound like the snakes at all?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

it sounds sorta like Ethier's slower stuff on teh snakes. I played "Sweep Up After Me" on my radio show last night and it was awesome. Lots of similar themes (death, badness, etc), but it's more singer/songwriter sounding than the Snakes even a little barrelhouse cabaret at moments.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Revive, because the last two Tangiers albums have rarely been discussed on ILM, and contain some of the best rock songs of the new decade. In particular, "Ro Ro Roland", "Walk Run Walk", "I Wanna Go Out" and "We're So Breathless" off Never Bring You Pleasure are thrilling, catchy, gritty pop-garage songs full of little hooks and great moments.

The Family Myth is a weird little record, all reverb, pianos, acoustic guitars and 80's melancholia. It's got some fantastic songs though, especially the title track, "A Hundred Million Feathers' Weight" (one of the best song titles of late), "Your Pristine Hands" and "Dragging the Harbor".

It's also worth noting that both albums nail their last forty-five or so seconds - hitting just the right sequence and hammering it for optimal effect, and then it's over.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else shared my admiration for these two albums.

PS The Deadly Snakes are pretty good too, but "Porcella" is a hella mixed bag!

Simon H. (Simon H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Never Bring You Pleasure has a lot of really good songs, esp. "I Wanna Go Out" v. good dancing music.
I really haven't gotten into The Family Myth at all. I've listened maybe twice and had no impulse to listen again. I will force myself to tonight.
